How to fix Dragon Age: Inquisition’s nasty audio bug

Dragon Age: Inquisition is an exquisite game, but it isn’t without its problems. I ran into a handful during my review, but lately they’ve been cropping up more and more. The most annoying one by far is a little audio glitch that strips the game of all its sound effects, and sometimes crashes dialogue entirely. BioWare has yet to fix it, but there are some ways around it.

First and foremost, check the settings in the audio menu. For some reason Inquisition can magically change you over to a surround sound setup even if it was rocking stereo the last time you played. If you’re using a headset or only a 2.1 speaker setup, this could seriously mess around with where the audio is being sent, and therefore cut it out entirely in some places.

If that’s not the issue, then you’re definitely experiencing the bug. It seems to happen a lot during combat, with sound effects cutting out and then carrying over to dialogue. Avoiding any form of dialogue while it’s out is advisable, and I’ve often found that the sound eventually pops back in after a bit of exploring and fighting.

But sometimes that’s unavoidable, as I found out during a particularly important quest that had cutscenes peppered throughout. Having the bug strike here is especially painful, as it blocks dialogue options from popping up and forces you to either read subtitles or sometimes skip dialogue segments entirely. Forcefully hitting skip should eventually bring up the dialogue wheel, and the game doesn’t really seem to make decisions for you. So if you’re fine reading subtitles, then don’t be afraid to use it.

But sometimes things get really bad and the game just hangs infinity on a character, waiting for him or her to talk or have interaction with you. In these situations it’s best to try and quit the game, reload and boot up your last automatic save. This often solves the issue at any time, so if having no audio bugs you that much don’t be afraid to just kick it down and restart. You’ll lose progress, but thankfully the bug doesn’t seem to knock on the door at the same place every time.

It’s incredibly annoying, and seems to be a widespread issue on all platforms. I’m pretty sure BioWare is aware of the issue, especially since there are multiple forum threads detailing it, so I’d expect it to be fixed in a patch rather soon. Hopefully this helps until then – or hopefully you get to explore Thedas relatively bug-free.

Normally my mantra as well! But wife is crazy for Dragon Age, so I got DA: I Digital Deluxe Edition for her birthday, runs beautifully on my i7 laptop. But dead screen on my HTPC (apparently because its a dual core, and the game requires at least a quad core). So instead of hoping for a patch. I’ve now had to fork out more cash for a quad core CPU. Hopefully will finally run when the new cpu arrives. But from what we have played so far, the game is pretty amazing! Still, has made me realise why I never pre-order.

I had a similar problem when I first installed the game (I got it as a Christmas present from my boyfriend, the one who got me hooked on Dragon Age in the first place), we had to go out and get me a new CPU, and because we couldn’t afford anything fancy, I still have to play the game on all the lowest graphics settings. Was so gutted when I finally got my hands on a digital copy of the game, downloaded it (it took OVER A DAY to download because we have U-Verse and our internet speeds SUCK so bad), and installed it only to have the green icon in the right hand bottom of the screen, and nothing but black…and then nothing. I am not gonna lie…I cried. I was so frustrated. My boyfriend shelled out the 60$ for the game, and then had to fork out another 130$ for the CPU so I could play the bloody thing. Now with the latest patch the game crashes to desktop for no apparant reason, as well as whenever I click the wrong spot on a vendor. My boyfriend says I’m like a battered woman, constantly going back to the game for more punishment, but it is as you say, pretty amazing…so I kinda can’t help myself. I just can’t wait to see how it all plays out!!

        agreed. good gaem

from what i can tell, you gain nothing by increasing the difficulty.
XP gain is no different and all it ends up doing is making your game take longer actually decreasing your xp gain.
never been a fan of increased difficulties.
Im a decent gamer, but if i want a challenge, il play dota or battlefield or something.

that aside, the dragons are tough enough as it is with the limited potions you can carry. although playing harder difficulties would encourage better habits and a more strategic approach to fights.

It’s more for the strategic elements. I found in DA:O and especially DA2 that I could just run in and smash everything. Now I actually have to plan especially when the enemies are 2 levels higher 🙂

i struggled with DA:O, found every enemy overpowered, the start of the game was way too tough.
alternatively, DA2 was too easy, stomped everything.
            DA:I has a nice balance.

nah, im good at games, but i dont play single player for the challenge, unless theres a pay off for playing on harder difficulties.

Haha just teasing! I also don’t like playing games on the highest difficulty if there isn’t at least an achievement for bragging rights. And sometimes it really does become unfair with how accurate the AI shoots etc.
I still say playing MP really increased my skills quicker than anything else. After I started COD and BF mp, singleplayer fps games suddenly became too easy and the AI to retarded!

AI being retarded is the biggest thing.
once singleplayer gets too easy, thats when you drop things back down to normal, sit back and enjoy the game, rather than the challenge 😛

I know they put out a PSA to say you shouldn’t spend too much time in Hinterlands. I did the same, then found out it’s a mistake. Apparently you should just continue with the story (difficult, I know. So much stuff to collect) but they said you will outlevel everything if you finish Hinterlands before moving on

I don’t think Bioware intended that you complete all the regions in the game before progressing with the main story line. Otherwise the recommended levels for the main missions don’t really make sense, but whatever floats your boat.

            November 27, 2014 at 11:50

i play the games the way i want to.
regardless of how you plan out the missions, you are going to end up overlevelled. its the same with most RPGs

if bioware wanted to encourage you to do the main story line, they should have had a more gradual release of the side missions and more recognisable / noticable main missions.
it all blends together too well.

Have to admit: I almost regret running on Nightmare, due to the fact that I keep getting thrown around like a meat-toy to the Dragons… *grumbles*

It worked fine on their side when they tested it? As Matty said below he hasn’t come across it and neither have I. I thinks it’s becoming harder for programmers to factor in every type of hardware and driver out there. Sometimes they miss things. It’s what they do and how they handle the misses that counts.

” I thinks it’s becoming harder for programmers to factor in every type of hardware and driver out there.” – I think that’s a cop out by game developers. This might be true in the PC space but on the console front they have no excuse- the consoles are closed systems in general and don’t have the same diversity of components and systems to contend with that exist in the PC space… It really smacks of a lack of adequate testing and the continuous prevailing belief that devs can deliver sub-par systems and just fix it with a downloadable patch…

Having said that – you’re spot on with it’s not that there might be bugs in a system, its how they handle them when discovered and EA don’t have a good track record in this space…

As an aside did anybody actually READ the DA:I licence agreement… there’s some pretty intrusive crap in there that gives EA a lot of rights about my information IMHO…

Buy the PS4 version which is equivalent to a PC on high settings, connect it to a good monitor, and you’ll have a perfect gaming experience for $60 lol…or go spend $3K on a new PC with dual 980s in SLI to play on Ultra for slightly better textures and more grass on a PC that may not play the game properly after any big update is released…especially if you use SLI..which Nvidia is getting worse and worse with supporting in a reasonable amount of time.

When I get the audio bug with the sound effects gone I can get it working by opening the R1 menu and closing it again.

There’s an easier way to swat this bug that doesn’t involve reloading a save and potentially lose progress. When the bug pops up pause the game and go into the audio options changes the dynamic range setting apply the change then set it back to yer preferred DR exit the menu and the sound will be back.

The bugs are nothing compared to other games released this year but I feel this audio bug is the worst of the couple that I have found. Also game is still worth it even with the couple of bugs it has and honestly bugs will be patched in no time so best to get started on this huge masterpiece of an RPG. Looks like year will end on a great note and then start next year on a great note as well for the RPG genre, between DA 3 and Witcher 3 both of these great RPGS will take up all my time xD.

So, how does it feel to be beta testers for EA? How much are they paying you? Wait, you’re paying them, really? Ever looked in the mirror and seen a pair of donkeys ears?

The answer is simple, never buy on release, wait for a year, get the game half price and play it without bugs. You remember – like games used to be. Games companies are quite simply abusing the internet, don’t let them.

It hit me when I was first entering a city and I thought my tv’s audio just died. This is really annoying and I hope BioWare gets it fixed soon.

It’s the best DA so far. I can live with the bugs. I’ve got 70+ hours on it (ps4). It’s a great game.

I’m sitting around waiting for them to fix bugs right now. I have a quest active guy I need to talk to is right in front of me and the dialog message never shows up which means I can’t finish the quest means I get no experience wheich means I can’t level up enough to kill higher level enemies hence end of gameplay til they fix that problem. I just went back to skyrim.

Bugs are starting to water down my experience in single player. I can out-skill most of the bugs in multiplayer but they still erk me at times.. How Bioware had the balls to release something so untested is beyond me. They’re starting to show EA’s true form with glitched up messes.

Don’t get me wrong I love what works in this game (Exlcuding the dumbing down on skill managing with your party members(you can’t set up chain combos atm)). Anywho, i’m sure these issues will be patched overtime, but its shameful to release something so glitched is all.

Experienced audio cutting out in Storm Coast. Could hear my speakers turn off. They worked fine out of game. Reloading the game to previous saves didn’t work for me, what did work though was going into audio settings and resetting audio settings (Y for those using xbox controller) Sound came back immediately.

If you are on PC with home cinema just configure in other 5.1 under Windows (should be there 2 options) or put it in 4.1 and that’s all… IT IS THIS WAY FOR YEARS n00b5…

On Xbox 360, we got round this bug by loading up another save game on my wife’s account. After loading an unbuged save, even on another account, my saves got the sound back.

Hope this works for others too. Stupid bug.

Is anyone else encountering dialogue skips?
I have now 4 times within 5 hours had to load a previous save before a conversation, because a companion suddenly starts talking *really* fast. I cant make out a thing they are saying, it´s just a jumbled mess of words and sound warbled at me. If I reload the problem is gone. Same thing has happened in certain areas, I´ll be standing by a waterfall and the sound suddenly fastforwards while I walk past it and then starts cutting out for a few seconds before starting over in a loop. If I leave the area and walk back, the sound will be normal again.
    Strange..

Well, I’m glad to see its not my cheap headphones or something wrong with my sound card or drivers. The audio only started dying on me after this most recent patch (3, iirc), and it is such a pain in the ass to have to close out the game completely and restart it…if the loading times weren’t so high, it wouldn’t be so bad, but maybe that’s just me and my not-so-newish computer. The most recent patch has also made my game stability almost non-existant. I am having to stop and save obsessively every few minutes in fear of the next crash to desktop…it seems to happen most often when clicking on vendors, but sometimes for no reason that I can tell, it’ll just die and disappear almost as if I hit alt+F4…which I am certain I did not. I’d put the game down and wait for at least a few more patches, but I spoiled myself slightly with a couple of things that happen in the final act, and the anticipation of playing through those things with my Inquisitor is the only thing that is keeping me going for the moment!

I have found that (at least on pc) that hitting the reset in the audio section of the options menu fixes everything sound related. This has happened to me several times in several places (Storm Coast, Fallow Mire, Western Approach). Still even with an easy fix I can’t wait till wither bioware fixes this or a fan does.

You may have noticed that this game has an auto start feature that brings you from rest mode directly back to your last save point. This feature is closely related to the audio bug. After disabling the feature in the main menu, I have not had the issue again. Restarting your console occasionally will also rid you of the problem temporarily.
