Nosgoth

I love the Legacy of Kain universe, especially when it branched off in to Soul Reaver – so it’s quite natural that I was excited for a new entry. Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun was meant to be a primarily single player, story-based game in the series, but Square-Enix in its infinite wisdom canned the thing.

Then, to make things even worse, they salvaged the game’s multiplayer-component  and decided it would be wise to turn that in to a free-to-play online multiplayer game. That game, Nosgoth, is now in closed alpha – so just a select few have been granted access to the online war between vampires and humans.

Nosgoth pits humans, who use a series of ranged weapons, against vampires, who need to get in for a close kill in team-based PvP combat. Both factions will feature multiple classes, each with its unique powers and abilities. Naturally, all of this can be upgraded and customised as players progress and level up. And because it’s free to play, you’ll probably be able to buy all of the good stuff thanks to the magic of microtransactions.

Square Enix, however, insists it won’t be a “pay to win,’" saying that "player skill and teamwork are the sole factors for success or failure." If you’re keen to join the test, you can sign up here. Honestly though, I think Square-Enix is just pissing away the goodwill of a great franchise.

Usual Legacy of Kain developer Crystal Dynamix have had nothing to do with this game, with work instead being undertaken by Psyonix Games, a bunch of Unreal developers who’ve helped on games like Bulletstorm, Homefront, Gears of War, Mass Effect 3 and Unreal Tournament III.

Here’s a look at Nosgoth’s trailer:

No word on release platforms other than Pc, or date.

I have zero Effing interest in this……Why would SE do this??Defiance ended with an impeding war that sounded like it was going to be incredibly epic….Hell, even reboot the series and keep Raziel alive….Can’t handle this….One of the most awesome series’ got turned into an F2P MP game……..

Lemme listen to Raziel’s theme to keep me from going mental

One of the freaking best games on PS1, seriously it was revolutionary imo. On ps1? This game did some mind blowing things. no loading times, great graphics and gameplay, terrain shifting…freaking hell. Full voice acting this game had it ALL

I loved how it continued on the PS2 and eventually culminated in a final game with Cain and Raziel together.

Yeah, I remember how lost I felt I felt after finishing Soul Reaver. Then played 2 and went back in time, was sooooo amazeballs. The ending of defience left me feeling a bit sad though, I really liked Raziel, but the series is about Kain though

Dude, the same here. Freaking LOVE LOVE this theme. Waking up after being thrown into the abyss and walking out into the ravaged world that changed since your demise and then being hit with this theme….Fuck….Perfection

Why create a product that you sell and never see a dime again. They are turning games into a goose that lays golden eggs. SP games are gonna slowly die. If all the gaming companies stop making SP games what choice do we have.

Look at the F2P games currently on the PS4 Blacklight,War Thunder and Warframe. Even Titanfall and Killer Instinct follows the same model on XBOX.

It’s so sad. I never in a million years would’ve guessed Blood Omen would turn out this way

Scary part? Why the fuck would they still bother with FF? Executives might as well pull the lug on that series.

You know what’s sad. I would rather have them can FF and reboot/continue Soul Reaver . FF is soulless. I would trade that game for a new Soul Reaver any day of the week

Curse you! When I read Nosgoth, I honestly, just for a brief second, thought they maybe a new Soul Reaver Legacy of Kain coming. Still my favorite games to date. While I’m still definitely signing up for the beta of this to give it a try, I am deeply saddened that the actual game was canned 🙁
