BioShock Infinite DLC announced!

Irrational Games boss Ken Levine has been very teasy on Twitter of late, saying that he’s “very excited” for something today, at 8am EST. That time happened to be just moments ago. Here’s what the guy behind Bioshock’s been so excited about. It’s not about that Vita version of the game, in case you were wondering.

Yup, It’s the first DLC for Bioshock Infinite, one of two games that are likely candidates for this year’s Game of the Year awards. Here’s what it’s all about and it’s not one, or two – but three bits of DLC.  The first is a combat focused bit of DLC called “Clash in the clouds” that’s a little bit like…horde mode. It’ll be available today on Steam, and will roll out to other platforms shortly.

More exciting though is that there will be a two-part DLC story that’s a…detective story that’s set back in Rapture! Called Burial at Sea, it will star both Booker as private investigator and Elizabeth as  his femme fatale. And you’ll get to play as both of them. Here’s a teaser.

“We really listened to the fans and we know how they feel about Elizabeth,” Levin said to Polygon. “We decided we wanted to shift things around a little bit for the third one, so the player character in the third DLC, you get to play Elizabeth and the gameplay is quite different as her. She’s not the tank that Booker is. And you’ll see how all the stories come together.”

BioShockInfinite_BurialAtSea-Pt1_Rapture_Online

Rapture was shown briefly in BioShock Infinite (spoilers!), and Levine has been working on this campaign DLC since wrapping that game up.

“I knew very early on in Infinite that Rapture was going to be part of it because, if nothing else, nothing would be clearer in helping me explain what was happening in the world, that they were all reflections of each other, than being there, than showing that image.”

Here’s what the press release says about the DLC:

Come back to Rapture in a story that finds Booker and Elizabeth on the eve of the underwater city’s fall from grace. Developed by Irrational Games, the developer of the original BioShock and BioShock Infinite, this DLC features Rapture as you’ve never seen it before—a shining jewel at the bottom of the ocean, built almost entirely from scratch in the BioShock Infinite engine. Gameplay has been modified to give the player an original BioShock combat experience that merges the best parts of BioShock and BioShock Infinite: new weapons, new Plasmids/Vigors, Tears, Sky-Lines, and Big Daddies.

One of two? Oh sir, you jest.. Last of us surpasses this baby on more than one level. While I enjoyed Bioshock Infinite, it paled in comparison to the first one and it was just too simple for its own good. Cool world and characters, but horribly simplistic gameplay…

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad game, but it is very simple. What you can do with your arsenal and how you can apply it in the world is disappointingly limited. But the game world itself is magical. There’s something surreal about Columbia, and Elizabeth is an awesome companion I just wish they had put a bit more into the gameplay.

I’ll do a video review of it once I can get decent HD footage off the PS3.

Video review or Bioshock? Yeah, I ran into a snag with recording at a decent resolution on PS3. On xbox 360 it’s a different matter though. I can record at HD with no problem.

          • RinceJigglyboobhater

            July 30, 2013 at 14:34

How are you recording it? I need to get what you are using, some middle interface?

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            July 30, 2013 at 14:45

Yep, I have a basic setup for now as I’m teething, and getting a feel for how to present the videos, but at the moment I record off a capture card. Xbox 360 has no hassles with recording raw footage, but the PS3 needs a component cable (because it blocks recording off HDMI). That’s also why I haven’t done any reviews for the awesome games yet 😛

But it’s cool, while I’m doing short vids via the box, I get to practice my editing and voice work (which I’m hoping is getting better now)

Exactly, I was very disappointed that I had even less combinations then I had in Bioshock 1, and even less ways to apply them. It was far too eager to be a corridor shooter for my liking.

A title can be underrated or overrated, and still have no bearing on quality. Take Spec Ops for instance, dismally underrated at launch, but now considered to be one of the best games of this generation. Bioshock Infinite definitely overrated for being a basic corridor shooter, yet still a pretty cool game. Last of us, exceptional title, yet the media frenzy behind it, leaves it hinging on the overrated bin.
Another classic example is GTA 4, HIGHLY overrated, yet still enjoyable, but not nearly as exceptional as the media made it out to be. Saints Row 3, extremely UNDERRATED, but a fun zany title, that won my Game of the Year for 2011.

Yes! don;t get me wrong, I though the Last of Us is indeed a great game, but it’s overrated. As you rightly pint out though, it doesnt mean it’s a bad game – just an overrated one.

Bioshock 1 is very eerie and dark. Also scary! And way more difficult than Infinite. I found Infinite to just be a good ol’ fun run ‘n gun game with a story that blew my mind!

That’s precisely why I didn’t buy it during the Steam summer sale. Yay only $30! Oh…. season pass, no thanks I’ll wait 🙁

I hate season’s pass. The original game is already so bloody expensive. Would rather spend it on a much needed gpu.
