DC Princesses

DC Comics haven’t exactly had a fantastic track record as of late when it comes to appealing to certain demographics. Hell, some of their characters haven’t been anything more than sexed-up dolls in spandex, but the times they are a’changin’. Some of these characters will still be page three material, make no mistake. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t be more than that and stand out as reimagined heroes with actual personalities that happen to be inspirational. Which is what DC’s doing for a bunch of their female characters.

Thanks to a recent initiative to actually spread their demographic wings, DC Comics have found some measure of success with reworked titles such as Batgirl and Gotham Academy. They’ve got more stuff on the way, but DC Super Hero Girls might just be their anchor title for the future. Starring Batgirl, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Bumblebee, Katana, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, the new series is essentially a DC version of Disney’s infamous princesses. DC Super Hero Girls will be aimed at the 6-12 year old market, while I look to get some merchandise from the sidelines and look even weirder than the usual comic book fan. “DC Entertainment is home to the most iconic and well-known Super Heroes including Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Batgirl,” said DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson via THR.

DC Super Hero Girls represents the embodiment of our long-term strategy to harness the power of our diverse female characters. I am so pleased that we are able to offer relatable and strong role models in a unique way, just for girls.

And speaking of moichendise, the new initiative will include the likes of comics, clothing, lego and animated direct-to-video movies from next year. I kinda dig the designs for these characters. Harley Quinn looks adorable, and Katana is finally getting some much-needed spotlight after being a kickass addition to the over-to-soon single season of Beware The Batman.

But most importantly, I’m just happy to see comic book characters get a newer, younger audience. After all, the kids of today will be responsible for introducing a new generation of fans to these heroes and villains. That, and I bet the DC Princesses would mop the floor with the likes of Belle, Mulan and Ariel. Hell, they’ve taken down Solomon Grundy already:

  1. So does this promotes violence against women because Grundy is reconsidering his stance or is he a sexist for not giving women the opportunity for fighting?
OR are Supergirl, Batgirl and.. someone psychopaths for attacking someone who already declared not to fight.

Like so many feminists this shows just how it all usually pans out in real life.

Party A decides not to get involved. Feminists come along and get them involved anyway for apparently promoting a patriarchal society without allowing equal opportunities because they decide to turn a blind eye and apparently ignore what’s right in front of them….

Urrr… I mean this show has nothing to do with feminism! Yeah. That’s what I meant.

Honestly, this looks bleh. Women and girls like comics not because we want everythng all pink and sparkly and pincessy. We like to see heroes fight crime/supervillains/save the world. We just like some of those heroes to be women to whom we can relate to. Tutus and sparklies are not that exciting for many girls past the age of 6, and if they are that’s what Disney is for.

Why is power girl not included in the DC princesses list? In fact, power girl is what got me in the beginning to DC comic and the rest of other early super-hero’s works. It is an pity that she seen vanish from the market that even my buddies don’t know who she is when I mention her name in the comic store!
