Mass Effect Andromeda novels will answer big lore questions

Mass Effect Andromeda isn’t being called a reboot, but it’s for all intents and purposes exactly that. There’s a new team behind it at BioWare, Ii isn’t going to be directly linking to past entries in the series, and it’s set in a whole new part of the universe, with a whole new cast. This doesn’t mean there aren’t some lingering questions as to how this new trilogy will refer back to the one that started it all, and that set to be explored in the recently announced novelizations.

Publisher of the four new upcoming novels Titan has detailed their plans for the series a little more, specifically about how they will tie together some of the older Mass Effect stories, and the imminent newer ones. While some books will introduce new characters and locales, others will answer some of the lingering questions avid fans have concerning the Mass Effect universe, and how it links up with Andromeda.

“The novels will act as prequel and sequels to the events in the games and will become part of the overarching Mass Effect saga. They will focus on key characters and answer the many questions fans have been asking.”

That sounds a lot more exciting than many  other videogame novel adaptations, and reminds me a lot of the approach Disney took with Star Wars and their highly successful novels leading into the new film trilogy. The first of the four books releases this August, while another two will release in March and September of 2017 respectively. The final in the current run will only land in 2018 – just in time for talk of the Andromeda sequel. Maybe.

There are many questions Andromeda may or may not answer, so it’s nice to see die-hard fans will have other avenues to explore the engrossing universe of Mass Effect. All we can hope for now are novels that are just as interesting as the games they are named after.

I quite enjoyed the previous Mass Effect novels, they were by no means classics in the making, but they added some extra colour to the universe, some of the characters from ME3 were even created in the novels.

    Looking forward to these

Never read any of these. Is the writing any good? The few game tie novels I have picked up read like Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance pulp fantasy. *shudder*

Theyr not terrible, probably about on par with the witcher novels in terms of overall effect.
the writing doesnt feel inspired or anything, but it doesnt feel like a fan-fiction atleast.

If they’re on par with the Witcher novels by Sapkowski, then that’s actually pretty good. Loved those books.

Sapkowskis writing was a little difficult to follow at times, especially in the Last Wish, although that has more to do with it being the first book and the books seemingly random story structure.

These are a much easier read, but story wise theyr pretty good, and it ties into and colours the mass effect universe, which is a plus.

Bear in mind that some of the difficulty came from it being translations of his original works in Polish.

And I must admit, I didn’t find the stories to be random at all. I loved the read, thought it was very well put together. He toyed with convention and it worked wonderfully. I thought it was a prime example of a writer knowing his art very well and pushing the boundaries of what was accepted.

Oh, in hindsight I completely agree, but not knowing anything about the novels, the Last Wish felt pretty random untill later in the book, once you get a bit of context though, yeah, quality shit.

I still think Andromeda is going to suck stinky baby nappies – its reached peak social justice, and history has shown us, if something is filled with too much social justice, it ends up sucking a hobo’s anus.
