A story about a stranger who improved my Hearthstone game

Good guy Guy

I spent the entire weekend in a hospital, not as a patient thankfully, but as somebody waiting for a friend to get better (my girlfriend’s sister, if you are wondering who). Long story short, everything is just fine – she’s being discharged later today.

Anyways, while waiting for diagnoses, doctors, and everything in-between, I played a lot of Hearthstone on my phone. I don’t know if it was the circumstances at the time, or just poor luck (or both), but I was losing horrendously. I think I won one game for every three to five I lost, and try as I might, I just couldn’t pull myself free from rank 20! Being as stubborn as mule, I refused to acknowledge that I was doing something wrong. I also refused to adjust my tactics, or my decks for that matter.

Instead, I chose to curse the old gods. I firmly blamed them for this terrible rut of loss I found myself in. Basically, if Hearthstone an actual, physical card game, this would be me…

TABLE FLIP

But then, my luck changed. my girlfriend’s friend, along with her fiancé, arrived to see a relative of theirs who was at the same hospital. They bumped into us in the waiting room. I was playing Hearthstone at the time, so I offered a quick hello, and rudely carried on swiping away at my phone.

I was in a particularly tough game, and I was struggling along without a word. I didn’t pay too much attention to what was going on around me, but I was vaguely aware that my girlfriend and her friend were having a conversation a few metres away.

The fiancé, as it turns out, was not interested in their discussion. He was behind me, quietly watching me flounder along. I soon found out that he played Hearthstone too, and thanks to some quick advice from him, I ended up winning my game.

YAY

He then asked me if he could take a quick look at my decks. I happily obliged, and handed over my phone.

He gave them all a quick lookover, and made some suggestions as to what cards I should consider removing or throwing into some. He paid close attention to my one Paladin deck in particular, and adjusted the minions and spells himself.

He then handed me back my phone, and waited  for me to start a new game. I played two more under his supervision, and won them both rather decisively.

Shortly after those sweet victories, he and his fiancée jetted off to see their relative. I waved goodbye sadly, thinking that without my newfound Hearthstone friend, I would revert back to losing horribly.

As it  turns out, that Paladin deck is quite something, and the advice I received, invaluable. When I climbed into bed last night, I was rank 15, and I’m now on the verge of cracking 14. This to some, isn’t a big deal. For me however, it really is .

Why? Well, to put it all into perspective, last month, after much struggling, I managed to end on rank 15. That’s the highest I’ve ever achieved! I’ve now reached it in a single day.

So thank you, random stranger friend, for your awesome Hearthstone advice and recommendations. You sir, are a gentleman, and one I am incredibly happy to have bumped into.

Now about your Battlenet tag, I forgot to grab it. Could you please send it forth? With it, and with your guidance, I’m confident I could crack rank 10 and higher!

  1. The quickest way for you to get good at Hearthstone Matty, is to review some scary af games. The inspiration and lessons you learn from those will catapult you into rank 5 and beyond. Trust me.

Is there a group somewhere Battlenet tags can be/are shared even if it just for the socially retarded to spectate games for those stupid quests that forces you to interact sociably with other players.

Check Hearthstone South Africa on Facebook. Lots of local players and tournaments. We have attracted the attention of Blizzard as well.

Matty: “Guys, I’ve discovered that inspiration lies in the kind words of strangers”
Lagz: “WHAT? STRANGERS? Dear heavens man… what’s wrong with you? DON’T YOU KNOW ‘STRANGER DANGER’!!! And online as well? Young man, he could have robbed you blind or stolen your identity, or shaved your head!!!”

Also seen some crazy decks being built lately but there is always a counter to the counter…Enjoyment out of playing is also the fun part even if you loose. Oh who am I kidding, winning is everything!

This is a big part of why I wish you could let someone see your deck / cards. I would love to help some friends out with theory / strat, but the game has very little online facility for it.

I agree, a friend and I usually just use Skype to help each other draft good decks.
