Xbox One vs PS4–What we currently know

The PlayStation 4 was revealed to universal acclaim earlier this year with Microsoft revealing their contender to universal disdain last week. But is the reaction from the Internet over blown? How different are the two consoles if we compare the facts?

Well thanks to Ralph Cifra from designmodo we can now show you the facts in a nice infographic format.

It’s a long one so get that scroll wheel ready

So there you have it, they are both a lot closer than many would believe. However the crucial always on Internet and used game issues are still the real sticking point.

Thankfully Microsoft has revealed via twitter that it is listening to the feedback. If they do nothing but change the online requirement and used game fee’s then they’ll be back on an even footing which will be the best for the entire industry.

So we know less about the PS4 than we know about the Xbox one. Go make a hoo haa out of that gaming press. There is no BT support for the Xbox one. IGN took it off their page yesterday. Major Nelson also clarified last week that the used games policy is still yet to be finalised.

Sony: “I’ll have that CPU that MS is having”
M$: “I’ll go customise that CPU like a low-rider and bounce past PweeS4”

Turned out better for Sony that we know less at this point. …. we can dispute facts about hardware and fanboyism all we want, what it comes down to is fudging horrible PR. and MS’ reveal of One was a PR nightmare, one which they didn’t handle well. And besides the horrible PR, the clear lack of focus being put on gamers was also another wrong move. Like it or not, MS messed up big time dattebayo

Not sure that the XBone has a CPU advantage, since the PS4 rumors are saying it is almost 50% more powerful. RAM does make a big different. Also, we didnt really see alot of ACTUAL GAMES from the Xbox launch, and what we did see wasnt amazing. Compare that to the PS4 games we have seen, and its a one horse race man. Those PS4 games look AMA ZING.

I do agree though that we still dont know THAT much about the PS4. Remember that MS also said that the XBox would not need PERESISTENT INTERNET CONNECTION. And they were telling the truth, it only needs to be updated every 24 hours. Which is kind of evil, but they didnt technically lie. For all we know Sony could be doing the same thing. And after the whole EA deal with the WiiU, I dont think its too much of a stretch to see that Sony will probably be charging for used games as well.
Guess we will find out at E3. But for now, there is no doubt that MS are looking like the bad guys

All I know is that the gamer is no longer the main demographic for a VIDEO GAMING device.
I do not mind being left behind as there is nothing wrong with what we have now.

Now if only we spent all of this energy finding those golden oldies that slipped past our AAA fingers the last 6 years then we would not care for Generation 7.5 or should I say Generation Internet.

So when they announce that the 360 is now $99 at E3 I will buy another 2 360s to keep me busy for at least another decade while I try and find then finish the other 1000 titles that never got our deserved attention.

    WINNER 🙂

Alan Wake needs more love as it was the last single player exclusive because it had no love. I need Bayonetta 🙂

Yes, Enslaved is a pretty good game. I found it second hand and been playing it. Gameplay is a bit generic but the story and characters are really good.

I just love stocking my cupboard with all these older goodies. If PS4 doesn’t allow used games or charges a fee then thats it for me with consoles. I will not buy a console that has DRM or some sort of block or extra charge for 2nd hand games.

I still cannot for the life of me understand why 2nd hand games are such a stickler for the publishers. Virtually every product has a 2nd hand market.

Why is it that most of the enjoyable games this gen all got around 6/10?
Another rule of thumb before sticking to this gen for another 10 years is to totally ignore Metacritic and play these things with an open mind.

Silent Hill:Downpour got krap reviews, but I loved the sh*t out of it….

YES, there is a risk but when we are talking 4-6 year old second hand games then the odd THOR THE THUNDER GOD game is just there to kill 2hours and will be cheaper than renting a DVD.

I will still play RE6, Silent Hill collection, Aliens and Star Trek when they drop to R49.

But games like The Saboteur that got the same reviews as Aliens NEEDS TO BE PLAYED by real gamers. I had more fun with that than GTAIV.

It all comes down to personal preference.

What we currently know, is that Microsoft shot itself in the foot with online DRM, If an Xbox game can not play on any Xbox, then what is the point of owning a Xbox, are we buying a gaming console or just an Xbox live profile?

What else do we know, Microsoft shot itself in the other foot with mandatory camera and mic. EA is going to love this!

What we currently know, Microsoft on its knees at E3 begging with games (Call of Duty). Too late i say, but thank you for the controller, it will go nicely with the PC.

What we currently know, PS4 = DDR5 ram. Xbox One DDR3, lol.

I hope Sony is making a gaming console that can play any game whether it’s new, used, borrowed, rented, used gift. DDR5 and no DRM for the win.

Any tech head in the world will tell you DDR5 ram are streets better than DDR3. DDR5 is a lot faster, which will result in smoother framerates etc. And your claim that you’ll prefer smarter AI, sure…we all would, but the chances are 0% that developers would develop different AI mechanics for the same game on different platforms…not going to happen.

Maybe so, fact is that the AI and back end mechanics of the games will be the same. Developers don’t have the time or money to develop different AI systems for different machines on the same game.

The DDR5 Ram is very much graphics orientated as you mentioned…which will result in smoother frame rates, slightly better graphics (except exclusives will be much better) and better resolutions.

Sony made the right choice if you ask me.

          • Lord Chaos

            May 29, 2013 at 08:54

On theory yes, the transfer rate is double, but when put into practice the difference is negligible. The GPU on both will be at least 2GB of DDR 5 anyway.

          • HvR

            May 29, 2013 at 09:13

Nope, Sony definitely said that the 8GB GDDR5 is for both CPU and GPU (a hybrid design) since the only thing MS mentioned around the GPU design is a monstrous 32MB on chip SRAM they might be using the DDR3 as GPU RAM as well.

I think we are seeing 2 ways to skin a cat.

MS went with cheaper memory with custom silicon (I think they increased lower level caches on their CPU and GPU to counter slower DDR3 but use the very low latency of )

Sony went with standard silicone (they have learnt a lesson with underutilized 8 core CPU of the PS3) on the GPU and CPU with faster GDDR5 ram, they probably counter the high latency of GDDR5 with a lot more parallel buses.

In the end you will see 2 consoles with very similar processing capabilities but Sony might have the edge on long term costing since GDDR5 will decrease in price and MS have to carry the multi billion dollar bill for their custom silicone. Basically a year or so after release I think the PS4 will be $50 cheaper than the Xbox One.

That would be great. I play most of my games on PC, but certain types of games (MK, Darksiders and so forth) are just more fun on console.

            May 29, 2013 at 11:34

In the old days (when I still worked with hardware) the bus speed mattered a lot, i.e. how fast the connection between the RAM, CPU, GPU and et al is.

Xeon (server) chips from Intel in year 2000 had large amounts of cache on the CPU itself, so could handle more calcs and so forth before needing to swap out. Wonder is MS is thinking the same type of thing?

Of course, none of this could be valid, cause now an engineer designs something for me with a 16bit 8Mhz CPU, that seems awesome!

        • Your Boss

          May 29, 2013 at 08:44

          to add…

The ios of the xbox is using 3Gb Ram…compared to PS4’s 1Gb Ram….that basically stacks it Xbox One 5Gb DDR3 ram compared to PS4’s 7Gb DDR5 ram.

The focus of the Xbox One is multimedia, and an entertainment system…which in my opinion is the same mistake PS3 made at the start. Once PS3’s marketing campaign focused on games they started selling it much better. If you go by the polls on major sites like IGN and Gamespot then Xbox is in for one rough ride.

All will be revealed at E3 though, the price difference can make one hell of a difference. And I’m pretty sure PS4 will have some kind of DRM system in place.

The comparison highlights how much M$ focused on highlighting their console vs $ony who highlighted their new games and shared very little about the actual console.
$ony have always had the hardcore singleplayer market and presented what they knew they wanted to see whereas M$’s mutimedia focus has come to fore in a big way.

As a Steam user, game collector and being online 24/7, the proposed “always on-line” and tying games to a console aren’t exactly deal breakers for me. You can’t sell your digital purchases whether from Steam, Live! or PS Store currently (that I’m aware of).

I am also a PC gamer, and yes, we deal with ‘Always Online” all the time. But thats what made consoles an option in the past. You didnt need to Always be connected, and you could ACTUALLY SELL used games. Be honest, how many hard copies of games are sitting at your place now that you want to sell? I have about 10 – 12 games I want to sell, but cant because they are under my accounts on PC.
If Sony and Xbox BOTH go in the DRM/Priced used games option, I think PC might just be the place to stay. Besides, we ARE the master race, are we not?

It is not that the xbox one is a bad console, it is just that it is not geared for the South African Market. Also they are confusing everyone with their statements and what they have confirmed does anger a lot of people. I just feel bad for South Africans buying the xbox one and not being able to use any of the features other than base gaming without even voice commands. One of my friends wants to buy it and hopes that the kinect voice commands and tv integration does work from launch. I have warned him that it might take years before it works if ever. Unlike MS that locks comments on all XboxOne videos on Youtube, difference is that they’re (Sony) directly speaking to the fanbase now.

Why would they give a solid answer for MS to make retroactive moves on? With the way Sony responded it doesn’t tell the competition (M$) anything. I think it was both smart to respond but also strategic by not saying anything that would help MS make adjustments to all the back lash that they have received.

MS will probably go forward with all their draconian DRM plans not knowing for certain if Sony will follow suit…They will probably use this as leverage going forward into E3.

But let’s see what happens. Shit’s getting interesting..

Did MS not do this with the Xbox 360 release?

I seem to recall they kept more details a secret before actual public product release than now.

Even a donkey learns after enough time, effort and electric shocks.

Look at me, I now know not to let my pregnant wife (love you) smell ANYthing before I finish cooking it. Took about two months of cooking twice on an evening, but I have got that message now.

P.S, at least my wife took it easy on the electric shocks

Hahaha! When you said wife, after shocks, I was, well, shocked at where you were headed… Does she have to stand outside while you cook, or do you have a special room with a hermetic seal on?

            I wish!

Nah she sits in the TV room, right next to the kitchen, in order to make my cooking life a bit trickier

I am still struggeling to say the right things to my pregnant wife. She is very touchy. I will eventually learn the lesson to just shut up and smile. Maybe Microsoft can learn that lesson. Dont comment on something you do not know the answer to.

Good luck man. I’ll still struggling to find a wife to make pregnant so that I don’t know what to say to so I can say ‘SNAP, ME TOO’… Though all the effort I would have to go through to say that may be a bit much…

Well, good luck man. This my first.

Lucky for me my wife can get difficult when sick, tired or hungry, so I am sort of used to the mood swings.

I read somewhere that Sony is planning that their E3 is going to be 5 hours long. If that is true, Sony’s E3 might be exactly what they need to finally blow the Xbox one away. I also saw that Microsoft is only planning a three and a half hour conference. I do not think this is enough time to properly show the other features of the console or their 15 exclusive games unless it was prerendered images or videos.

One thing I like about the PS4 is the RCA, a very under appreciated feature. Where you go on holiday there will be an old CRT tv available. So it is nice to chuck a few movies of the PS4 HD and take a few family oriented less graphic intensive games along for evening entertainment.

So the playstation could be a complete dud, in other words. Judging by the vitriol hurled at MS, most of which Sony has not commented on at all.
