The SXSW awards make more sense than the BAFTAs

Last week, I told you about the BAFTA awards which were simply BAFfling. This past weekend was SXSW and unlike its directionally dissimilar Hitchcock movie, its awards were much as you’d predict. There are still some oddities in the mix, but most of the games you’d expect to win grabbed the awards that they should have.

Here is the full list of winners:

  • Game of the Year: Dragon Age: Inquisition
  • Mobile Game of the Year: Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
  • Table Top Game of the Year: Star Realms
  • Excellence in Gameplay: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Excellence in Art: Child of Light
  • Excellence in Animation: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Excellence in Technical Achievement: Destiny
  • Excellence in Visual Achievement: Far Cry 4
  • Excellence in Narrative: The Wolf Among Us
  • Excellence in Design and Direction: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Excellence in SFX: Alien: Isolation
  • Excellence in Musical Score: Transistor
  • Excellence in Multiplayer: Super Smash Bros. Wii U
  • Excellence in Convergence: South Park: The Stick of Truth
  • Most Valuable Character: Ellie, The Last of Us: Left Behind
  • Most Valuable eSports Team: Cloud9
  • Most Valuable Online Channel: Rooster Teeth
  • Most Valuable Add-On Content: The Last of Us: Left Behind
  • Most Anticipated Crowdfunded Game: Star Citizen
  • Matthew Crump Cultural Innovation Award: This War of Mine
  • Gamer’s Voice Award: Speedrunners

While I would have thought Alien: Isolation would get more recognition, I can’t fault them with giving Transistor an award for musical score – that soundtrack is spot on brilliant. Shadow of Mordor did extremely well, and Dragon Age: Inquisition as Game of the Year makes a whole lot more sense than Destiny. Still, now that we’re three months into 2015, I hope we can officially stop talking about the best games of 2014 and focus on this year’s cool titles.

We can’t talk about this year’s games… because they’re all delayed.
