This generation seems to be one of remasters and remakes. Neither of the new consoles includes backwards compatibility, making it nigh impossible to play older games from your library. Unless, that is, you purchase them anew for your shinier, newer machines. That, and the relative low cost and high reward of doing a remaster seem to be the impetus behind the myriad re-releases we’ve seen this generation. The latest game getting the remaster treatment? Arkane and Bethesda’s Dishonored.
Brazil’s now infamously leaky ratings board has let slip that Dishonored: Definitive Edition is coming. The rating itself tells us nothing, but given that Bethesda has already released a version of the game for last gen with all of the included DLC, it’s unlikely to be another PS3/Xbox 360 release. Instead, the somewhat open-ended sneak ‘em up is likely to be headed to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
I rather liked Dishonored – but with it being a pretty short experience, I have close to zero interest in replaying it – though it would probably be quite fun to tackle the missions in different ways.
I know many of you are sick and tired of these re-releases and remasters, and frankly, I am too. That said, they certainly have a place. For starters, nobody is ever forcing you to buy one of them – and they don’t make your older, legacy copies of the games go up in smoke. They’re also great for people who’ve jumped back in to videogaming, to catch up on some great games they’ve missed.
As their development is usually farmed out to a porting studio, they don’t tie up the studios that that love. Further to that, because they’re cheaper than making brand new games, and sell well enough to make a profit, they’re partly responsible for funding the new games that we’re waiting for.

I have played Dishonored at least 4 times and I would gladly buy a shinier version of it. Great game, with a decent enough story. But going back and redoing a mission in a totally different way is just as much fun, same as with the last Hitman.

I dunno man, I played a non violent ninja mode playthrough, and I could just not muster another playthrough, I just did not feel the need.
However, I really did enjoy the game to be honest. It’s just, I can’t find the will to play it again
Captain JJ Fantasticus

I replayed it twice. But I’ll buy a copy of Colonial Marines to burn in the fireplace before I waste money on a remaster of a barely-3 year old game.

Thank you Hammer!! And yes Fifa is just a new and shinier version every year with small tweaks here and there. And yes I do believe that EA can just release a 10 gig patch that will include the new tweaks instead of asking us to rebuy the game…. but I sure do love me some football, so I keep on buying it every year.

I’m still in two minds about console exclusives. Lots of people jumped from the 360 to the PS4 and vice versa (but not really) So lot’s of people got to play TLOU on PS4 for the first time.
ReaperOfSquirrels

That’s what’s gonna happen for me… I’m jumping from Xbox360 to PS4 (sometime in the next few months), and can’t wait for the games I just couldn’t play before, like TLOU.
I’m still trying to get my brother in law to let me use his PS3 for a while so I can play God of War.

I don’t mind remasters but I think they should offer a discount to people who own a copy of the original version.
Of course this would only work if the person owned the game on a specific account and would require some kind of digital rights management system or something.

NO! No no no no! STOP it!
If you want to remaster something, remaster something that’s actually old. Like Anachronox.
Not freaking Dishonoured. I mean honestly. This money grabbing is now reaching rediculous hights. Is this what gaming is going to be? 1 year of new releases and the next 5 years being remasters of said new games?
GAH!!!
Rock789
May 11, 2015 at 09:54
Wait, so what are Bethesda themselves actually doing? Yeah, Zenimax owns all these developers and they are the ones churning out the ‘new’ games (like Wolfenstein, Doom, Elder Scrolls MMO nonsense, Dishonoured) under the ‘Bethesda’ logo, with some input from the Bethesda team.
But what are the bulk of Bethesda themselves, the actual team who developed Fallout 3 and Skyrim, etc., actually up to? That’s what fills me with hope that a new Fallout or, possibly, Elder Scrolls, are on the way. But, if anything, I think it’d be Fallout (yes, hope springs eternal!). Me thinks they’ve sent Elder Scrolls out to die with this MMO bs!
