Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5’s day one patch is bigger than the game itself

THPS5ugh

I loved playing through the original Tony Hawk Games. Pulling off unbelievable, exaggerated versions of tricks I could never have managed to do because I have the co-ordination of a wet sponge while listening to angsty punk rock tunes was an unbelievable amount of fun.

Despite that, I’m not particularly excited for the return of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5. At some point in the Tony Hawk skating franchise, it all went off the deep end; with fake plastic peripherals clogging up the works, detracting from the pure arcade skating the old games offered. Too many gimmicks, not enough good gameplay – and the most furious competition in the genre, from the excellent, more realistic Skate games from EA put a nail in THPS’ coffin.

This newest one is very much trying to stoke the fires of nostalgia, even appending its title with a 5 – like it’s a return to those good old days. It seems, to me, that it’s going too far back. It’s all well and good that it plays like the old games – but does it have to look like one too?

I’m also a little wary of the game and its sudden, late art style change. Just weeks ago, fan feedback resulted in the game getting a more cel-shaded aesthetic. At this late stage, changes like that make me think the end product can only be a slap-dash mess of a game. It’s out today, and it seems that it is indeed a mess – because it has a day one patch.

Those are becoming standard, really. Just about every game that’s released is done so alongside a day one patch, so that’s barely news…but it’s very seldom that the patch is bigger than the game itself. According to The Games Cabin, that’s exactly the case with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5. The game’s pre-load itself clocks in at 4.6GB, which is unfathomably small for a PS4 game.

The Day one patch? 7.7GB. While all totalled, it’s still a reasonably small download for a new game, it all just adds to the pile of little details that make me worry about the game. It’s out in the US today. There are still no reviews – and there seems to be confirmation that one of THPS’s best features – split screen multiplayer – won’t be available in the game.

Hmmm.

7.7 GB “Patch” Yeah. Rather try and convince me that the Pope is not Catholic.

I don’t know how other people feel, but a day 1 patch is like holding up your hand and saying “My bad. We fucked up and are going to try to fix shit.”

    It just should not happen.

I long for the days when I remember getting Doom 2 and Phantasmagoria and it just worked.

I can confirm the game is dope. Soundtrack is great, the gameplay feels just like the older ones but much tighter and the grinding is so much better than it used to be. The levels feel great too. I have not had a chance to play with the create a park mode so I can’t say how good that is. The graphics are pretty decent, they could be better but who cares because the gameplay completely makes up for it. The graphics aren’t as bad as everyone makes them out to be. I’m also already playing and still downloading the patch and the game is working completely fine. So I have no idea what the patch is for.

I guess that’s normal. Anytime someone goes against the majority they’re a fanboy lol. All those people talking trash haven’t even had a chance to play. I have. Wait for reviews man.

I will. To be honest, my cynical side tends to emerge when a “patch” bigger than the game is released. But I would LOVE to hear your thoughts say, a few weeks from now?

There is one gripe that I have with the game though. Doing 180s while doing a trick on flat ground is much slower.

I’d say if you’re a fan of the old games and don’t need photo realistic graphics, then it would be a good buy. If you’re not into the arcade feel then I’d say no.

First, I’d like to say that I hate Day 1 patches. Games should be released fully functional and tested, developers and publishers should really stop chasing arbitrary deadlines.

Second, a Day 1 patch that is bigger than the initial Game installation isn’t a Patch. That’s called “we put the wrong version on the disk and now you need to fix our mistake by downloading a working version”. If they were clever they would at least update the Digital Download version so you can get the working version 1st time.

I hope people know that all these day 1 patches, always online, no more single player campaigns, is all about implementing DRM come next consoles.

Since Microsoft didn’t get it right, implement DRM for the Xbox One, more games with day 1 patches, larger sized day 1 patches, always online games, no single player games, ect. The gaming industry is sending a message. DRM is coming to consoles.

The gaming industry is conditioning the people to accept DRM. And if you look at how no1 gives a fuck about the offline gamer, nor do they acknowledge the offline gamer. On an online platform they will make it out like there are no offline gamers. But it’s around 50-50. The gaming industry is going to cut off 50% of it’s consumers to implement DRM on consoles and they going to blame pirates and second-hand market. And you will find that people will accept it because of pirates and send-hand market and will never acknowledge the lose of the offline gamer.

    Don’t Support DRM.

I didn’t say that aliens are behind DRM. Enslaving the human race through DRM.

No your talking about collusion industry wide, which seems abit far fetched. I would go more along the lines of that developers are cutting corners to decrease lead times on games because they know they can fix bugs day one. I dont think it has to do with conditioning people for DRM.

Just before the Xbox One was announced, a lot of people from the gaming industry spoke out against the second-hand market and pirates but more so second-hand markets. They were saying that the implementation of DRM on consoles would help them make more money.

If you going to focus on one thing and not look at all of it. Then tin foil hat it up. You will need it to get better internet speeds.

Adults who still play computer games are often those who have no ‘life’ and seek gratification and respect in the virtual world. Remember guys – coach potatoes don’t pick up chicks at the bar.
But don’t worry, we do that for you.
