SEGA has announced the release date for Total War: Rome II,  aiming to set a new quality benchmark for strategy gaming.  And perhaps capitalize on the Game of Thrones trend… you know, men with uniforms and fur.

Ah, Rome.  All roads led there; it was the center of the world for a while. The first superpower, with the best weapons, technology and culture at the time.  Now, you get to take over the world as Rome… again.  Using military, economic and political means, dominate your enemies and spread your empire.  But only on PC, as usual.  The game will become available in September – here in SA you can pre-purchase via Steam, or pre-order through your preferred retail outlet.

Features include:

Plan your conquest of the known world in a massive sandbox turn-based campaign mode (supporting additional 2-player cooperative & competitive modes). Conspiracies, politics, intrigue, revolts, loyalty, honour, ambition, betrayal. Your decisions will write your own story.

Build vast armies and take to the battlefield in real-time combat mode. Put your tactical skills to the test as you directly control tens of thousands of men clashing in epic land and sea battles.

Play for the glory of Rome as one of three families or take command of a huge variety of rival civilisations – each offers a notably different form of gameplay experience with hundreds of unique units from siege engines and heavy cavalry to steel-plated legionaries and barbarian berserkers.

See exotic ancient cities and colossal armies rendered in incredible detail, as jaw-dropping battles unfold. Detailed camera perspectives allow you to see your men shout in victory or scream in pain on the frontline, while a new tactical cam allows a god’s eye view of the carnage to better inform your strategic decisions.

Extremely scalable experience, with gameplay and graphics performance optimised to match low and high-end hardware alike.

With the pre-purchase, you get the Greek States Culture Pack, including three new playable factions for single or multiplayer campaign modes, as well as custom and multiplayer battles.  The collector’s edition will include a functional replica onager for your building/modeling pleasure and a classic Roman board game – might have to buy it just for that!

Total War is one of those franchises that is always impressive – great graphics, fantastic game play, and generally awesome gaming experience.  The original won plenty of awards in 2004 when it came out; it will be interesting to see if this iteration a decade later still has the power, and the glory.

This is the most eagerly awaited gaming title in the universe, as far as I’m concerned. Going. To. Be. Perfect. The battle of Teutoburg Forest already looks so amazing. Rolling balls of FIRE?! Yes please. Naval and terrestrial wars simultaneously? Yes please. 40 discrete units to dismember in exciting and new ways? Yes please. A campaign map three times the size of the original Rome? Yes, for the love of the gods, please. Goodbye life.

Too big a campaign map can drag out a bit, I fear.

      But yes, bring it on

I love it when a game contains revolts, if only so I can shout about revolting peasants.

No revolting peasants or gladiators this time around, I’m afraid. They removed the ‘rebel’ system and have replaced it with original (albeit smaller) tribal factions. So ‘Gaul’ is now represented by the various tribes of the times. Going to miss crushing those peasants though…

At least original cultural groups can still revolt when they’ve been conquered though.

I still play Ome : Otal Ar sometimes, it is just awesome, truly awesome.

Also loved seeing the history channel use the game to explain concepts or just to give some visuals to voiceovers.

I did not like other total war games nearly as much and I have one word for that

    CENTURION

Now that was a game and Rome Total War feels, to me anyway, like the spiritual successor to that game. And I figure that these folk know about making great games (even the ones I did not like, it was because I did not care the period in History, not the game)
