Square Enix to fix Remember Me by copying Walking Dead?

Life is Strange 1

I enjoyed Remember Me. It was an interesting premise with some cool aspects of gameplay that was ultimately flawed and disappointing. However, it really could have been awesome, and Square Enix might just be launching a new IP that will do what Remember Me should have. But are they doing the right thing?

Announced over on the Square Enix blog, a new game is coming that will combine some time-bending elements of Remember Me with the episodic story-telling of The Walking Dead. It even changes the narrative and gameplay depending on the choices that you make. Hmmm, have Square Enix employees been drinking the Telltale KoolAid? Here are some details about the premise of the game.

Max Caulfield has been absent from Arcadia Bay, Oregon for five years now. Upon returning home she discovers that Rachel Amber, a fellow senior at school, has disappeared under mysterious and rather uncomfortable circumstances. While trying to uncover the truth Max reunites with an old friend, Chloe, and makes a startling discovery: Max has the power to rewind time…

Thus begins the story for a game that everyone here at Square Enix has fallen in love with. I know I’ve mentioned this before, but Life is Strange is something entirely different – we’ve teamed up with DONTNOD Entertainment (the guys and girls behind ‘Remember Me’) and they’ve delivered some amazing stuff. Each and every texture in Life is Strange is a hand drawn work of art and every action enacts a butterfly effect – but with the power to rewind time, what would you change? And would it turn out to be a change for the better or worse?

I like the whole butterfly effect idea – every change would have an impact on the future and your desired changes might not have the desired outcomes. Remember Me certainly proved that they know how to deal with this mechanism; that aspect of the game was arguably the best part of the entire experience. However, I’m worried that this will just feel like a strange rip off… unless Square Enix can do it really right and innovate the genre. Here are some pretty screens to rub your eyeballs over.

Do you still have faith that Square Enix could pull this off, or does it seem like they’re just trying to jump on the episodic band wagon? Is it all a cheap ploy, or would you happily play a game about time travel if made by the makers of Remember Me with more support to make it a truly dynamic experience? I’m excited by the full cast of female leads, I’m just worried that Square Enix will drop the ball on this one and we’ll be stuck with yet another example of a game with female characters that doesn’t sell well.

Life is Strange will be coming to PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One via digital download. Apparently it will also be available here in Germany for journalists of Gamescom to get there eyes and hands on – if I can, I will certainly endeavour to do just that.

i liked Remember Me. Nothing brilliant, but a solid 7/10. The memory remix scenes were awesome, and the combat was ok. The create-a-combo thing was novel, and the setting was pretty cool. But the critics were mostly right, cool ideas that didn’t quite come together as well as it should have.

Hopefully this game will be better.

Remember Me was great, the story line was unique, the memory remixing was awesome my one and only critique was the combat system. If they changed that to something more fluid and a lot better that game would have been amazing. IMO.

Did you ever play the Wolverine game? It was sorta like that but very combo centric, as in, if you didn’t hit combos you would basically fail.

the story was great, the world was rich and detailed, awesome visuals and styling etc.
as a piece of design it was >>

but the game itself was simply bad.
i didnt understand the combat at all, the mixxing also felt clunky and rough and the handling etc felt so 2010.

Haven’t played Remember Me yet, sitting on my shelf and stuck into Red Dead, but OvG said he enjoyed it so I am sure I’ll have fun with it. This new game ‘Life is Strange’ could be a killer, cool.

I watched a friend playing Remember Me and it looked interesting but I know nothing about it so I can’t judge from that aspect.
Life Is Strange looks interesting, however I am worried that Square Enix will turn this into a flop.

    Time will tell.
