The new Xbox 360 dashboard gimps video playback

Videotape

How’s this for a surprising turn of events, apparently the new Xbox 360 Metro dashboard has a bug in that it negatively affects any video played on it.

Which is a bit of a kick in the face to Microsoft’s claim that the Xbox 360 is the best media device for under your TV.

This odd issue was first noticed by Digital Foundry who downloaded a pile of high definition screenshots then compiled them into a movie using Microsoft’s own WMV codec and played it back on an old NXE dashboard and the new Metro dashboard and there is a noticeable difference.

The video playback on the Metro dashboard has its colours washed out, using their own terms

The washed-out nature of the colour does indeed suggest that limited range RGB is kicking in, and while in most cases the effects could be seen as minor, the fact is that video compression artifacts are considerably more noticeable due to the error in decoding: macroblocking that would be otherwise be less apparent within darker colours is now more readily visible.

To be honest I have no idea what they are really saying apart from that it’s worse on the new dashboard and that’s inexcusable. Apparently Microsoft have been ignoring customer complaints about the issue but I have a feeling that’s about to change now that it’s hit the media.

Expect an update soon but for now Microsoft you should be hanging your head; you’re meant to make things better not worse.

Here’s a still shot of the issue on each dashboard, click on one and then scroll left and right to see the obvious issue.
