I told you yesterday that we might be expecting a bit of PSN maintenance next week.The servers were probably being updated to make provision for a few new PlayStation 4 features to be patched in with a bit of firmware. Sony’s has now detailed that update, revealing SHAREfactory – a seemingly robust video-editor built right in to the console.
SHAREfactory is easily the biggest new feature coming in firmware 1.7, so let’s take a look at that first.
“With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video,” Sony says.
Check it out, and pay special attention to those nifty inFamous transitions. I wonder if they’ll be releasing updates adding similar transitions for future games. Update 1.70 will also add the ability to save your customised, edited videos to USB. It’s pretty neat – and I think you can expect a deluge of gaming videos on your favourite video sites in the very near future. I also predict sales of that PlayStation 4 Eye will soon be skyrocketing.
Another new feature in the update brings it inline with Steam pre-orders; PlayStation 4 gamers will now be able to pre-load their digital purchases and get playing as soon as the clock strikes midnight on release day. But wait, there’s more! Only we don;t know what it is.
“And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.”
I’m starting to sound like a bit of a broken record here, but I’m really waiting for that update that allows MP3 playback, DLNA and the ability to play Audio CD’s. that would be nice. Still, this new update – set apparently, for April 30 – seems to be bringing in a wealth of welcome additions.

Nah Im with you on the media streaming capabilities. Such a thoughtless omission. Sure I knwo loads of new displays have media playing fucntionality, hell some even have networking options, but for fucksakes, drop 8k on a console that cant even play an MP3? Fuck right off.
