There’s a new Mega Man coming!

After years of neglect, abuse, and a handful of cancelled games, Capcom has finally seen the light, and brought back the beloved blue bomber! Hooray! Oh wait, what’s this? My dreams being crushed again because I didn’t read the press release properly? Yes, Mega Man is coming back…but as a brand new cartoon TV series. Queue the sad trombone.

In what I can only believe is a move made to take this piss out of fans, Capcom has announced that Mega Man is returning as an animated series that’ll debut in 2017.

Capcom, Man of Action Entertainment and Dentsu Entertainment USA teaming up to bring you 26-episode Mega Man TV series.

We are very excited about the opportunity to introduce an all-new Mega Man to loyal fans and kids,” says Dentsu’s Yuichi Kinoshita “Having a celebrated character from Japan reimagined by Man Of Action is the ideal project for Dentsu Entertainment USA.”

Man of Action – the folks behind Ben 10 – is equally chuffed, with Duncan Rouleau saying:

“The 1990s Mega Man TV series was cool and different than other series targeted at kids during that time.  It featured great action, but also brought the laughs.  Mega Man is a character that is even more relevant for today’s kids and we are really looking forward to creating something new that still respects the long tradition of the character.”

It’s not the first Mega Man cartoon. There was a series in the 90’s that tried – and largely succeeded – in bringing the blue guy to TV screens, and he was a character on the Nintendo-themed Captain N as well.

I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather have an actual new Mega Man game – but that doesn’t seem like it’ll ever happen. In 2011, Capcom confirmed that it had canned the highly-anticipated Mega Man Legends 3. Before that it binned Mega Man projects like the highly ambitious Mega Man Universe. Me? I’m still convinced that Capcom hates Mega Man and its fans.

Thankfully, there’s a glimmer of hope in the wonderful-looking Mighty no 9 from Mega Man designer Keiji Inafune. It’s Mega Man in everything but name, and should not only keep fans happy, but serve as a digital “up yours” to the folks at Capcom who’ve been ignoring him.

For kids? What exactly is their frame of reference to want to watch the blue CPU? Certainly no games…

Merchandising. That’s what Capcom is thinking. Cartoons these days are made to sell merchandise and Capcom is hoping the same success that saw Ben 10 being plastered on every lunch box will follow suit with MegaMan.
