Right…so in a another year of blockbuster game sales, what would you imagine the best selling title (so far!) would be? No prizes for guessing FIFA, which has rapidly become this year’s best selling title – as well as the best launch of any sports game, ever.
It topped the sales charts in at least 40 countries; though local sales are generally kept pretty closely guarded, it’s probably safe to say South Africa was one of them.
The Sunday following the games launch, 30th September, was the busiest EA’s online servers have ever had, with 800,000 people playing FIFA 13 online simultaneously. EA says more than 66 million online FIFA sessions have already been played.
"FIFA Soccer 13 is a critical and commercial success unprecedented in sports entertainment," EA Sports boss Andrew Wilson said.
"Every minute of every day millions of fans around the world are experiencing what the critics have already said – FIFA Soccer 13 is the biggest and best sports game we have ever created."
Best selling game of the year? That’s a neat record, and not a terrible retail performance for something that’s essentially last year’s game with a fresh coat of paint and some iterative tweaks. It is, however, a record the title probably won’t hold on to for too long; Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Halo 4 are both being released next month.
Impressive sales numbers. I wonder if this means we’ll be getting a sequel?
