A new Future Trunks saga kicks off in Dragon Ball Super this June

Dragon Ball sagas are pretty much easy to summarise: Threat appears, kicks ass and everyone trains up to vanquish. Easy. Thing is, that setup is still superb for telling different kids of stories with the exact same payoff. And out of all of them, I always loved the Future Trunks storyline. Like the first two Linkin Park albums, it was dark and experimental stuff.

The son of Vegeta, travelling back in time to stop a threat that had pretty much annihilated his timeline and killed off the greatest warriors that the world had ever seen. Absolutely fantastic stuff, with a prequel that would break your heart and an ending that came full circle for the time traveller. Outside of that saga, Future Trunks has rarely been seen, but he’ll be making a comeback in June this year.

That’s according to the official Dragon Ball Twitter page and Toei Animation, which revealed that a new Future Trunks saga would kick off on June 12 in the Dragon Ball Super series. The enemy this time? Goku himself, or an entity referred to as “Goku Black”. Here’s a sneak peek at the returning warrior:

This is what you have built a story inspired from the draft that we received from the editorial department,” Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama said on the Toei Animation website, which my Google Translate has hilariously deciphered.
