The PlayStation 4 isn’t replacing the PS3

The guy on the right

We all know the PlayStation 4 is being released later this year and I and many other gamers like me are chomping at the bit to replace the aging PlayStation 3 next to my TV with a brand spanking PlayStation 4. But apparently that isn’t what Sony wants us to do.

Robert Fisser, General Manager of Sony Middle East, had the following to say

PS4, an addition to the PS family, like PSP and PS Vita, will offer a completely new gaming experience

It’s no surprise to find out that Sony are planning on supporting the PlayStation 3 for a long time to come seeing that the PlayStation 2 is still available in stores today which is a testament to the longevity of the PlayStation brand that Microsoft is a long way from matching at this time.

However to say the PlayStation 4 will offer a completely different gaming experience is pushing it a bit far I think.

Both the PlayStation 4 and Next Xbox will offer an incremental improvement over this generation in my mind.

The PS4 is confirmed to release in at least one territory this holiday season but I do expect Sony to push for a simultaneous worldwide release.

So basically, they will make sure they can take our money from more than just one console. No suprises there. Wonder how much ‘support’ they will actually provide. My guess is less they are saying, since there are always a few launch issues when a new console joins the market.

Well it’s better than simply cutting the old product. Imagine what people would be screaming if they were forced to buy the new one to be able to play anything

        That takes me back.

Reminds me of those folks who owned xbox 1s…. man… they really supported that console once the xbox 360 arrived. It was almost as if the xbox 1 didn’t even exist. That’s actually something I want to see, will Microsoft support the xbox 360 once the NextKinectBox arrives?

They already did that in a way by taking away backwards compatibility. I doubt the PS4 will play PS3 games

Well, considering how vastly different the tech inside the PS4 is going to be I guess it’s not a stretch to state the experience is going to be vastly different. Just depends on a person’s point of view.

Oh and also… Hype Train! Choo Choo!

Ahhh I see reverse psychology. The last time out they’ve said get another job and buy our newest console. This time around they say it’s ok you can have both consoles we don’t mind.

I wish there was a way to hook the PS3 up to the PS4 and they work together.

They are completely right. The PS3, if you remember, is not a gaming machine. It is a media box, that just happens to also play games. The PS4 will be a gaming machine…

I love the way Sony keeps supporting their platforms after newer hardware arrives. Thank you Sony and thank you Kaz.

“I love the way Sony keeps supporting their platforms after newer hardware arrives. Thank you Sony and thank you Kaz.” << That will only lead to the cannibalization of future products….

Ps3 will feel sad and lonely next to my PS4. I will still fire it up now and then though.

Same here, I’ll also fire up the PS2 and PSone so that the PS4 can talk to its predecessors and see that I am a fair owner, who never mistreats his gaming consoles.

Sony will use the PS3 to cover an overlap for the PS4’s staggered launch globally.

I don’t really care.. When I get my PS4, my 160Gb PS3 slim will be sold along with a CRAPLOAD of games collected over years… I barely have time to play half the games availavle on PS3… So I really won’t don’t need a second console, and I don’t have space for it(My wife wanted this stunning TV stand that is absolutely useless). I just hope there’s at least 3 good titles I can buy at launch, than I’m happy!
