It took six months to take SimCity Offline

Maxis has done a big 180 degree turnaround, and has announced it’lll finally be adding the much requested, previously impossible-to-implement offline mode to city builder SimCity. In a new update, lead game engineer Simon Fox has said in a new blog post that implementing offline wasn’t as easy as flipping a switch.

“Lucy Bradshaw once said that offline wouldn’t be possible ‘without a significant amount of engineering work’, and she was right,” said Fox. “By the time we’re finished we will have spent over 6 ½ months working to write and rewrite core parts of the game to get this to work. Even things that seem trivial, like the way that cities are saved and loaded, had to be completely reworked in order to make this feature function correctly.

“I wish it were as simple as flipping a switch and telling the game to communicate with a dummy client rather than our server, but it’s more than that. Entire calculations had to be rewritten in order to make the game function correctly.”

SimCity, he says, was originally written to rely on magical cloud servers to keep the simulation, and that making all of that happen locally requires quite a bit of work.

“This meant rewriting the entire system, which previously existed in Java, and putting it into C++,” he further explained. “We’ve had to knock out the internet pipe stuff. There’s lots of code that hits the servers looking for information. We’ve had to write a lot of code to produce that data locally, specifically for region information.

“Now, all of the regional simulation needs to be done locally. The algorithms governing trading between cities needed to be retuned in order to make the behavior between cities more responsive for this type of play. This in itself required major optimizations in order to run the simulation locally. We have an obligation to make the game fun and functional on all specs of machines. We wouldn’t want someone who was enjoying the Multiplayer game to find the Single Player game crippled due to poor optimization.

“We had to remove parts of the game for it to function properly as well. This means removing lots of code integral to Multiplayer include code and UI supporting Trading, Social Features, Global Market, Leaderboards and Achievements. And, all without crippling the Multiplayer game.”

Maxis has routinely said that EA did not force the online requirement, and that it has nothing to do with DRM – and that may be the case. they clearly had a vision for the game and its scope – even if that vision has really bitten them in the ass. They greatly underestimated how many people like playing games offline, alone, without all that social nonsense that gamers are being force-fed all the time.

Good!!! All they had to do is ask people if they wanted SP or just MP. It’s their own damn fault. Forcing people to play it their way bit them in the ass. Now let’s see what they intend to fuck up next. Personally I am as content as a cucumber to wait for a proper sequel. Not this patched tiny town shit that can’t be expanded bigger than most towns in the Northern Cape and don’t tell me to mod the damn game!

To think if only the game came out six months later it could’ve sold twice as well.
    Huge sacrifice, clearly.

There is a massive difference in publishing houses.Valve relies on consumer input and thus makes their DRM (yes steamworks is actually DRM) seem attractive. Ubisoft tries to stay under the radar but ultimately their system is bad and people dislike it. EA proudly announces their games will be always on and just plain ignores their consumer base. And Activision just keeps on making CoD and sulking about Blizzard.

I wouldn’t rate Bugthesda that highly. They could definitely learn a thing or two from CD Projekt Red. But in terms of shit publishers and developers, Bethesda and Zenimax are right there alongside EA and Activision in my book. The amount of lies they spewed during and after Skyrim was released was absolutely disgusting. Not to mention, the misrepresentation of their software during Oblivion. Any one remember Radiant AI or what an advance it was supposed to be? Remember what a dud it really was?

But if i have no internet for any reason, most of my steam games can still be played in offline mode and even when i am playing a game while being connected, it wont crash/stop a single player game when the internet stops… Thats why steam “DRM” is okay because it does not prevent you from playing with other systems do when it cant authenticate…

Not only is it attractive but at least the games in your steam library will still be available if Valve goes belly up. Simply release a patch not requiring steam to ever log in again and you still have your games.

Some of the games on Steam don’t even use the optional Steamworks DRM. You can copy the installation folder from your Steam folder, put it somewhere else & run the game from there directly without using the client.

WTF you have to run that client after starting the game from STEAM is beyond stupid. And when their servers are unavailable, which has happened to me a few times, you can’t play the game. The recent patches has made the game a lot better. With a larger maps mod and offline its worth installing again.

They should have released it for the next gen consoles after Titan Fall and Destiny prove that gamers want always on-line DRM updates, Maps, social plug ins, DLC AKA FORZA 4 Tracks for FORZA 5 behind pay walls, Patches, Micro Transactions and redeem codes ALL ON THE CLOUD.

Sim City was way ahead of its time. Releasing a DRM game during the 7th gen console generation where the console does not need a MANDATORY day one update out of the box… what were they thinking 😛

            January 15, 2014 at 11:34

Please show me pay to win in WoW. All you can buy in the store is cute pets. Every other pay to win system is illegal.GW2 has pay to win but not WoW. Both games are horrible though and everyone should be playing DayZ. 😛

          • Gareth L (That Guy)

            January 15, 2014 at 11:35

How far can you get in WoW without paying though?

          • Kromas

            January 15, 2014 at 11:46

Apart from the sub you can’t pay for anything other than pets. So everyone can get to the same level with the same gear.Depending on play time.

          • Gareth L (That Guy)

            January 15, 2014 at 12:04

That’s what I meant, bud – the sub. I can play The Old Republic without any obligation of paying a cent for as much as I want and as far as I want.

Yes, there are restrictions, but those are conveniences more than hindrances. With Blizzard I’m still paying top dollar, both monthly and for an expansion pack, for not enough value to be honest.

          • Kromas

            January 15, 2014 at 12:11

Subs are not pay to win. Also you can buy items and money in Star Wars and that is pay to win.

          • Gareth L (That Guy)

            January 15, 2014 at 12:30

True, they haven’t adopted an actual pay-to-win method yet. What they are doing though is charging for a lot and not giving the value in return.

Their quality of games has dropped considerably over the past decade, and they are riding on their name to make the sales, regardless – and it’s working really well for them. They have a strong marketing team that knows that they only have to press our nostalgic button and they’ve got 5 million pre-orders.

            I’ve gone of topic though.

          • Kromas

            January 15, 2014 at 12:37

But it is fun going off topic. I still enjoy their cinematics though. Starcraft however is still top notch compared to … oh wait EA screwed up all their RTS games and they don’t exist anymore. 😛

          • Gareth L (That Guy)

            January 15, 2014 at 12:45

            Hehe, a new C&C would’ve been fun.

Back to the Blizzard-quality thing. Their stories are all so damn similar now. WarCraft has Arthas, StarCraft has Kerrigan and Diablo has Leah. All the dialogue is almost identical too, heck you can get drunk for drinking each time they say “corrupted” or “torn asunder!”. 😛

Their cinematic visual quality is top-notch. The cinematic dialogue though… yeeesh.

          • Kromas

            January 15, 2014 at 13:21

          • Gareth L (That Guy)

            January 15, 2014 at 12:05

No, there was outrage, and they couldn’t justify it without admitting to what they were intending. So they canned it.

            January 15, 2014 at 12:12

What is your criteria for pay to win?

Besides, Diablo 3 still has RMAH and is still online only. While being one of the best selling PC games of all time. Where is the fan service? No it will come in a farking expansion pack a new loot system and still just online only. Say what you will but Maxis is giving us all these updates at no cost or hidden in an expansion.

And Blizzard continue to lie to us and think we are morons.

I only really care about Starcraft anymore. But I still believe we should give Blizzard the benefit of the doubt. It is not like they have been screwing us for years. At least let us see what they do now that they are free from Activision.

          • ToshZA

            January 15, 2014 at 14:50

Ok so I’ve read the entire conversation – and I’ve decided to add my two cents here.

Blizzard are nowhere near EA. Not even close. They’re still making great games. They screwed up with something on the PC D3, but fixed it for console, and will do so on PC too. SC2 is amazing. WoW has millions of people playing.

And here’s the thing EVERYONE forgets. Hearthstone – completely free, not pay to win. Heroes of the Storm, the new MOBA from Blizz, likely free, not pay to win. And everyone who’s played Hearthstone can tell you – it rocks. Its free, it rocks, it’s typical Blizzard.

Diablo 3 exp is going to be great too. Something everyone also forgets is that diablo 2 without the expansion sucked as well, but they made up for it with the expansion.

Blizzard remain true to their core. They still love games, and gamers. Raging on one failed idea isn’t the same as the entire company screwing their clients over – aka EA.

          • Gareth L (That Guy)

            January 15, 2014 at 15:01

So, what you’re saying is that you just don’t want to admit it. 😛

Kidding, look you’re right. I may have exaggerated a bit, but I still don’t think that Blizzard titles are anywhere near their initial quality, yet that nostalgia is what is still getting their sales.

Agreed, PS2 was a godsend. The PS1 wasn’t bad either.

Hey, what can I say, love that effing game! Racked up nice score last two times I jammed a quick session, 29 and 32 with K/D 29 and 4.5 respectively

I am very proud of the 29 KD scored that day, normally, I log in once per each faction, play until killed once, log out and do the other faction etc.

Rolling as Max in Biolab defence, with a Engi being my repair buddy, we both racket up plenty XP there! Best KD I had ever before this 29 was 7.2 I think

Moral to the story, Simcity should of been offline game with online Mp mode. The idea of purely online games is fine for games like WOW ect but not Simcity which all previous Simcity games were completely offline… stupid EA yet again..

Maybe it would have been fine if not for all the server issues they had. But there was no excuse to leave out the option. If only they asked their consumer base before they started developing.

Or make a game that is how the gamers (the customers) want it. You only have to spend ten minutes on any gaming forum to realize that everyone hates DRM.

Don’t forget the Darkspore debacle. EA has made some serious screwups the past few years and it’s going to take a lot for me to buy an EA game ever again.

Well, the first bunch they released didn’t actually work at all. The DVD’s were useless. So you went out, bought a physical copy, but had to download the entire game.

Bigger maps and teraforming is just way more important to me… Everything I do is online anyway. So the online didn’t bother me. The damn small maps piss me off though.

“They greatly underestimated how many people like playing games offline,
alone, without all that social nonsense that gamers are being force-fed
    all the time.”

APPLIES TO EVERY GAME DEVELOPER OUT THERE
