What’s the core concept of a Splinter Cell game? Baysplosions? Nope, it’s stealth, and it’s something that fans feel is missing from from the upcoming Splinter Cell: Blacklist, after watching a trailer that was two minutes of explosive action porn. And of course, the fans were a little upset. Did they have a right to be? Possibly, but according to Ubisoft, it’s yet another kneejerk reaction to their product.

“Everyone can make kneejerk reactions to a vertical slice of the game that are really uninformed as to what the whole experience is like,” Blacklist director David Footman said to Eurogamer last week. “We really have to be patient as we roll out each item about the game.”

The proof is always going to be in the pudding. Talk is talk, and it is just all talk right now. We really need to get a demo out there, for people to see how you can ghost levels, to see the gameplay. It seems to be an overreaction because people are just seeing the ‘pow!’, the explosiveness.

Honestly, I can understand what Footman is saying here, as the game seems to be going for a more organic approach to gameplay that allows you to be stealthy or actioney. The real issue here, is with the marketing, as they’re selling a game with material that will appeal to those demographics with a taste for C4.

Likewise with that other Ubisoft title, Assassin’s Creed, which has more overzealous patriotism dipped in the shreds of torn and bloody redcoats than a crazed Mel Gibson let loose on a British Star Trek convention.

I’m not saying that Splinter Cell: Blacklist is all balls to the wall action, but it would be really nice to see some evidence of this core gameplay that made the franchise so popular, instead of a few giblets of sneaking around an explosion for once.
