Dragonkeep

Remember in the older days of gaming, where you could unlock extra content by playing for it, not paying for it? From a gaming standpoint, that was fantastic. From a business standpoint, that was downright stupid. Hell, as the Joker once said, if you’re good at something never do it for free. We’ll most likely never ever see expansive content for free again in gaming. But these five pieces of DLC were worth the extra cash.

We’re talking DLC such as Red Dead Redemptions Undead Nightmare, Bioshock Infinite’s Burial At Sea and more in the video above. But great DLC is more than just extra story. Maybe an added viewpoint, or a twist on events that you’ve played through, can make all the difference. New tools, new ideas, that’s what DLC us supposed to be, building on what came before it and transforming it into an even better and sometimes, touching, experience.

So what’s your favourite piece of DLC, that you felt was worth the purchase?

  1. I’ve only bought the Skyrim DLC’s. Worth every penny though. (not that I can see what DLC’s are in the video)

Yes, the DLC for Skyirm, Oblivion et al are normally very big, like a free gift Expansion Pack from them to us, for a DLC price

Gotta agree. The Dawnguard DLC has so far impressed me. Have yet to try the DragonBorn DLC story though.

Dragonborn is my favourite of the bunch. Hearthfire is also nice for some cool crafting extras. But Dragonborn feels like a quarter added to the game. Pretty big.

Hmm I still think Artorias of the Abyss is one of the best DLC ever. Just for the way its implemented. You can happily buy the DLC and you will not know how to access it unless you pay attention to the game. LOVE it

Mass Effect 2, Shadow Broker. Made the game great in so many little ways.

Mass effect 3, the Citadel if only for the sheer size of the damn thing. And amusing, at times.

Borderlands 2, the Baddass one. That was super cool

Borderlands 2 had some pretty sweet DLC. I didn’t pay for it though. Got it in the GOTYE. I still have a thing against paying for DLC….

However, if I had to pay, BL2 DLC would be the only DLC I’ve ever seen that would be worth extra cash

As long as you’re doing all the side quests in the 2nd play through as well you hit it fairly easily, especially if you played the season pass missions on your 1st play through.

When it came out it was said to have about 60hrs of campaign, if you rush it.
And play through 2, if you continue after finishing the game is quite a bit more difficult.

After finishing the game a couple of times with various chars, 2nd time round is the best of the lot. 1st time is way too easy, 3rd time is ridiculous & you blow through ammo, but 2nd time is just right. Playing solo that is.

Brood Wars was an Expansion pack, Like “Frozen Throne” for Warcraft 3. or “Yuri’s Revenge” for Red Alert 2.

Basically, If It’s Good and pre 2006, it’s an Expansion, not DLC 🙂

Can’t believe Artorias of the Abyss isn’t on this list. The way it changed PvP (for better or for worse) and the way its story applied to the main game make it one of the best pieces of DLC I’ve ever played.

I found ‘Left Behind’ from The Last of Us to be an amazing addition to the core game. So many feels.

Best DLC’s for me was Borderlands series they added new areas new quests gameplay and more story those kind of DLC i don’t mind paying for anyday but that useless cosmetic crap that seem to come with every new game is rubbish that’s not worth a penny….

Not quite related to this article, but Payday 2 gets DLC every now and then. And you only have to pay for like every 3rd one that gets released. They support both vanilla players and those who buy every dlc equally. Or at least in my opinion, I have not bought any of the weapon DLC for instance, yet I’m still just as capable as the blokes who have.

Might also be worth mentioning that the new missions that come with a DLC, if you didn’t buy it, you can still play those missions. As long as someone who has bought them hosts the mission. Which is almost always the case.
