Lag truly is making COD Advanced Warfare unplayable

Geoff posted an article a few days back asking if you were suffering from Lag in Advanced Warfare and while I hadn’t heard anything yet the response to that article definitely convinced us that there was a real problem occurring.

However everyone knows how the Internet loves to complain so I really didn’t think too much of it until last night when I decided to take a break in my single player campaign and jump into the some multiplayer. Now only a few days earlier I had been part of the team that won our local invitational and so I expected that when I went online with other locals we would have a similarly great experience.

How wrong I was. For the first 15 minutes I literally couldn’t even get into the multiplayer main menu. The game just kept on crashing out when trying to connect to Xbox Live. I was convinced it was something with my connection but I checked everything and I had a perfect open NAT, all other games were working 100% and my ping was well under 20ms so what was the problem?

I finally got to the multiplayer menu and searched for a game of deathmatch. I was thrown into a game in under a minute. So far so good. The game started up and instantly it was obvious there was a severe problem. I, and others, were warping all over the map and the game was absolutely unplayable. I would walk around the corner and suddenly be dead for no reason. When watching the killcam I could see that according to the game there was someone right in front of me but they weren’t there when I was playing.

I quit the game and tried a few more searches. Out of my 5 attempts I had one playable game, the rest were unplayable by a huge margin. Next I joined up with two other locals who were also complaining about how bad the lag was and we decided to jump into a co-op game of exo-survival instead.

Now while most of the rounds in exo-survival were fine, every now and then we all lagged out ridiculously badly to such an extent that people were being warped off the map and to their death. Eventually I was just booted from the game due to lack of connectivity. This in a game being played between 3 players who all live within a 50km radius.

It’s an unacceptable issue and one that I am sure Sledgehammer are working on but that doesn’t change the fact that this should never have happened. Call of Duty is released annually and is heavily reliant on quick movements and tight aiming, the fact that this wasn’t picked up in QA testing and can even occur with all the experience behind the game is mind blowing.

I’m loving the game so far but there is absolutely no way this game can be played unless Activision and Sledgehammer sort this out quickly. According to Internet reports the worst affected platforms are PS4 and PC, however I simply cannot believe their experience is worse than my Xbox One experience. It looks like we are all in the same boat.

If it makes you feel better you can complain to the official Activision and Sledgehammer twitter accounts, but trust me they know about the problem already.

And that is what you get when devs go cheap and do not want Servers to support (and if they have servers the game wont be in the bin by next year, so people wont buy the 0.5 update again.

Games with servers run for years and years, so it will cost them money and Activision loves money.

YOu would argue incorrectly. If you release the server code to users they can host their own for years and years after the game servers go cold. Case in point: almost any pure PC MP game.

That may be true on PC, but in the console realm it won’t happen because console gamers aren’t dedicated enough to set up and maintain their own servers.

I thought they would up the ante and make use of cloud servers considering the huge number of players and being next-gen and all that. I see EA are also struggling with server issues for FIFA 15. They even left-out the random quick match online feature.

Its hard to score from set pieces as it is, though taking direct kicks now is easier, they trimmed the game way too much for me, yesterday i went onto creation center and saw it only for ps3 or xb360, which is dumb really

Free kicks is very close to impossible to keep out now!! The wall doesn’t jump high enough even if you time it perfectly, and putting a guy on the line doesn’t work anymore and your keeper never gets to the ball!! All I hope for is that the guy I’m playing against haven’t practiced it at all, and puts it over or wide!!

PC is quite the joke to… No one has stable pings because its p2p so yes, theres warping around and general unstableness PLUS the fact that im still lagging with everything turned off and my res set to 1280×800… So far a terrible experience, which could be fixed with some dedicated servers, a new gfx card and some good patches from sledgehammers side.

COD2 on X360 had the best netcode of any game I have ever seen in my life. No matter what time of day or night I felt like playing a few rounds, it would always find a pretty full server within seconds and there would be just about zero lag the entire time.

Tried the SP on PC last night. Runs amazing tbh. Well optimised, looks great. With everything maxed out the GPU only hit 52 degrees (fans only kick in after 60!).

Granted I only tried at 1080p. I am sure it will be more demanding at higher resolutions.

I said this the other day and for that matter, I say this every year.

For South African console players where there are no servers in
South Africa means that the experience they will have with Call of Duty
AW will be, lag, gameplay frame slow downs (where the host just runs
around shooting people that can’t move), and gameplay breaks where
everyone is booted to back to lobby.

So I know what the experiences will be. They have not changed shit over the years. The more
shit they add the worse the experience has gotten over the years.

So I don’t need to play the game to know what that experience will be like.

That was my reply. And you took it out of context, from the very bottom of a rather long thread.

You know what? I haven’t had a bad experience playing COD (on pc and except for Ghosts). I’ve never had a fast connection either. Dedicated servers would obviously be the best option but when we don’t have them we make lemonade FFS. It’s crap that the multiplayer is such a problem right now, this is a shitty situation with AW but I’d rather be productive and optimistic than childish and pessimistic. Fuck me, right?

Every iteration of this ‘franchise’ has been patched and fixed and, most importantly, the multiplayer component has been – and still is – the industry benchmark.
Also, I like how you give up an argument on one thread so you go to another to complain about it. Thanks.

I’m sorry to say, YOU HAVE BEEN DOING IT.
I’m not trying to impress you, logic isn’t something you brag about. You’ve called me a hippie and other words so YOU’RE the aggressive one. Calling me and others trolls and all kinds of other nonsense (like how you said someone sounds like a drug user just because they tell you something’s free).

Normally I do ignore this unnecessary nonsense, but you replied to me posting a W3 link. I didn’t latch on to something you said, quite the opposite. YOU STARTED THE ARGUMENT as you love to call it. Stop playing the high and mighty card and acting like I’m out to get you. I really don’t care if you don’t want to talk, if you comment on the internet you open yourself to criticism and debate.

It’s not that you’re DRM this or anti-that, the problem is that you insult people who engage you critically. But I’ll leave you alone. You’re far from worth it and I’m sorry to LG for me entertaining this. Bye now.

If this is your events log then you dead wrong. I replied to Trevor (the link you mentioned). I didn’t call you a hippie. I just said flower power hippie much to your anti negativity campaign. I didn’t call that person a drug user and the way in which he replied to me, I made a joke about the 1st drug hit being free.

The word I used was trolling. Fuck it I don’t care for explaining shit. I have never trolled any one of your comments. And mostly what I have been doing is responding to you trolling my comments. Your stuff is directed at me as a person and I don’t care for shit like that. That I said in my reply to Trevor is basically the same thing Umar said in the witcher article. Why you not trolling him. Because your focus is now on me as a person. Whereas I like to focus on the topic and how to manipulate the topic to suit my anti DRM, EA, Ubisoft, Call of Duty, Xbox One, comments. And then I have to deal with the troll responses.

But keep on making it about me. Logic. lol.

            Wow man. Just wow.
Do I have to? Are we really getting technical and nit-picky now? Fine, I’ll indulge you one last time. You know, for the sake of the popcorn.

Trolling you say? I can get cheeky, but I make sure whatever I say still has a point. Trolling is pointless so it doesn’t make sense to attribute it to my comments. You call everything a troll and put it in your troll box and disregard anything else.
I can’t believe I have to say this, but I replied to Trevor, then you replied to me. Check that log of yours if you don’t believe me.

I didn’t reply to Umar because I didn’t see his comment at the time, but I’m pretty sure what he had to say wasn’t nearly as pessimistic as what you do, I’ve engaged with him enough to know that much.

So stop being irrationally sensitive; I wasn’t attacking you personally, I haven’t personified any insult of any kind and it’s your choice to take it as such (out of curiosity I’d love to see an example).

I told you I’ll stop ‘cos nothing productive comes out of conversing with you. You’ve made it abundantly clear that that’s (apparently) your choice, as odd as it may seem to me. Good for you. Now seriously, TRY to have a good weekend.

Ryan, apologize’s you were right it. The previous CoD’s I’ve played haven’t had this much of an issue. For whatever reason this one seems to be the worst effected. The netcode is terrible for a lot of players and there is bad lag. There wasn’t this issue with Ghost or BO2 or at least myself and the people I play with didn’t experience it. I’m hoping a update will rectify this soon.

That said, my experience on the PS4 has been great. I haven’t had issues and find generally local lobbies in domination and TDM no problems and 9/10 games will run fine. League is more international lobbies at the moment which I put down to a lot of people writing exams and I’m hoping with the weekend it changes and we find more local league lobbies. You do need a strong line to guarantee a good game. My friends on 3G or lines less than 2MB are having problems and it goes down to ISP as well. Some ISP’s seem to put you in international lobbies instead of local.
From everything I’ve seen on the XBox One and PC its a different story where people only find international lobbies. So there is definitely a problem.

Hm, I can, with my 10mb unshaped ADSL line, play some games on-line no problems, works perfectly, without local servers. I know of plenty of people who play battlefield with nary a concern about lag. I do not think, in this case, the problem is a South African one.

Yet the South African problem definitely does exist with a lot of games, including BF for the most part. My previous ISP was terrible for games, really. I switched to Afrihost and suddenly I could play games online (Star Trek, Star Wars, that sort). The guy in my granny flat, same connection as me, plays the whole spectrum of games with mostly good response times. I know he played Final Fantasy basically for two weeks solid.

My point is the tech used to do the multi-player in the games makes a big difference as well, and then our poor lines and lack of infrastructure does not help either.

Shouldnt have anything to do with our lines tho! All you need is atleast a 1mb to connect to the game and with servers you shouldnt have any lag playing locally. Its so simple, its almost as if they’re run by the anc.

So you have two options with PVP type games it seems. Get the game day one, suffer through all the horrible lag and such. Or wait three months then join the PVP but then get your ass handed to you by people who have unlocked most guns and abilities and knows the maps inside out. Good fun.

AW has got its share of lag issues locally, but i do believe this is mainly due to our base internet connectivity (granted it has improved greatly over the last 2 years, but we are over 5 years behind the rest of the world in terms of residential bandwidth speeds) and our geography is not great, we are 180ms away from EU and close to or even over 300ms in the USA in terms of ping. I believe that the next gen platforms were designed for higher broadband connections, do a multiplayer connectivity test on xb1 and press RT + LT+ RB + LB when prompted with Everything is good here (or something like that) to get the actual latency return from your console to live servers to see what i mean. Until MS provide Azure Cloud servers in our region, we will be laggy. Granted this relates directly to XB1 players, but Sony should have a similar back end.

This fact alone leads me to believe that it may be a contributing factor as to why PS4 and PC appear to have more lag complaints (No this is not a fanboi statement, just a logical assumption)

Activision resolved a lot of lag issues at launch by implementing a hybrid dedicated / P2P server/host model which basically polled gamers in close proximity (IP Ranges)/regions together and from there compensated for the various connections using their P2P model (lag compensation / netcode) which did create a vast improvement locally to latency issues. Bear in mind that although one can play on a 1MB connection, Upload is more important than download in this instance, and were we on average have between 512Kbps Upload on a 4Mbps connection overseas players are averaging between 2Mbps – 4 Mbps Upload on connections in excess of 40Mps which is a huge gap to fill for us as they have the upper hand in sending data back to the servers faster than we can.

Local dedicated servers are definitely the answer for our region, but that being said we have such a large spread of connectivity variances and connectivity types (3G, Iburst, HSDPA, VDSL, WiMax etc) many of which fall on the lower tier of current day internet connectivity, we are bound to continue to have lag issues.

Actually the PS4-PC problems being higher is from an American ‘survey’

I even won a competition here on Lazygamer for being the biggest CoD fan in SA. However, Ghosts was such a major dissapointment for me that I vowed, if I don’t see dedicated servers in CoD AW then I don’t buy it. Finished. I am so happy I haven’t wasted my money on this game, but at the same time I’m so dissapointed that a once majestic game has fallen so far from grace. I still play BO1 purely because that was the last CoD with dedicated servers and a server browser. The developers and publishers know what works, but they feel absolutely nothing for their money spinners, US!

This has been a problem since the CODs of yore. Mainly, MW2 was enjoyable, didn’t like BO, MW3 introduced the issue of getting shot by bullets out of Wanted and emptying half a mag into someone’s face only according to their killcam I never started firing. All of this with “full green bar” connection all around. I was really interested in this as I do like the COD gameplay but the lag (comp) kills it for me. Concerned this game will be plagued by the same problems.

I saw at the start of the video it said lag compensation. From what I saw in that video and my history playing Call of Duty, that just looks like straight up lag. Your internet connection could be fine and the best but it all depends on the host’s connection or server stress.

How to explain lag compensation. One connection is good and another is bad. The good connection is running around and comes across the bad connection and shoots at him. Lets say that the bad connection guy was aiming and shot as soon as the good connection appeared on the screen. It will take, depending on the ping, 1 to 2 seconds, South African uk ping, for the good connection guy to die on the bad connections screen.
On the good connection’s screen, he would have been running, saw the bad connection person and began shooting. On his screen it would seem like he shot 1st and the bad connection never fired but after 2 seconds the good connection will die because in actual fact the bad connection shot 1st. That’s lag compensation.

If the bad connection runs around like Rambo and comes across good connections who shoot accurately, he is going to die 100% of the time because he needs like 2 seconds to shoot 1st.

Without lag compensation people with bad pings wouldn’t be able to shoot at the people on their screens. They would have to shoot like 2 seconds in front of the people on the screen.

Anyway. In the video you posted it’s just lag and bad net code. It’s not lag compensation.

Yeah it just straight up lag. It’s not about your connection being great. It’s about the connection the host has and the your ping to that host. If the host has a shitty internet line and shitty upload speed then you can expect the type of lag in that video.

I don’t buy Cod anymore. So I’m not sure how the search works. I like the ping search, more likely to land up in a match with a good host. But if that host leaves then you might end up with a bad host again.
Not sure if the search function is region locked and ping based. If there is search options set it to ping based.

When a Call of Duty launches it’s usually just a free for all when it comes to finding a match. Any match that’s available as quick as possible. Then the region and ping searches gets patched in.

Not sure if you connecting to servers yet. If you are then servers are stressed.

You noticed at end of a bad game the winner has the lowest ping ? check it out. I see game after game the top 1-2-3 finishers have 1 bar I have full bar and lagged the whole game. Are the lagging winners doing it on purpose ? looks like all you need to do is keep your bar low and you win. That’s got to be a faulty lag compensation setup ….. not sure lol. what bars are you seeing at end of a crappie game. ?

The game was great on release, but lately, the lag makes it truly unplayable! 8-10 hit markers to the back only to have the enemy spin around and kill you with one shot. Dying before you even see the enemy come around a corner. I give up. I just don’t think they are capable of making a reliable multiplayer game. Every release, I buy another game only to be disappointed. Also, why does it take them so long to patch a map glitch? $60.00 spent only to have players cheating in every match. I’m done with Activision!

Dont pull your hair out yet as its going to get WORSE……. 🙁 …… CEO needs a kick up the nuts for doing this, hes had weeks to fix the problem and its not getting done? SITTING ON HIS FAT HAIRY #$%$ SPENDING ALL THE KIDS CHRISTMAS CASH, What a sham. CLASS ACTION THESE F-WITS they knew 100% this was going to get worse at Christmas. miss-selling an inferior/defective product and raking in cash that is NOT GETTING USED TO BUY A F KIN SERVER. PS: anyone feel like buying the next map pack ? Map1- Stutter, Map2-CODAW-Graveyard, Map3 Grinch’s wasteland, Map4 COD-CEO-PENTHOUSE (very large map, the biggest yet on the COD series).
