Telltale Games are really busy. They’re still in the process of finishing up ‘Tales from the Borderlands’ and ‘Game of Thrones’, both of which are only halfway through their seasons. They’re also working on a mysterious Minecraft: Story Mode, which has seen nothing more than an announcement. Their schedule just filled up even more however, because they’ve now joined forces with Marvel.
Telltale made the (brief) announcement on their blog yesterday (via Game Informer):
Announced this evening in San Francisco, we’re excited to reveal an all-new partnership with the incredible team at Marvel Entertainment. We’ll be teaming up on the development of an upcoming Telltale game series project set to premiere in 2017!
This is nothing short of exciting for fans of Marvel, and Telltale for that matter. The former have a plethora of material to work from, and the latter have proven that they’re rather good at turning comic books into amazing games (I’m looking at you, The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us).
The question is, what exactly will they be working on? Sure, there are tons of awesome comics to work with, but I have a feeling that we might see a game relating to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It would make sense, seeing as there is a steady stream of mainstream, Marvel movies releasing till 2017 and beyond. Avengers: Age of Ultron just launched, and we can expect to see more of Cap in 2016 with Captain America: Civil War, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Thor: Ragnarok will land the following year. I don’t see why they wouldn’t make a game that fleshes out whatever happens between these movies.
As excited as I am, I can’t help feeling that Telltale are taking on a little too much at the moment. They are still knee-deep in their existing work, and to be honest, I wonder if they aren’t setting themselves up to fail. As much as I love their adventure games, at what point does it become too much – the same game reskinned for a different franchise? This is of course, assuming that whatever they are working on is in fact an adventure title. It’s hard to tell though, because all we have to go on is the bland, boring red image above.
Regardless, I would be lying if I said this collaboration didn’t make me happy. How do you feel? Are you excited for these two to work together?

They really do have a lot on their plates don’t they? They have proven to be bloody good at what they do, so I will not criticise them. Still too busy with the walking dead…

Could be interesting. Depends on what story they tell.

Exactly! Like a fist fighting Hulk story won’t work, whereas a investigative Captain America story could work… Anyway….We’ll have to see what they come up with…

Everyone whined when they announced Borderlands, most people that have played it seem to enjoy it.

Thats’ the thing about Telltale, you get to love the story, simply because it is so well executed, the BL take on it is brilliant, but I am waiting for a Steam special on that…
