Will DSTV work properly though the Xbox One?

Totally gonna puke

One of the shining features of the Xbox One from Microsoft is how you can integrate your satellite or cable TV signal into the box so that you can control your TV through the Xbox One with voice commands and be able to play games while having the cricket snapped on the right hand side.

So far the reports from America have been fantastic about this service but this morning there are few complaints coming up about it’s usability once you leave the American continent.

In the UK and Europe, much like here in South Africa, the standard TV signal is PAL at 50Mhz while in the US it is NTSC and 60Hz. This doesn’t normally matter anymore as we all go through digital set top boxes which should nullify the issue.

However according to users of the Sky set top box when the signal is pushed through the Xbox One it results in some juddering

The score ticker was juddery during Soccer Saturday, and Spanish football was dropping frames when the camera was panning.

Again this is thankfully something that should be able to be patched with relative ease but it does once again point to Microsoft simply not thinking outside of America when developing the Xbox One.

By the time the device is released here this will hopefully be resolved and I know that Microsoft SA has had some high level talks with DSTV already so expect our satellite providers to fully support and possibly distribute the Xbox One in the near future.

Multichoice can’t even keep their own service from going screwy every now and then!! So how will they cope with the extra XbOnE problems???? Please don’t let them distribute it, just make the service available and stand back and let someone else handle the customer care side!!

DSTV doesn’t even work properly through their own decoder directly connected to the TV.

Maybe the new Explora decoder but that is another R2.5k to drop just to watch an already overpriced service.

I must say, this is Probably one of the main reasons I would rather go with a PS4, If I was in America and had all the functions it was designed for, I would probably get an Xbox. However, I feel PS4 is just the better choice for anyone outside of America.

Well, I am cancelling my DSTV subscription this month in any case. Would rather spend the R700 on extra LTE cap, or a new game each month, or strippers, or put it in my holiday fund. So this feature means nothing to me. On a side note, that “seamless switching between game and video” nonsense – I finally have see the use for it now that my Xbox is streaming video from my PC 😛

I cancelled my DSTV and upgraded my internet line. Best decision ever. The only thing I miss about DSTV is the live sport. But now I have an excuse to head over to the local pub and watch the games with real people. Or hit up the stadiums for the local games.

It’s really not worth the price, IMO.

I only have it for the live sport. Got it for the 2007 World Cups. Now, it is gone. And as you say, more pubs and more Loftus or Supersport Park!

I don’t even have an aerial for my tv. There’s no point. I have it for DVD/Blu Ray and for the Eggsbawks.

Also, nothing better than sitting at the pub for a game, that energy is electric. 😀
