StarCraft 2: Legacy Of The Void begins its beta on March 31

SC LOFTV

It’s been a hell of a long road for StarCraft. With development kicking off on a sequel to the mega-popular real-time strategy game back in 2003, it wouldn’t be until 2007 when Blizzard would officially announce the title. It’d be another three years before fans got to play the first StarCraft 2 game, Wings Of Liberty. It was then another three years before the Zerg-centric Heart Of The Swarm was released. There’s one more chapter to go however, as Legacy Of The Void focuses on the Protoss. And that game will be going into a closed beta at the end of the month.

As per usual with Blizzard, only a select amount of players will get to experience the rough cut of the game in order to provide feedback on it. “The StarCraft II Legacy of the Void Beta is on the way, and with only two weeks left until its launch we wanted to take a look at the goals and expectations around the multiplayer beta,” Blizzard wrote on their Battle.net blog.

As you are likely aware, we’ve been trying to be as open as possible with the status of our development, and strongly believe that the increased cooperation between developers and players is beneficial to StarCraft II. To be clear, our goal for this expansion is to work together with all of you to make Legacy of the Void as awesome as possible.

For this reason, we decided to start the beta sooner than we normally would have in the past. This should provide ample time for feedback and iteration. However, this naturally results in a few things:

  • Some things at the start of the beta will feel more rough than usual
  • We will be missing some units, improvements, features, etc
  • The beta will run for a longer period of time than usual

Legacy Of The Void will of course feature some extensive changes to units, resulting in a whole new meta-game for seasoned pros. Battle.net has an extensive list of what’s new in the Protoss hood, if you’re into that kind of thing.

  1. Probably makes me a bad person, but I’ve never played SC2.

I played the first on a friend’s computer. Was a good campaign, but I don’t have much interest in online multiplayer (which is where the real value lies). So one day I’ll get the trilogy on special or something.

Blizzard always has a 50% off Black Friday sale. It’s when I always buy their games.

Me neither. I’ve had zero interest in it since day one. And I did play Starcraft.

Missing out on some of the best gameplay and storylines available to PC gamers. I loved everything about SC2 and not competitively speaking either.

Best storyline? It’s a ripoff of a lot of space movies. Heck, it’s mostly a rehash of the first one.

It’s really good. Blizzard knows how to make strategy games even though they’ve given that up for MMOs and MOBAs 🙁

In Spirit yes, Grey Goo plays a lot like a Classic CnC title, Or So I hear, my PC won’t Handle Goo too well 🙁

Not really. Only about five Westwood guys are still there and they’re not in charge.

Hmm. No. Almost, but no. C&C, when looked at, was won by the fastest developed army.

In Warcraft 2, I held demons (high end unit) at bay with small groups of well controlled archers. in C&C I could never, ever get that sort of thing right, well, not easily. But in SC and Wacraft 2 I could, with superior strategy, win games.

whaaat ! you seriously have to try this game, it rocks, the development on it happens on like a daily basis, as most of the game is online. So any map issues get resolved very fast.

Will buy the bundle when all is released. Played this at a friends house. SC2 is a massive improvement over SC1. I love how you must plan your upgrades in between missions. It affects the gameplay during the campaign tremendously.

            Warcraft 3, original.

Either way, an army of Dark Archons was always fun. Plus they’re red. And red shit is awesome!!!!

What? This? It’s not a chainsaw, don’t worry. What’s that? Over there? Look!

For me it was the “Steal their stuff and kill them with it turtling strategy” that made them fun. I just loved steamrolling over a battlefield with Siegetanks backed up by Carriers and Ultralisks cause Dark Archons. 😛

You have an issue with Tassadar? I mean the man did sacrifice himself (sorta) to save the day.

Don’t tell me you like Zeratul more? Lately he is a poor mans’ Deckard Cain.

          • Kensei Seraph

            March 19, 2015 at 10:53

Tassadar is/was/will be (I somewhat suspect that this is all a vision of the future that someone [maybe Raynor or Sarah] are having that will then flashback to before Starcraft and Starcraft 3 will be them rewriting everything) awesome and learning more about him is half the reason I want to get LotV.

Deckard Cain is nothing special. Zeratul is. Dammit.
