Star Wars: First Assault is a Battlefront 3 test, may not be released ever

I’m pretty sad as a Star Wars fan right now, thanks to the fact that the sublime Clone Wars series is at an end, while Star Wars 1313 happens to be frozen in Carbonite development hell right now. But it seems that all is not lost. For there is another…game out there. And it looks like the force is strong with it.

Appearing out of hyperspace in the XBLA outer rim system, Kotaku discovered via their sources that LucasArts was indeed working on a new downloadable FPS title. It’s an experimental game so far, and one that could beta-test the response for a proposed Battlefront 3.

Called Star Wars: First Assault, the game was supposedly due out in the American Spring this year, but thanks to a recent acquisition of the Star Wars galaxy by the house of mouse, those plans have been put on hold.

Playing as front line soldiers instead of Jedi for a change, the game would have supported 16-player matches across iconic terrain such as Tatooine and Bespin, possibly paving the way for a third Battlefront game, based on audience reception. But with Disney putting the brakes on various projects, that test game might not even release at all.

In fact, it was already meant to be in the hands of beta-testers, but that never materialised at all. Kotaku’s source said that, “Fans should tell Disney/Lucas loud and clear they don’t want shitty titles from random developers; they want games to be taken seriously, and they will only pay for quality. I believe that if Disney/Lucas lets LucasArts die, it means the death of Star Wars as a storied game franchise is right behind it.”

I’m inclined to agree with that source. Disney licensed games are notorious for being hollow shells of more popular works, a far cry from the days of addictive titles such as Duck Tales and the original Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion games.

Not that LucasArts is entirely blameless either, but just when things started looking up for that company, it seems that they’ve been relegated to the naughty chair while Disney decides what it wants to do with their new billion dollar franchise.

Personally, I’d kill Bothan spies for that Star Wars 1313, or a proper Force Unleashed sequel. Or just imagine a reboot of Republic Commando, one of my all-time faves.

Hell, at this rate I’d even take a Jar Jar Binks game…No, no I wouldn’t. But I’d take a George R Binks game!
