My First Time.. a Liverpool fan story

So anyone who’s been following this site and me personally for any amount of time would know that I am an absolutely massive Liverpool Football Club fan. I’ve been a fan since the very first time I watched Ian Rush and John Barnes knock the ball around way back in the 80’s.

I used to be a club player, was never really any good, but every day I was outside on the grass kicking the ball around and dreaming of walking onto the hallowed turf of Anfield decked out in that glorious red. So apparently Absa caught wind of my obsession and they have approached me to tell you about my very first British Premier League experience because they are running a promotion where they are going to give away 19 experiences to 19 of their lucky clients.

And even if you aren’t an ABSA client or aren’t able to move right now they have been kind enough to give me an awesome prize for one of you lucky readers… more on that later.

My First (and only) live Liverpool Experience

I lived in the UK for 2 years between 2001 and 2003 but unfortunately I was based in London and not my beloved Liverpool and getting tickets to watch Liverpool in London was completely out of my financial reach at the time. So the one week in December 2001 I took a trip up to Atherton, which is where my family originates from, to visit my grandparents and family members.

Now Atherton is a tiny town in Greater Manchester which is 17 miles from the Manchester city centre and 22 miles from Liverpool city centre, so as you can expect the town has a lot of supporters for both Liverpool and Manchester United, as well as the closest former Premier league team, Bolton Wanderers.

While I was there my sister and I decided we wanted to go check out Liverpool and I insisted that we would go see my beloved Anfield. It was a Monday, 12 December 2001, and it was bitterly cold in Liverpool but we made our way to the stadium to check it out and lo and behold there was a game on that night against Fulham.

I seem to recall it was a rescheduled game, not entirely sure on that though, but since it was a Monday night and against less-than-glamorous opposition there were still tickets available. The decision took about 2 seconds to make and I spent the last of my available funds on getting 2 tickets in the nosebleed section to watch my heroes take on Fulham.

Standing in the crowd of my people and singing the songs for my heroes was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. To watch Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Patrik Berger and Jamie Carragher blitz around the field was something else. Michael Owen is quick on TV but to see him move in real life was truly amazing and watching little Stevie G manhandle the other side and hear the passion from the supporters and players is something you truly have to experience at least once in your life.

Unfortunately the game wasn’t a great one with no goals scored by either side but I will never regret making the decision to sit in the freezing cold and cheer my team on.

Man I want to go back now…

The Competition

So as a reward for reading my story Absa has generously donated this epic looking Liverpool bag to give away.

Three easy ways to enter. First leave a comment below letting us know about your first Premier League experience, be it on TV or in real life. For a second chance to enter just smash this tweet button below and say whatever you want, just don’t remove the hashtags and @absa part.

And thirdly, like this post on Facebook… that’s it.

Oh and if you’re wondering what it’s like to truly experience your first BPL game in video format, check out this very cool video of Elton Norkie attending his very first Everton *booooooo* football game. It does a great job of bringing through that emotion of winning.. which rarely happens for Everton so this is nice I guess.

When I was young the big game was always Liverpool vs Everton, which led to family divisions. I used to support the former, because I liked red more than blue, & because I was too young to know better.

As a Man Utd supporter from a young age, I totally get that…
But, I wouldn’t go as far to say that I hate any other team, but I do have a little chuckle when I see one of the other top team drop points. But at the end of the day, I will always support the result the benefits my United. IE, if Liverpool beating Gunners help us, then that is what I want.
I also just enjoy watching good footie.

Yes, I watched the game live, if memory serves. The commentators went on and on about it. But they still grow the players, just not from true youngsters <18.

I am not English. I do get that it is important to have locals in the teams, but I watch for the best league in the world.

In true gamer fashion I got into football by playing Fifa 09 and selected Liverpool because of Robbie Carlyle’s infatuation with them in the 51st State. From then on I was hooked and became obsessed with Fernando Torres (before he became an expensive paperweight) and the rest is history.

I tried to get a ticket when I was travelling the UK in 2013 but the ticket I bought was fake and it is a regret that shames me to this day. I did however have a small reprieve when I got my Liverpool flag signed by Robbie Fowler ahead of the LFC legends vs Khaiser Chiefs Legends match in Durban later that year.

I never got to see Stevie play IRL and now he is gone and that is saddening. But still, YNWA.

My first (not Premier league, but British) Football experience was watching Liverpool beat Everton in the 1985 FA Cup. My school friend was supporting Everton as Man Utd didn’t make it to the final and so I decided to support Liverpool, purely to irritate him. Liverpool went on and won the game 3-1 it was the first time I saw them take home a trophy – although, as we know, it has been a while since more have been won, but that changes nothing, I’m an LFC Fan through and through and that will never change.

I’ve married into a Man Utd family (my father in law’s ashes were scattered at old Trafford) and even that won’t change me. Taking cracks on the chin about who I support is just another reason to back them even more.

It seems that perhaps my favourite part of being a football fan is the rivalry that comes from supporting our teams, the passion on field and the banter off.

I’ve yet to experience the thrill of a live game, but I know it will happen someday – I just wish it would be sooner rather than later (hint, hint) but for now I’ll settle for the televised games.

I am also a massive liverpool supporter and it has very much to so with my first recolection of a football game.

It wasnt a typical weekday for our family. Out of nowhere and while struggling a bit financially, my parents suprised us with a trip to the local panarottis. As I sat at the table enjoying my cheese, salami and ham pizza a certain rather important footbal game was on display on the T.V’s. At the time rugby was all I new, and indeed all i loved, yet what unfolded before me changed my opinion forever. A certain team in red was down by 3 at half time, but soon after Mr liverpool, Gerrard put in a header(“hello, Hello. Here we go!”), Smicer followed and then Xabi from a saved penalty. We sat in that restaurant till the bitter end and watched something truely amazing.

Been a massive Liverpool fan since I was 5 (so I guess that’s 1986). Barnes, Beardsley, Rush, and co. Can’t remember a particular game that kicked off my devotion to the club but I do remember Bruce Grobbelaar came to our soccer club and I got his autograph. Best. Day. Ever (when you’re 5-7 years old, can’t remember exactly)

I have been to Anfield (sadly not to see a game) but I’ve walked down the tunnel and touched the sign and stood out on the pitch. Magical.

Stevie’s final game at Anfield was heartbreaking. Such a poor performance from the team. He deserved so much better.

My first ever EPL game I saw as a kid happened one lazy Sunday when I was too young to really take note of the year. I had just watched Michael Schumacher destroy a F1 race that morning and I was a staunch supporter of the German even at the earliest of ages. So heading into the 1pm kick-off (and with the Marlboro Ferrari victory firmly in my head) I sat down with my father (Liverpool supporter, second generation) and my grandfather (Man Utd supporter, second generation) to watch Liverpool v Man Utd. Now it shouldn’t surprise you that I supported the next team clad in all red (Liverpool were at home – if this was Man Utd at home I would be supporting a different team now perhaps). Liverpool took the match (I can’t remember the score, being a small child caught between rival patriarchs) and that was all I needed to continue supporting Liverpool to this day. Oh and as a side note, I still very much am a Ferrari man.

    This.

I grew up very Afrikaans, we didn’t watch any football in our house. I studied in Pretoria at the time when Owen and Beckham was at their prime. I hated Beckham, he felt more like a model rather than a true sportsmen(only found out later he was pretty good at both) so I started playing Fifa and chose Liverpool as my team thanks to Owen. I had a Portuguese friend who also liked Liverpool and another friend who supported Man U (we are still friends, I know very weird!). We started looking for pubs that would have the Super Rugby on a TV and have the EPL on another. We all had our club shirts(Mine was stolen out of my flat when I started to work), then we started looking for pub which only had the football on. By then we were watching the Champions League on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and the EPL on Saturdays and Sundays (this was very rough on a student salary).
I am a true Liverpool fan, and I will see them once in my lifetime even if I have to sell a kidney to do it 🙂

I got to watch Man Utd vs Arsenal at Ellis park, Bryan Robson was sent off by an Overzealous South African based ref. watched it from one of the boxes with my dad, it was epic..although im a Liverpool fan, it was a great memory of 2 premier league legends. Arsenal won 2 nil..and this will sound like product placement, but it was the United Bank international Cup, which eventually became ABSA. Fantastic memory! Big Game in a packed Ellis park, the FA Cup champs vs United.
