Damn Xbox One, I’ve got to be honest, I’m liking this new direction of yours. First we get friendlier with gamers, now we get news that the console will be friendly to developers as well? Slow down son! Wait what’s that? There’s the potential for modding as well? I think I may have just out-gasped myself.
Following on from that dev kit news, Microsoft’s Major Nelson was quizzed on Reddit whether or not the Xbox One could support modding. "It’s up to developers to support that,"Nelson answered.
These are two very different things.
Notice how Nelson doesn’t exactly downplay that idea of modding. Some of the best games in recent history have come from mods, from Portal through to Hot Coffee. Wait, scratch that last one, that’ll get me lynched.
But as Nelson correctly points out, it’ll be up to developers in the end. And not every single developer is eager to let gamers tinker away with their code. Still, with these new announcements and policy changes, the Xbox One could be a remarkably open console.
Here’s hoping that someone at Microsoft sees the genius in encouraging this idea.

mods on consoles sure great idea but what happens when mods come out and have unforseen glitches and fuck your whole console up, consoles becoming more like pcs means are more prone to have same weaknesses. eg corrupt data and viruses from dodgy mods.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the mods are installed from within the game somehow or with something like Steam Workshop, which does all the work for you. Doubt you’ll be able to install them manually like us PC overlords had too because you’re not given access to your file system on console are you?

I am not a slave I once apon a time was only a pc gamer but then you see I couldnt keep affording to keep up with the upgrades so I left pc gaming and joined the console fan bois. Never looked back.

There is a lot those (I got 2 like the one in the picture from reps over year as “Christmas presents”) but they never really well. With the available power from USB ports they only go to about 35 degrees and they stop working within a fw months.
