Nintendo sees 3DS sales surge

You’d never imagine that sizeably substantial price cut would be met with a dramatic increase in sales (no?) but that’s exactly what’s happened. In the four days since Nintendo lopped 40% off of its Japanese 3DS price, the device has gone on to sell as many as 215,000 units.

The number makes it  is the system’s second highest weekly total, following its launch week sales of 371,326 units.  To date, the company has sold over 1.5 million 3DS in Japan, which isn’t a monumental amount – but hey, at least it’s doing considerably better than the Xbox 360.

It’s expected that the 3DS will see an even greater increase in momentum towards the end of the year, when flagship titles such as Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario Land 3D release. Nintendo’s previously cited a lack of killer Nintendo titles as a reason for the 3DS’ slipping popularity, so we’ll have to see if that’s indeed the reason, or if it’s down to other issues with the system, like its horribly poor battery life.
