Resident Evil HD Remaster shatters digital records

Resident evil remake

It’s been a mere three weeks since Resident Evil was re-released for modern gamers. With a shiny coat of paint and the glory of nostalgia, Resent Evil HD Remaster was sure to do well. But it has done even better than expected.

Capcom has announced that Resident Evil HD Remaster has become its fastest-selling digital title in history, across North America and Europe. Beyond breaking their record (which doesn’t really mean too much in my book), they also broke a PSN record – Resident Evil now holds the title of biggest-selling day one digital title on PSN. In the statement released, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said:

It’s been great to see so many positive comments from fans that have enjoyed this new release. The team here at Capcom Japan have worked hard to bring the game to the latest generation of consoles and we are thrilled at this news on its performance.

Breaking the PSN record is quite something, even if it’s probably because the release coincided with the PSN “we’re sorry for always being down” sale. I wonder if this shows the power of the franchise, or if other anticipated remakes will have similar success. The first Resident Evil isn’t even the best one – we all know that it’s the second iteration in the franchise that was the real winner.

The game received tons of high scores and is giving hope for even more classics to be remastered for a modern audience. I am glad that a variety of games will be making a comeback – they often need quite a bit of loving to be playable for modern gamers. Who needs backwards compatibility when we get remasters and HD remakes instead? Welcome to the future, it’s retro.

So…You’re telling me people still love survival horror?…Well what do you know. This game is fucking amazing, I’ve been having a blast playing this. Almost done with Jill, in the Lab section now going to meetup with my homboi, Tyrant. TRYAAHHHNT. The design of this game is excellent, I hope…I HOPE and pray Capcom learns from this and realize what it is that fans REALLY want from the series.

I’ll say it again, Capcom needs to dig even deeper. There are even more classic titles that they can use.

Hopefully this teaches them how a Resident Evil game SHOULD be. Not some flashy run and gun action fest with QTE out of the ass every 5 minutes.

Got it. And it’s awesome!! So much winning! 🙂 Funny how the 2 best Resident Evil games in the last, what, 10 years, are a remake of the original and a game that followed the formula of the original (Resident Evil: Revelations)… Maybe Capcom will learn what this means and, finally, what RE fans are asking for!

“I wonder if this shows the power of the franchise, or if other anticipated remakes will have similar success” Actually it shows that if there’s nothing good on PSN, anything will sell well! Drivedud and K(n)ack also proved this! ????
