Making games have real-time components is a tricky idea. For some games, it works well such as in the Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. For other games though it’s a clusterfudge of an annoyance, such as in Dead Rising. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 was originally going to have a real and constant flow of time, but that was scrapped in favour of the new Glory Point system.
Speaking to Dengeki, game design director Yuji Abe explained that while the latest Final Fantasy would see Lightning try to prevent the end of the world in 13 days, time could also be frozen with the Glory Point system.
“The gauge on the lower-left part of the screen is called GP, which is something like a convenience point system. This can be used during battle, to teleport to specific areas on the field, or to even stop time,” Abe said.
For example, if you have a lot going on (and not enough time), you’ll be able to stop time. So, if you go ahead and use GP without any hesitation, your playthrough will surely be easier.
It stands for Glory Point, which can be acquired upon clearing battles. Originally, it was part of the Radiant Power (points given to the Tree of Life, Yggdrasil, to extend the lifespan of the world) but that would weigh in on the balance of the world’s life span, so we separated it so as to not cause any hesitation. Now, it can be used without having to worry about the world’s life span.
So what happens if a player doesn’t use their Glory Points? Expect the game to be far more difficult according to Abe:
I believe there will be a huge hurdle to doing that; however, Lightning will be able to level up by simply clearing key events, which will increase her parameters. Again, if you want to increase her parameters by a larger amount, you can also purchase equipment.
It’s an interesting system for the game. Personally, I’m not that keen on another Final Fantasy XIII game, as the core gameplay formula of that series feels too automatic for me. The game is out soon though

Just under $130. Flash sale on Sunday made me splurge on FF7 & MK Komplete Edition, otherwise I was right on budget. Luckily I got some money back from the tax man so I didn’t feel too bad.
Max Payne 3 is a 28gb download!

Weird though. Geoff is Afrasian, so looking at the glory hole Darryn took a photo of, we know what part of Africa Geoff didn’t get.
