The Unworthy and Mighty Thors unite to face The Asgard/Shi’Ar” War

Thor (1)

Thor just can’t catch a break these days. Whether it be Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir or the former master of that hammer brought down by a single whisper and declared worthy, either Thor is having a rough time as of late. And things are only going to get worse before they get better. Right now, the Mighty Thor is finding herself trapped in a civil war of her own across the realms as Dark Elf King Malekith has united rival factions to topple Asgard and its allies once and for all with his Dark Council.

That war is only going to escalate into an intergalactic confrontation when the Shi’Ar come knocking in The Asgard/Shi’Ar War. Meanwhile, the first Odinson is going to embark on a quest to prove himself worthy once again, not for his former Mjolnir hammer but for one of the few remnants of the Ultimate Universe that belonged to that Thor and has made its way to Earth now that the Secret Wars are over. A quest that will unite both Thors as they face the Shi’Ar.

“He’s been off on his own since “Secret Wars,” so there’s a lot that he’s missed and doesn’t know about, including what’s happened in Asgard and what’s happened with Loki and Freyja.” writer Jason Aaron said about the Odinson who has been rarely seen as of late to CBR.

Initially, he’s off dealing with his own problems while Jane Foster is dealing with all the chaos going on in the various realms. As you can imagine though, once the Odinson gets everything sorted out on his end he’s going to be very involved in everything that’s going on back on Midgard and in the other realms.

Thor (1)

You’d expect the Odinson to be a different person after the events of Original Sin, losing an arm to Malekith and finding himself imprisoned by the Collector. You’d also be very right, as original flavour Thor won’t be his usual happy-go-lucky self when he returns to the Marvel Universe main event, but there’s still an inkling of the old god inside of him. “He’s very haunted by being unworthy, and very driven to reclaim his mantle,”.

He’s a darker and angrier version of the character than we’ve seen in the past.

I feel like most of the stuff I’ve done with the character has been a blend of fantasy and sci-fi. This is definitely a cosmic and a space story, but it’s still pretty much the same guy from “Thor: God of Thunder,” which I think was very much a fantasy driven book. Heavy Metal”-esque was kind of what we were going for.

This is definitely in that vein, and it’s drawn by the amazing Olivier Coipel. It’s the first time he’s drawn Thor in a while. I’m just trying to give him as much cool, crazy stuff to draw as I can think of.

So how does the Odinson find himself back on the hunt for a hammer to wield? Like all things in life, it starts with parachute pants. Wait, that’s MC Hammer. I mean it everything comes full circle, as Thor returns to the moment when he became unworthy. Although parachute genie pants would also be cool. “It starts with him back on the moon again, where he lost his hammer in the encounter with the Unseen, which is what Nick Fury became at the end of Original Sin,” Aaron explained.

Thor (3)

This is the first time the Odinson has found himself face to face with the man who was once Nick Fury since Fury whispered in his ear. That encounter sends the Odinson off in a new direction, and that’s how he finds out that there’s another hammer out there; the hammer of Ultimate Thor that we saw fall into the Marvel Universe at the end of “Thors” [Aaron’s “Secret Wars” series].

Someone has found out that it’s here. So that sends the Odinson off to track it down.

That quest won’t exactly be a walk in the park however, as Aaron teased foes both new and old for the Odinson to tackle. “Right out of the gate we’ll see Odinson butting heads with Ulik and a bunch of trolls, and one of the main villains of the arc is the Collector; a being who most people know from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” film and who wants to get his hands on anything that’s rare and powerful in the Marvel Universe,” Aaron said.

A hammer of Thor certainly qualifies. He’s just one of a number of cosmic entities that we’ll see in this arc that are desperate to get their hands on that hammer.

But is the Odinson worthy? After all the trials and danger that he has faced, is he worthy enough to lift the hammer of a Thor from another universe who may have been even greater than him before he died? “Yes, that’s the big question,” Aaron said.

Thor (2)

This is very much a quest for that hammer, but he has no idea if he’ll be able to pick it up. He wasn’t able to pick up his own hammer, but this is the hammer of a dead Thor from a dead universe. I think there are a lot of questions about the nature of that hammer, and there are still some questions about the Odinson’s worthiness.

Hammer or not, it’s about time that the Odinson got back into action. There’s plenty of room for more than one Thor in the Marvel Universe. That, and I want to see both Thors say “it’s hammer time” in a single comic book panel, which would be the second-greatest image ever printed in one of those books. Right behind Captain America kicking the Hulk in the nads.

He lost his arm? Was the old one Thor from all the fighting?

    So, I’m a bit confused.

This is Thor from the Marvel universe prior to Secret Wars, yeah? So, a few questions:

How did he “survive” the rewrite of reality after both Secret Wars and Battleworld – when, as far as I’m aware, only Jane was present during the events of Battleworld? Last I saw of him he was with Doom and Strange, facing off against the Beyonders.

Which leads to my next question – during Secret Wars, after he had become Unworthy due to the Original Sin story arc, he was wielding a hammer from an alternate Marvel dimension which could only be wielded by those Unworthy. In the climactic fight against the Beyonders, where he chooses to fight to his death, he finds he can no longer lift the hammer, as he is now worthy (a scene I thought particularly fantastic, being someone who poo-poos comics often :P). How has he now become unworthy again?

Ah, he actually was present in Secret Wars, in Thors specifically with many other Thors. So both 616 Thors were present.

      As for question 2….Shit, I can’t remember, but there is a reason…somewhere.

Woah, Odinson was on Battleworld? That was COMPLETELY sidestepped by the main Battleword series (or at least touched on in a very minor fashion), I’m surprised. Had he been there since Battleworld’s creation? What was he doing, how did he interact with Jane, and am I asking too many questions?
