Microsoft admits to Xbox One hardware failures

As we mentioned last week when the PS4 failures started rolling in, these initial failures are to be expected since all high tech device has a certain failure rate. What’s important however is how many of the consoles are failing.

Well it’s still early days for both contenders but at the moment it appears that the PlayStation 4’s failure rate is settled sub 1% and we all have to admit that we were going to look closer at the Xbox One failures due to them totally screwing up the Xbox 360’s first batch.

Well today Microsoft has admitted what we reported on earlier and that is that the Xbox One is suffering from a optical drive issue where the drive is making a really loud noise and not accepting disks.

According to Microsoft

“The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers. We’re working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange program. Rest assured, we are taking care of our customers.”

However according to Kotaku, who finally posted gaming news again, the problem feels more widespread. When the PS4 failures started they received a few dozen emails from readers. However this time around that count has topped 150. Again people are paying closer attention so this could be a result of that… or has Microsoft dropped the ball again?

I wonder if the guys and girls with a Day One Xbox get a Day One Xbox as their replacement?

I'm cranky, arrogant and ever so amazingly annoying but when you get to know me you will also realise I'm honest and incredibly good at describing myself... now pass me that beer

  • A 2 Brute?

Golf Clap to Microsoft.. If it is that they dropped the ball again, then they are just making their fanbase that much smaller with product reliability being a question a week after (what is meant to last a couple years) release.

    • psyrakan

      : so
you really think the million customers for the xbox one worldwide was on kotaku and report only
150 of us have failure common man i dont think it’s a big % but it’s
bigger than sony 0.4% otherwise microsoft will came out and said it’s like .0.2 % as you can see it’s less then sony

      • A 2 Brute?

Read my comment again my good man, I did say the word IF… I’m well aware that a few doesn’t represent the many. But seeing as though MS has had a history with console failures, I am just saying that I hope for their sakes that this is an isolated problem, and not a global one.

    • Gekko36

Thats the exact same for Sony. Both systems have failures both are working to put them right.

Only Sony and Microsoft know the numbers not you, not me and most certainly not the online gaming toilet.. sorry “media”.

All you can do is put your finger in the air and comment on guess work.

However with failure rate it’s nice to know both Microsoft and Sony are working with customers to help them.

Commenting on anything else in this “Story” is pointless right now

  • Martin du preez

150 cases reported from over a million consoles sold? Really? Good God internet calm down

    • Admiral Chief Duke

      Heh, upvote to you

    • Hammersteyn

Hopefully it ends with 150. Nothing worse then buying a broken console/

      • frikkenator

Yea. To this day I can’t get myself to buy anything from BT after they sold me a used, broken 360 as new, 6 years ago. Really is a shitty feeling spending so much money on your first console and ending up disappointed.

        • ALKi1234

          Amen.

        • Hammersteyn

Wow on the flip side I’ve only had stellar service from them since they opened in my town. Normally there is the odd one that gets bad service but I cant fault them for anything the three years I’ve supported them.

          • frikkenator

Yea I know a lot of people who love them, but my point being first impressions are lasting.

          • Hammersteyn

            That’s very true.

    • FoxOneZA

Stop patronizing Xbox One you Wii U fanboi :P

      • Martin du preez

        SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH! :p

  • Pieter Kruger

WOW, MS is sending replacement units upfront and offering a free MS launch game to effected people! Excellent Customer Service! Meanwhile back on PSN Sony is still resetting “a few” European and US passwords as a “precautionary” measure again……….????

    • Hammersteyn

You know what’s funny. After I get my PS4 I am getting a VITA and then I can get free games on three different platforms just for paying less than R500 a year for PS+ and not dusty old games from 2007. Resogun is free for PS4 members. Sure Sony has had issues but they are really backing the gamer.

      • Fweds

For the record you are going to get INDIE games on PSN (though I can see Knack joining them) not up to date full retail games and it will be on a one indie game change a month basis.
MS have also announced they will be doing Games for Gold for the Xbox One in the new year and as there are NO old games things are going to be much more competitive with what they offer.

And NO they wasn’t free on PSN, you paid a sub if you stopped paying they simply switched them off, with Xbox they were and still are yours to Keep.

        • t-wholf

only someone that hasnt used PS plus would try and argue against it…. Doesnt matter what console you support, if u cannot admit it your comments just really lose credibility.

The fantastic thing about PS Plus is it allows you to play games that wasnt your 1st choice at the time. It reminds you of great games that you wouldve forgotten about. Everyone wants to play the latest most talked about games, however just because a game is a bit older doesnt make it worse and in alot of cases is actually better.

and yes PS PLUS does include AAA games and Indie games, but condescendingly you imply that Indie games are shit?? I dont get that, some of the best games I have played are Indie ( They are the only ones with true creative freedom).

Anyway PS PLUS is a great service and I couldnt vouch for it more. Use it, dont use it, meh

          • Fweds

No we were talking about the ps4 version and i pointed out they will be indie games as they have already said and as I said MS is also doing it this time so they will be on a level playing ground and it’s clearly obvious MS have the capability to match Sony.
They already caught Sony offguard when they announced the PS4 and not thinking MS had software ready when in fact they did and had more AAA titles.
And yes to be honest I do find indie games sh*t they are ok for a short time and that’s it

          • Hammersteyn

I guess we will see. O is Drive Club an indie game? That’s definitely coming to PS+

          • Jason M

WOOHOO Go XBox!! PS4 games actually have a higher consumer rating.

            Forza 5 5.0 < Ryse 5.4 Dead Rising 5.9 < Knack 6.6 <killzone 7.2

    • Jonah Cash

You are going for a down vote record here… I’m holding my thumb for you, but is it up or down?????

    • iAmWeasel

Do I need to remind you about Microsoft’s track record with security?

      • Brian Murphy

I’m sure he’s reminded every day when a new hotfix comes out.

    • Brian Murphy

You say that as if resetting a password is a big deal…welcome to the 21st century.

  • Hammersteyn

Disc drive of death? So it has a name…

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Disc Drive of Doom :P (rather than DDof Death) Since it still works even though the optical device doesn’t.

      • Hammersteyn

        Hehe Gavin tagged it otherwise

    • Fweds

As does the PS4 Blue light of death

      • Hammersteyn

Read the tag below the article. I didn’t think this up.

  • Brian Murphy

Your references to ‘Microsoft dropping the ball’ or ‘Screwing up that first batch’ seem to forget that Microsoft INTENTIONALLY released the 360, with a KNOWN defect. Big difference between an accident, and doing something purposefully.

I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt (at present), because I can’t fathom a company doing such a thing twice to it’s fans, and it’s too early to tell whether this is another RRoD situation. However, to refer to the 360’s launch as akin to a ‘whoopsie’, is a tad disingenuous.

  • iAmWeasel

This is what MS get for buying blu-ray technology from Sony… sabotage!

    • Brian Murphy

Well, to be fair, Microsoft is simply licensing Blu Ray from the Blu Ray Group, not Sony specifically (Sony’s part of the group, but they aren’t the only members). They get a slice of the fees, but not all of it.

      • iAmWeasel

        I know.. just messing.

        • Brian Murphy

          :) S’all good.

  • Deano

People Jumping the gun here, they have sold 1 million consoles. 150 emails is a drop in the ocean.
Even if the number is close on 1000 thats a small number of 1 million consoles sold. Hardly a RROD issue.

Plus hats off to MS they are sending out replacements fast apparently and allowing the buyers effected a download of all the good launch games for download so they can play while they wait for the replacement as it will play of the hdd. Good service.

    • iAmWeasel

That’s what I said last week when everyone was preaching tech-apocalypse for the PS4.

    • Brian Murphy

Yah, as I said when we were hearing reports of PS4 issues, both companies would need to have 100,001 failures to exceed the 10% industry standard.

    • ALKi1234

More like shipped 1 million. Lots of my Xbox UK buddies says it’s to expensive now, they will wait till it gets cheaper. Thus i’m saying shipped not sold.

      • iAmWeasel

From what I’ve heard the UK only moved about 150k Xbones.

        • Fweds

From “why you have heard” that confirms it to be true then !.

You can’t buy an Xbox One anywhere in the UK only pre order for next batch there are a lot of people trying to get one before Christmas but all they say is “more stock arriving soon”.

        • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Yep, sales figures confirm they shipped about 150k xbones to the UK for the first 48 hours (compared to only 70 k xbox 360s on day one… but don’t forget the xbox 360 supply was heavily constrained. It was insanely limited. Nonetheless 150k for the UK is a pretty good number). I’m interested to see what the PS4 is going to do at the end of the week when it launches in the old country.

If Amazon UK presales are anything to go by, it’s going to be huge.

      • Deano

Sold 1 million is the figure.

And they seem to be out of stock in most UK shops so sales were pretty good.

  • FoxOneZA

Hey LG, my Xbox One has broke. Please add this to your verified stats list. I’m going to cry in a corner once I’m done tweeting #XboxOneAnnihilated and I’ll then decide to phone Mr Nelson once I’m done emailing every single gaming site on the planet :P

  • Unavengedavo(aka. MadeYouLook)
  • RyseandRepeat

“However according to Kotaku, who finally posted gaming news again” HAHAHAH! Ain’t that the truth…

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

      Hey Kotaku fills a niche… “Die Son” niche…. :P

      • Hammersteyn

Do they have a page 3?

  • house_hero

This is the biggest problem when console giants are racing for release dates. But at least it doesnt seem as widespread as as the RROD… or is it? Time will tell

    • Fweds

We don’t know, the PS4 blue light failure could be as widespread as the rrod and the timed YLOD but only time will tell.

      • Hammersteyn

I will let everyone know when I pick my PS4 December 13. Guessing you will do the same when Xbox One releases hopefully next year.

  • Darren Peach

Honesty is always the best policy. Kudos to you Microsoft. I hate you because I have to buy one these sexy X Box machines at some point. Dead Rising !!!! Forza 5 !!!!!!. Still, I am getting my PS4 first.

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Zoo Tycoon has my loins on fire… there’s just something about it that game that makes me want to get an xbone.

  • xdvd

Anybody can leave unverified comments on a forum saying that their Xbox One is broken. Just saying. Could be Sony fanboy sabotage like how fanboys affect Metacritic user ratings.

    • Fweds

The biggest joke is when they have online surveys “Did your console break” , vote as many times as you can press refresh and never have to have any proof you have ever owned the console or have even seen one.

  • Fweds

But when you read the article regarding emails they go on to say “of course there is no way of knowing if the Claims are genuine”

The articles on Amazon look at the 1 star reviews on the PS4 and then the Xbox One, around 90 percent of the people complaining about the Blue light dead console error on the PS4 are from AMAZON VERIFIED PURCHASE customers so you know they are real cases.

But now look at the Xboxone 1 star reviews and about 90 percent are NOT AMAZON VERIFIED PURCHASES.

It is blatantly obvious that most of those 1 star Xbox reviews are fake, just go and read some of them I am surprised Amazon are even allowing them through.

  • AZ_Eaglesfan

I got my PS4 today. Plugged it in, blinking blue light. Thanks Sony.

  • randomize33

I have to send my xbox one power supply back for repair because of a loud noise form it but they never offered me any free game for my trouble. I even have to send it to them first so i cannot even play while i wait for the new one.

  • The Reader

This article is poorly written. The title alone shows the writer has an agenda, saying that MS is “admitting” hardware failures as opposed to what they are actually doing which is “reporting” the failures. How come they didn’t say Sony was “admitting” that their hardware failure rate jumped to 1% in just 2 weeks? After all, the hardware failure rate for the XBox 360 that he mentions so much was just 3% after 2 weeks had gone by. The writer obviously has an agenda.

Kotaku got 150 emails from people saying their disc drives broke? But they didn’t get 1.5 million emails saying their disc drives were fine? Obviously this means failure rate is through the roof /end sarcasm.

Lastly, disc drive failure isn’t a total hardware failure. The XBox One (or the PS4 for that matter) hardly even need disc drives, you can download just about everything you could want. Nobody is going to “admit” that a broken disc drive is a hell of a lot better than a bricked console, are they?

Honestly, it seems like both consoles are doing fine. This article is just trying to cause drama over nothing. Bad article IMO.

No issues with my Wii U *whistles*
