So really, how big is the Xbox One

By Gavin Mannion on Thursday, June 13, 2013

We’ve all seen pictures of the Xbox One and the jokes about it looking like a betamax or tank are all the rage. But it’s impossible to see how big something really is without a comparison and thanks to the guys at ElectronicTheatre we can now show you.

Quick note, we passed this image via Geoff and Darryn who have seen both devices first hand and have agreed that it is correct in principle.

console_comparison

So yeah it’s pretty big but not as gigantic as some of us thought while the PS4 is teeny.

I have to admit that the more I see of the Xbox One the more like the look of it… the games are also seriously intriguing and if it wasn’t for the DRM this war would be so much more exciting.

I'm cranky, arrogant and ever so amazingly annoying but when you get to know me you will also realise I'm honest and incredibly good at describing myself... now pass me that beer

  • Lardus

Ja, my biggest problem is the DRM. People don’t want to feel they are not in control. I liked the LG idea on how to solve it with a “go offline” mode where your shares etc stop working until you go online again. If they implemented that…then maybe.

  • ElimiNathan

    Its a tank!

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

      It’s a sinking battleship…

  • Rinceyouropinion

Other than the fact it looks like I could put five of them together and have a flat, tje fact it makes me have to spend an extra 700 a month on internet bills, the fact I can’t sell my games to mates who may also then want to give them away as gifts, the fact I’ll have Hal staring at my perfectly chizzeld arse as I walk around my home naked, it looks good…

    • Hammersteyn

The XBOX is a pretty machine. Along with its controller it’s very pleasing to look at. To bad it has a giant hairy mole (Kinect) that comes with it.

      • OneManRiot

        Moooollee… moly moly moly moly.

  • Trevor Davies

I think that two-tone look is ugly. A part of me thinks it would be very funny if the Xbox changed from two-tone black to two-tone khaki upon release in ZA.

    • Rinceyouropinion

As in from rust as it’ll take so long to get here? Trolol

      • Trevor Davies

Rust will work too. I was referring to the traditional two-tone khaki Afrikaner farm wear ;)

        • Rinceyouropinion

I are jean pant got that ;)

  • Lord Chaos

Same here, fell in love with the look.

Though as a PC gamer I can’t seem to feel bothered by the DRM, which makes the awesome exclusives all the more awesome.

    • DarthofZA

I’m with you on this one. The DRM issues truly don’t bother me. In the end my choice of the PS4 has come down to one thing, it is launching first. Even 3 years after the 360 came out and the PS3 was alive and kicking for a couple years (just not really hitting anything), 360 games were still dropping in price quicker. The larger install base made games cheaper for quite some time. I’m fairly sure that will happen again.

      • Brady miaau

But my steam allows to be offline for ages before I must call home to play a game.

        This is different.

        • Lord Chaos

Different yes, but my house and everything in it is permanently connected to the wifi, so everything is always on anyway.

I wholeheartedly agree it’s a bad business model and not everyone has internet, just personally I don’t have a problem with it.

        • DarthofZA

People say that, yet every now and then when I try launch Evil Genius, it won’t let me until I log into Steam again…

          • Argentil

I believe steam has a 7-Day checkin period depending on the game in question. Some games never need authentication.

          • Brady miaau

Perhaps it tied to the game and Steam?

Are all Steam games equal in terms of DRM requirements?

            I play Civ V mostly.

        • Brady miaau

I have a laptop that I hardly ever reboot. Perhaps that is why I get these long times between logins with Steam.

I just close the lid and move one, Laptop sleeps or hibernates or whatever.

      • Lord Chaos

I’m gonna wait till gen 2 anyway and then decide once all problems have been sorted.

        • DarthofZA

I’m going to be doing that as well… mainly because I have a wedding to pay for… but also because it is the wise thing to do.

        • Argentil

I’ve never before been so tempted to buy a console at launch as I am now with the PS4. I am trying to hold out at least a year after launch, but I may buckle. There is so much F2P content, Playstation Plus incentives, and a large launch library for both consoles. If there were any reason not to upgrade right away, it would be that most games are coming out on PC also, and the previous gen systems (PS3 in particular) are still releasing good games.

      • Argentil

As a PC gamer, my PC is hooked up to my internet connection, it’s my main browser, followed by my smartphone. There are times when my console is not hooked up, and other times when I travel with my console. I have a 4MB line, with wi-fi. I am abut 30% inconvenienced by the 24-hour checkins. It removes some of the portability and convenience that comes with using a console over a PC.

I am not the issue though. At least half of Microsoft’s current user base are not okay with being forced online. They either don’t have the means to connect to the internet (this is still really common) or it’s inconvenient to do so. This is the problem.

    • Jakster

And bigger is better ofcourse ;)

      • Harvey P. Cheesewinkle

According to the system specs, that’s not really accurate. PS4 has GDDR5, the GPU in the PS4 has 18 Compute Units (Xbox One has 12), PS4 has 176g/s memory bandwidth in a unified architecture. The Xbox One has 68g/s bandwidth between the CPU/GPU and RAM, the GPU has 102g/s bandwidth to the 32m SRAM cache, and another 30g/s bandwidth between it’s peripherals. So, the One’s bottlenecks are a bit more glaring than the PS4′s (of course, we’ll find out more about the more complex nature of the One’s architecture as time goes on and developers get further into coding for it). But, all in all, the PS4 has 1.84 TFlops of Shader calculations and the One has 1.2. To put that in perspective the 360 had 300 GFlops and the PS4 had 400. There is a very very clear difference in power between the two.

Here’s a chart that shows the comparable GPU’s performance across numerous titles.

    • Tbone187

What about the trading of used games…? with the prices of titles, I reckon that’s a huge downer…I’m also a PC gamer, and steam annoys me…

I’m not cool with mandatory updates and checks in light of the fact I paid for the game yet I need to bow to their requirements…Can’t count the amount of titles I’ve bought, only to dl a crack thereafter coz the drm was irritating to say the least….

I’ve got the ability to cater for online checks but that aint the point…You give MS an arm, they gonna take your whole upper torso…

      • Lord Chaos

I have not sold a single game, no matter how bad it was.

As with Steam, you can disable the update checks and still be able to play single player. I’ve done this with a few titles already.

If I believe a games DRM is too draconian, I simply just don’t buy it. SimShitty being a good example. Really looked forward to it, but refused to buy it because of the DRM.

        • Jakster

You are in LG land…no one talks sensibility here. Apparently this website doesn’t require an internet connection. It runs in a type of offline mode where pixies throw up news from the bowels off the USA.

          • Lord Chaos

I was just wondering why the laws of physics packed up and left the building…

        • Argentil

The constant comparisons to Steam are unfounded. Microsoft do not sell their games at 80% discount, nor do they have the sales and bundles steam offers.

    • DarthofZA

Wow, having an opinion that is no way could offend anyone still gets downvotes. The maturity of the comments on this site is rediculous… I really miss the lazygamer of 5 years ago..

      • Lord Chaos

Meh, they can downvote all they want. Can’t rule the world without making a few enemies.. :P

  • Brady miaau

Look, the size is not the important thing, really.

It is what it does and how it is used that counts.

The question to be asked is which of the two consoles provides the best experience, in an all round way, for your particular needs.

    I still wait and see.

    Pretty box

    • Jonah Cash

My particular need is for me to own wholly what I buy, and to be able to do with it whatever I want because I am the owner…. And that is all need apparently that will decide where my money goes this Gen, and that makes me sad….

      • Brady miaau

Do you buy E-books? I do.

It seems I do not own them either, but am allowed to read them. for now

        • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

I always strip the DRM of mine… I just can’t help it. There’s just something fundamentally wrong about imposing restrictions on me, even though I would rarely share my ebooks. The fact that an ebook has DRM, means I’ll go out to find a file to strip it off. Also, I don’t like to be confined to one platform, sometimes I want to read my books on my new android pad, sometimes I just want to use the ipad, and sometimes, like today, I have a desktop in front of me, with my books on a flashdrive.

          • Jakster

So if somebody gets hold off your flash drive, they’ve just used you and as a medium for “sharing”. That’s like downloading a game off Steam and then stripping it off it’s DRM. Interesting, this is. Caring, is sharing. Must be a banana culture since they hang so close.

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

If they removed my flashdrive, chucked it into their pocket and ran off with it, they would be stealing.

If they swipe my files without my knowledge, that wouldn’t be sharing either.

But if they asked to have a copy of a certain title, I would just stare at them, in my typical arrogant manner, corduroy jacket shinning in the light, tie slightly loosened, moustache well moistened….

My eyes fixated on theirs, and then I would mouth the following words in my posh Capetownian accent, “Do I look like a library to you?”

          • Brady miaau

            Yip.

Some books I buy are very niche market and I save many hundreds if I get the e-book. But I have not removed the DRM from mine. I have no idea where to start.

I bough a Kobo E-book reader, cause it works, is not a Kindle and it works. Does one job and does it well. On holiday I read about ten books, 7 of them in a sci-fi series at about 500 pages each. If I had to pack that in suitcase, well, that is unpleasant.

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

The wife has a Kobo and an iRiver, while they might not be as elegant as the kindle, they get the job done… but I still strip DRM off books. I’m just one of those weird rebel-types.

          • Brady miaau

May not be as elegant, but not a rip off price either THAT STILL WANTS TO PUT ADVERTS ON MY DEVICE, YES AMAZON I READ THE FINE PRINT

the kindle “without adverts” is actually less adverts, if you read carefully. Bastards

        • Jonah Cash

I know you will probably not believe this, but I own about 50 hard cover books. I have 4 book shelves in my main bedroom for all me and my wife’s books!! I love to read, but only things that is impossible (Harry Potter, Twilight Watch Trilogy, Game of Thrones and books like them)

          • Argentil

I prefer my books on page too. It’s a guilty pleasure not caring about all of the trees that were slaughtered to entertain me.

          • Jonah Cash

I love the feel of the pages in my hand, and I want to teach my daughter that there are other mediums other than electronics!! At least they make specific plantations just for paper, so that makes me feel a little better….

      • Argentil

Apple have started this wave of ‘licensing’ content. It’s not a good direction to be moving. Just because it’s working out, and convenient, for now, doesn’t mean it’s right. Imagine in the decades to come, when users start dying of old age, and their digital collections are supposed to die with them. It’s a horrible concept.

        • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

That’s definitely a problem. And the ownership never resorts back to the estate, it just vanishes, because content was “licensed”.

  • Jonah Cash

What exclusive are there on the Xbox One that I won’t get on 360 and or PS3/PS4? @Gavin is it possible to do a line up of the games and for what consoles they will be available. The only game I want that they have shown which I think is for jus the XBONE is Dead Rising 3…. and that is about it for me….

    • TiMsTeR1033

Deadrising 3 wont stay an exclusive for long… otherwise wait for dead rising 4 lol

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Capcom is insisting that they’re making use of the xbox one’s cloud, hence it HAS to be played on the xbone, which just sounds like technical bs to me. I didn’t believe EA when they spun a yarn about the cloud for SimCity and I certainly don’t believe MS and their magical cloud now.

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Apparently Crapcom is trying to target the Call of Duty kids with Dead Rising 3, which means the humour of the first two games will be replaced with mindless crap. :( I’m so disappointed right about now.

      • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

From my conversations with Geoff you are entirely wrong about this… he is blown away by how awesome Dead Rising 3 is

        • Argentil

Rev3Gamers were pretty negative about it, as were a few other outlets. It’s lost the goofy charm that defined in, in place of a more serious appeal. Tell Geoff to waltz down to the TLoU booth and tell us how it compares.

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

We’ll get there.. once the dust has settled

      • Jonah Cash

Thanks Gavin!! My mind is just on gaming, see my wife’s parents has been visiting for two weeks now and I have not been aloud anywhere near my consoles…. Going to lock myself in my house this weekend and just game!! Bought a Xbox 360 controller and Gears of War Judgment for just R399 at BT Games….

    • Argentil

Don’t forget PC. Titanfall is their biggest title, in my opinion, and that’s also coming out on PC (probably Windows 8 exclusively).

  • Hammersteyn

    Lies! It’s about this big.

    • DieJason

Looks like I need a bigger shelf for game boxes…

    • Double-O-Six and a half

seems like owning an XBone just got more expensive… I’m going to have go and buy a truck to bring the disks home if thats the size!!! IS BT going to have to open a warehouse for the disk collection…?

  • http://www.facebook.com/khulie.ndlovu Khulani Ndlovu

It’s just a VCR box, you know how it is just slot in a VHS tape & enjoy Predators, the PS4 is super slick, it will fit perfectly in my lounge no need to create some extra space, ;)

  • McDangerousZa

Jir, maar daai is ‘n laaaaang ding… ;D

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

      That’s what she said!

  • Ultimo_Cleric N7

Personally I like the PS4. Not a huge fan of the Xbox VCR look

    • Hammersteyn

      You called it.

      • Argentil

All the boxey appeal of the 90′s, without the satisfying, chunky buttons. I feel somewhat cheated.

  • ElimiNathan

My biggest problem isn’t even the DRM anymore, its the chaos and bad name caused for the Xbox One from all that has happened. And now I don’t want that filth in my house

  • ALKi1234

Blu-ray is sony tech if i’m right. So does that mean M$ has to pay SONY for every BR-drive they put in XBOXone?

    • Tbone187

I reckon conditions on the patent would have eased off a bit by now as it’s been around for a while…

    • Jakster

LG are the major patent holders. They can revoke the license whenever they feel like it.

      *T’s & C’s apply…

    • e1ace

Since Sony are part of the Blu Ray Assoc. then yes. But there are tons of patents involved in consoles and MS will be getting a piece of the PS4 pie as well.

Microsoft make more money than Google for every hardware sale of an android device.

  • Daryl Eksteen

    PS4 wins another round ;)

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Is that a bronze comrades medal?

      • Daryl Eksteen

Yeah, ran my first comrades this year. You run?

        • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Wow! Congrats Daryl! I sadly don’t run, although I’ve been known to be quite quick during a short… dash…

So how was your first comrades? Is it as tough as they say?

          • Daryl Eksteen

            Thanks a lot Jim!

Yeah, it was without a doubt the toughest thing I have even completed in my life. I had ITB problems with my right leg from the 25 km mark so it was a long long tough day.But I think people should give it a go at least once in their lives, it’s something you can’t really explain but have to experience.

  • http://lazygamer.net/ OVG

    THIS BIG

  • Nix

Personally I can live with both consoles in terms of looks. But I like the size of the PS4. With a setup running monitors, PC, PS3, Dstv, networking equipment etc, the more compact and efficient the device size is the better for me. Looks like PS4 is give and take same size as PS3 slim?

  • http://lazygamer.net/ OVG

DAFUQ???? HOW DO FIT 2 PS4s INTO A FAT XBOX360 WHEN IT IS……….16X more powerful.

  • Argentil
  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Holy crap that thing is MASSIVE! You can kill a man..

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Clearly when they designed the xbox one, they took inspiration from the Titanic!

    • Jakster

Being a phallic being, you should no bigger is better. More is more!

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

        That’s what she said! :P

  • George

Why is the PS3 picture a mirror image?

  • Argentil

    https://twitter.com/VirtuaMe/status/345094940881219585/photo/1

This image sums up why I LOVE the PS4 design.

  • TiMsTeR1033

Ps4 looks the best out them all too! well thats just my 5 cents.

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

The xbone reminds me of the monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Sadly this time round the gaming monkeys are not worshipping it, we’re throwing our faeces at it.

  • Avatar Roku

Very deceptive photo, that is not the longest side of the PS4.

    • Argentil

It’s a square… This is the longest side.

  • Cailian82

I must say, i have always been a huge fan of Xbox but this whole DRM rubbish is seriously making me rethink my allegiance. If they don’t come up with something amazing soon then i will be a PS4 fan from this year on.

  • http://www.facebook.com/panthisza Alex [SS] PsyChoPanthis

i actually like the fact that MS cocked it up with the one… because if the two were on par id be in real pickle about which console id want and ultimately i would end up with both relatively soon after launch and id be a lot poorer because of it. now however i know exactly which console im getting, not just because of the MONUMENTAL cock up on MS’ part, but because the console i was originally rooting for has, so far, come out on top.
