You all know Watch Dogs. It’s that hit PC game where players can hack their way through a corrupt totalitarian regime with a magic cell-phone before hacking the human body with a baton and bullets when the heat is on. And like most games these days, it’s getting a patch. A patch that should make it oh so much prettier.
PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 players have already received that update, with PC and Xbox players now waiting for the patch to address several issues such as random bits of broken gameplay and a a few mission-killing bugs.
But it’s the chance to sort out the visuals that should be of interest here. Here’s the full list via the Ubisoft forums regarding the PC fixes:
- Fixed graphical glitches on Low & Medium settings.
- Fixed some crashes on SLI configurations.
- Implemented several performance improvements.
- Implemented a few control improvements.
- Fixed issues causing infinite messaging and timing-out when trying to access the Online Shop from the Extras Menu while Uplay is set to Offline mode.
- Fixed issues connecting to a Multiplayer game.
- Implemented several mouse modifications.
- Fixed “Drinking Game” control issue where wrong information was displayed when played with a gamepad.
- Fixed “Chess Game” control issue.
- Fixed bug where the invasion setting was never saved.
- Fixed graphical issues during cut scenes and cinematics.
- Fixed several graphical and texture bugs.
- Removed Vista OS check to prevent false positives.
- Added game version in main menu.
The PC platform will always be the powerhouse of gaming graphics. And now, this official patch, coupled with the one that unlocks thoise hidden away E3 2012 reveal graphics, Watch Dogs will finally look up to scratch. Hopefully. I have no idea. It looks pretty enough to me already, because I’ve been mesmerised by those smoke and particle effects.

By who exactly?
Zoe uses a Mac – and you’ve seen her photoshop graphics
Darryn is too busy not doing his best Dark Helmet impression with that shiny Geralt statue
Geoff would make it look worse because he’s a troll
Gavin would get it to 1079p @ 59fps – so close yet so far

What is up with this trend and why is nobody making more of a fuss about it? FFS, it’s not right that they reveal the games with this amazing graphics and the downgrades (and then later patch it in Ubi’s case)..
In Dark Souls 2 case, on a forum where I complained about the graphical downgrade, I was told “You don’t play Dark Souls for the graphics”…What is up with this blind acceptance of clearly falsified information. There are hardly any official statements from devs saying look, we downgraded blah blah . It’s always after the fact. Regardless if it’s a good game, this is wrong, and we shouldn’t blindly accept things as it is…..Jeez, gamers are the reason the industry is so fucked. We buy into all these kak practices as if it’s the natural progression of things….

Have this been happening with PC games? I mean, most of the games I’ve seen revealed for PC, looks like what they’ve shown…This seems like a new thing to me, they reveal amazing trailers that looks much different in the final product

Like A:CM? It’s on special on Steam right now for $5, & enough idiots have bought it to move it into the top 10 sellers list.
There’s a reason PC gamers have been complaining about shitty ports for years. It’s because shitty ports are just that, especially when they don’t take advantage of the benefits of a PC. Like this lovely obvious example.
Monado
June 19, 2014 at 09:05
Not even talking about mind you, they do this for consoles as well. ACM was the OG of this trend. But yeah, PC does get some pretty shitty ports….

June 19, 2014 at 09:07
Bad news. It was not a port. The PC was the main platform and thus it was just a crappy game to begin with. Dead Space 2 is a crappy port.

June 19, 2014 at 09:27
Lol. No.
Think again. It was designed with the console in mind. Look at the amount of active skills vs the amount of buttons on a controller.
Anyone who believes that the game was designed for PC first is in for a shock. It was designed for console and just run on PC first because they knew the masses would not buy it on console first since Diablo was predominantly a PC genre.
The best though?
The fact that back in the beginning they were all like “Oh no, the game is being created with PC in mind first. Console isn’t even on our radar”. Then after poop hit the fan and it was better on console they said “The game was always meant to be played on console. We designed it so that it could be played there”
Double standards… That being said… The game is actually good now. I won’t lie

June 19, 2014 at 09:58
No seriously. They’ve changed it a lot and it is now far better.
Look, there is the glaringly obvious part of skills and the inability to specialise in a specific skill set. However, they have really balanced out the skills now and made the end game more enjoyable.
Instead of Maphisto runs you now have rifts. You actually have ways of making gold with bounties. So yeah, the game is very good now. Honest. That coming from me. You should know by now how I used to feel about the game

It’s been happening for years, actually. Go back as far as Crytek going multi-platform and they openly admitted to cutting out things that worked on PC but not on console. (Cevat Yerli, specifically).
And you have developers talking about the ‘politics’ of game performance between consoles and PC, when discussing why they limited a game this way, or that way.
Parity, it’s the new microtransactions.

June 19, 2014 at 08:52
The problem is that the majority of people still buy games from developers regardless of having burnt their fingers ten times. They just don’t learn. They keep buying, the developers will keep doing the same thing, because why not?

The latest Ubisoft patch HAS KILLED PERFORMANCE!!!
SLI 770GTX and 4670K
Before patch 96+FPS with stuttering.
After patch now getting 1-2 FPS for LOOOOONG periods – MSI Afterburner shows my cards are running 20% utilization! WTF!
GK
June 20, 2014 at 15:00
Here’s the proof!!! See the percentage next to TEMP in the upper left – that’s utilization percentage – when there was stuttering before driving it into the 30FPS and below – now there is stuttering down to 1/2 FPS and it shows like 20% Card utilization! What the hell Ubisoft – you just F#$$#$# the game! Running on Dual 770GTXs, 4670K @4.1GHZ all cores, 16GB Ripjaw 1600MHZ Dual Channel DDR3, on Kingston Hyper X 120GB SSD! Seriously this is SO CRAP!
