Fight bullying with SumoBoy

SumoBoy Lunch Box Cinematic Scene

Bullying is a horrible thing, experienced by most children, adolescents and even adults. SumoBoy is inspired by the Anti Bullying movement and offers people the chance to find their inner strength. Go throw money at it.

With a protagonist who looks a lot like the boy from Up, the game looks too cute not to enjoy:

Our protagonist, Oji, is the epitome of the unlike hero. As an orphan tormented by bullies, he is far from a traditional video game hero. However, that is just what makes our game so special; Oji’s greatest attribute is his empathy for those in trouble. His vulnerability and sweet demeanour makes him the perfect hero for our story.

Oji’s inner transformation from victim to hero is mirrored by the ‘healing’ of Seishin; as Oji helps the spirits in need and cleanses the realm, he finds his inner strength and overcomes the obstacles in his own life.

SumoBoy Earth Level

SumoBoy is currently looking for love on Kickstarter and features gameplay reminiscent of Bastion, original Zelda and Diablo III. It’s all about finding your strength and overcoming bullying, sounds like a fantastic message in a game. Many games teach us to find our strength, but it just feels like the moral of this one could really strike a chord with so many gamers – how many of us were teased as kids for being geeky or just different? I think we can all identify with the adorably designed protagonist in this game.

I originally thought the header was an image from Up but couldn’t remember any scenes like that.

    It actually sounds pretty interesting.

You know, I read about a Pixar rep flying out with the movie to show to a dying 10 year old girl, and about 7 hrs after watching the movie (at that stage, not yet even at cinemas) she sadly passed away.

(not sure if story is true, but good story nonetheless if it is)

After reading through (most of) the Kickstarter page I really want this game to get made.

    That’s a very interesting $8 000 backer reward.

I hope this get made and that it is good. I think that the message is a really relevant one.

Fortunately my kids have not yet really been bullied to any extent but I have enrolled the eldest one in Jiu Jitsu and the younger one will go when he is old enough. It is not about fighting back but about equipping them with self worth and confidence which will hopefully mean that they will not be the target of bullying, but if they are I think that it will equip them where they may be able to handle it better. Also being part of a group that is in a very disciplined environment is just good for their social skills.

And hopefully they never get bullied.
Also my cynical side demands that I also say: hopefully they never become bullies.
