Square’s next-gen engine demo is indeed real-time

Hey! Remember that ridiculously impressive next-generation engine that Square showed off at E3? Yeah, the one with the dusty village , and the old bearded codger. It looked so damned good, that many doubted it possibly being real-time. Well, you can wipe that doubt right now.

In two short videos  (via Siliconera), Square’s shown that the engine is indeed running in real-time, by manipulating the scenes. In one of the videos, you can see on-the-fly changes to some pretty particle effects, and real-time manipulation of facial hair. It’s obviously running on a high-spec Pc right now, but if this is the sort of thing we can expect from the next console generation, consider me excited. I just hope Square actually licences this sucker out though – because it looks like it could give Cryengine 3 and Unreal Engine 4 a run for their money.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
