Civil War 2 (4)

Is the sequel to Marvel’s first Civil War any good? And what’s so Civil about War anyway? That remains to be seen, as the series is starting to heat up with Tony Stark locking horns with Captain Marvel over the idea of fate being used to dish out some pre-judicial justice. One thing that everyone can agree on however? Civil War II looks superb.

That’s thanks to the art of David Marquez, backed up by Justin Ponsor on colours. Marquez’s art has been truly magnificent so far and the main selling point of a storyline where heroes are divided on changing the future or fighting for it. Slick, clean and sharp stuff, Marquez has been able to deliver epic widescreen battles and more intimate moments in the issues released so far.

And get ready for more of his art, as Civil War II is being extended into an eight-issue mini-series. Brian Michael Bendis dropped the news on his Tumblr, revealing that the extension will help give Marquez some breathing room as he juggles art duties with being a dad:

Well, if you peak over at @davidmarquez Facebook you’ll discover that he and his amazing wife Tara just had a kick ass baby boy. A very cute baby too.  and not all babies are cute at the start 🙂

Not a delay hell, or a conspiracy, just a new baby in the middle of the hardest issue to draw.  The ending of four shows that five is a monster. David has been handing in about a page a day for the last couple of weeks so we’re getting back on track.  So much so that marvel greenlit an 8th issue for us.  I came up with a better ending but needed the pages.  very grateful that they let us do our thing.

For art that good, I’m prepared to wait. Especially if it keeps the continuity of the style intact. Delays in big comic book events aren’t anything new, but it can be somewhat irksome to see an artist replaced at the last minute, somewhat derailing the momentum of a series. Sometimes it works wonders, such as JG Jones getting some help from Carlos Pachecos and Doug Mahnke in Final Crisis. Most times it doesn’t.

But like I said, Marquez’s art is well worth being patient for, and has been the real highlight of Civil War II so far.

  1. Bendis can be best described as a cancer, trenchfoot or a bad case of cockrot. He’s singlehandedly ruining Marvel.
