Here’s why the Playstation 4 looks so sexy

An original photo of myself at the PS4 event

You know what the most overlooked aspect is of console design? Longevity. Few console features looks that will last a decade or two. I mean hell, just look at Atari? Wooden panels? Yeah, that’ll go nicely with the drapes. The Playstation 4 on the other hand, is a sexy beast of a console. And that’s all because Sony didn’t want to embarrass you.

Speaking to Kotaku last week, Sony’s VP of PlayStation hardware marketing John Koller said that the PS4 "was designed to be an impact product in an entertainment centre.”

We wanted the design to be something sleek, something people feel proud about including.

Sony put a lot of research into the console it seems, before they decided to AC/DC things up and stay back in black. Because that’s what people want. "We think it’s best, actually," Koller said.

The research we’ve done show most people appreciate that. For those who appreciate colours, we do offer them for other platforms. Nothing to announce here or plans for PS4.

As with previous Playstation consoles, the machine can stand either upright with a stand, or lie flat on its side, while the blue strip that runs through it lights up when turned on.

I saw the console at E3 last week, up close. Which is most likely why a massive American security guard started to practice some judo rolls on top of my spine. But it was worth it, because the damn thing is truly a sexy piece of tech.

News on the PS4 gets better daily and news on the XBONE gets worse daily!! But surely even MS can’t find more shit to make people angry with????? Or am I hoping for a miracle here?

    • Hammersteyn

Uncharted 3 and XCOM free to download on PS+ as well.Middle of the month of all times. Usually they only release games at the start of the month and I got Last of Us.
      Sony FTW!

      • CaptainNemo42

Wait, what about Uncharted 3 and XCOM?

        • TechniKyle

They are free on PSN+, as well as LBP karting. Problem is UC3 is 33GB. Get XCOM! It’s awesome.

          • CaptainNemo42

LBP KARTING!!!!! Why didn’t I hear of this before?

Also, I don’t need to download UC3 right now, I at least got it on disc.

          • Hammersteyn

I had XCOM on disc an never got round to playing it. So I traded it and Metro for a discount on Last of Us :)

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Have you started the Last of Us yet?

          • Hammersteyn

Nope, definitely tonight though. Didn’t want to sleep anyway.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Enjoy every single minute of the opening 30 minutes …. it is, mind blowing

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

I finished it last night on hard, starting new game + mode this evening. All I can say is… hauntingly beautiful. This is my game of the last decade – without a doubt.

          • Argentil

Ja, I’ve been comparing it to HL2′s impact on the industry. It really deserves the praise. Valve need to hurry up and develop more HL before Naughty Dog overtake them as the best developers EVAR.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Yeah busy on hard mode, haven’t touched the listening mode, makes the game feel cheap for me. Can agree with you on this one…one of the best games this gen

          • Argentil

Hah, I like the inclusion of listening mode. I do think they could have made the visual representation of sound a bit more abstract and obscure, but I really like the mechanic. Also, it exists as a hint that the game is meant to be played stealthy, foremost. We are so used to shooting our way through encounters. This was a really refreshing take on the stealth AND horror genres – WITH an excellent story and characters.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Agreed, I play it stealth, the way it’s meant to be played…but what is so amazing about this game, what I LOOOVE about this freaking amazing game, is that the sound is actually so good, if you just listen yourself, you can ascertain where the enemies are and if you are at a distance you just need to move closer and scout, which I find to be more fun, as that’s how you would do it if you were in that position

          • Hammersteyn

Can’t wait. “Hey boss. my arm fell off again can I go home?”

          • Melasco

I’m about 2 hours is, it’s fantastic…. I can’t wait to see what ND will do on PS4…

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

agreed, just past the 4 hour mark, I don’t feel like playing anymore, I don’t want it to end lol but Indeed, ND has shot up to my favorite game developer. But I do wonder about something, if the ps3 had such difficult architecture and that’s why games were ‘worse’ on the ps3 as it was on 360, how can they produce a game like TLOU? Seriously, once loaded, there are zero further loading screens and I have experienced no lag, the game is smooth as hell. Were devs just lazy to figure out the ps3?

          • ALKi1234

Very Good question my friend. I’t boggles the mind.why can’t most games look like that? Last night 2 in the morning i was just amazed looking at the walls and all the textures in TLOU….the amount of work that went into that game is unprecedented.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Hey, I was awake that time too playing it :) yeah, I agree completely , you can feel how much love and care went into that game … what really blows my mind is how seamless it all is, from CGI to cutscene to gameplay , all of it flows into each other without any hitch whatsoever…which propels it’s immersion sky high. I can’t really judge you know, I would like to call other devs lazy, but hey I don’t know what they go through, but when they really put effort and hard work in we get something like this. A gem amongst gems

          • ALKi1234

            CGI?

          • Argentil

I believe it’s pre-rendered cutscenes. Similar to what God of War pioneered. Instead of Loading screens, the game loads in the background while a pre-rendered cutscene plays.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Yes, exactly that, great trick, doesn’t cut immersion , which is a huge plus

          • Haunted99

The other devs are just lazy or they don’t have the time to make the games look great. Most of the Sony studios have some of the best looking games on this generations consoles.

          • Melasco

ND developed the engine specifically for PS3, and could therefore use the SPU’s for graphics processing proving that it’s quite a bit more “capable” than a 360 for this kind of game and graphics…

But, most developers would choose the “Easy” platform to build the game so they don’t get stuck too long ironing out engine issues. Sadly that means they usually start on 360, and then port to PS3 afterwards, often leaving PS3 owners with the slightly worse and less polished experience, the other reason is that should they build a game for Cell, porting it would be impossible, they’ll have to rewrite the whole engine.

However, this is not always the case, and as an example there’s a SPU based shading system implemented in DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine, which is why BF3 looks and runs slightly better on PS3 compared to 360… This is sadly not the norm because of the complexity, and Dev’s would rather spend more time on content creation, something I support and understand 100%.

ND had 3 uncharted games to perfect their engine for PS3, and what we now see in TLOU is really amazing… And this includes animantion, audio and like mentioned above, basically no loading once you are in the game.

          • Aussious

A huge design over site on Sony’s part, and one the reasons Sony lost so much ground this gen.

          • Argentil

It wasn’t an oversight as much as it was a deliberate decision to stagger the quality of games over the years, as it was with the PS2. It’s a means of artificially improving the look of games over the years. Kinda like self-handicapping.

          • Aussious

Not very logical business wise when your competition doesn’t need crutches.

          • Argentil

Well, there are always teething problems with the beginning of each generation. Launch titles never look as good as their sequels.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Hmm very nice explanation. Games have always been ported to PS3 and makes sense as to why First party games run so great on the system when it was developed for that system.

They had a beast of a machine…if only it was simpler to create games for

          • TechniKyle

How can you only be 4 hours in! I beat the game on Saturday! The game just gets better and better, especially at the end.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Taking my sweet time, I don’t want it to end:( it’s so very good ……….. but hot damn the game came out Friday and you’re done already

          • TechniKyle

I don’t mess around. My backlog is too big.

          • Argentil

Playstation Plus gives me too much gamer guilt, lol. I have like 15 games waiting for me, and about 30+ I need to plat. I like to plat games I truly enjoy.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

lol mine too, but I doubt any of the games in the log are as great. but hey they all deserve attention

          • Argentil

My only gripe is that I don’t have the resilience to play TLoU for an entire day non-stop. The bleakness really gets to you after a while, and there are certain points involving darkness and Clickers that reeeaaally make you want to put the game down and watch My Little Pony, or something.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Haha, it’s pretty run down, at times you would think you’re becoming emo. know what you mean

          • Argentil

Yup, my SO had nightmares for two consecutive nights. I turned into a clicker in one of them.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

HAHA, oh man, that’s horrible!!Did she throw you with a bottle? ;p

          • CaptainNemo42

On the subject of The Last of Us. Who here has had a look at the Multiplayer?

          • Spathi

I had some time with it, and love it. It is much more slow paced and stealth plays a big role. You can buy stuff during play and also craft stuff during play.

I don’t get the whole “meta” game yet, still need to go and read up on that. I’m too scared to do so before finishing the Single player however. The singleplayer is truly something special though.

          • oomjan

I must say multiplayer is not bad at all. I like it. at first I sucked but once I got used to it I was kicking ass

          • Rinceyouropinion

oh man, you are in for a treat. OVG and I watched the first hour of the on Sat, it blew our minds. OVG was quiet, QUIET for an HOUR! Then the rage at MS came in strong…

          • Hammersteyn

            LOL

          • Melasco

I also downloaded XCOM, never played it.. but first I need to finish Last of us and I’m almost done with Dark Souls.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

One is never done with a Souls game ;)

          • Melasco

Most addictive and rewarding game ever…. I can’t wait for Dark Souls 2, and it isn’t even on next gen…. I wish I played this back in 2011 already… I only picked it up recently… Eats time I don’t have lol, exams getting closer!

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

I can’t wait either. A game that takes real skill to complete. Goodluck with exams

          • Hammersteyn

Cannot wait or Dark Souls 2.

          • Hammersteyn

XCOM is very addictive. Snipers FTW.

          • Aussious

            And punishingly difficulty!

          • Hammersteyn

They were like capture aliens alive and I was like WTF!

          • RMKennySA

LBP Karting is AWESOME! Go straight to online multilayer. You wont regret it!

          • RMKennySA

is it not compressed to 14gb for download?

      • http://www.idontlikegamingiloveit.com Tateboetie Malaaitie

Dammit, paid R499 for my xcom on pc, starting to realy think about getting this new ps. Get xcom its epic.

        • Argentil

That’s R10 more than a year of Playstation Plus, lol. Sorry, rubbing it in a bit. You should get it though. Nothing quite like it. IMO, it’s Sony’s strategy to bring more gamers into the digital age. Much less obtrusive than forced checks and constrictive DRM.

    • Maverick
      • Mark Treloar

Which raises the question. How long would it take a talented hacker to turn Xbox One exclusives into PC cracked editions?

        • Argentil

It’s not as simple as that. If anything, it indicates that we will be seeing more PC ports this gen. When the games are adapted to the XboxOne, they will be difficult to emulate on PC.

          • Mark Treloar

Or it may be just as simple as that. Both are x86 systems, and with all those images floating around of Microsoft using PC’s running Windows 7 to demo at E3 its not exactly impossible to believe.

          • Argentil

The 360 shared a similar pc architecture at the time. We still lack a 360 emulator.

      • Aussious

That to me says this console is no where near ready…

  • Hammersteyn

The look of the console reminds me of the PS2 a lot. The design looks a lot better than the George Foreman grill aka PS3

    • John Ambitious

Remember the tiny PS1 that looked like a CD walkman? Wonder how many of those are still around and working. I’m a pc guy, but the PS4 is looking really good…

      • HvR

I’ve got one in the cupboard, set it up for my son every few month must say quite impressed with the durability, the discs however ain’t toddler proof.

        • John Ambitious

Can believe so. Excellent though. Wish I never got rid of mine…

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

lol I still have my CD Walkman Playstation 1, and the big massive starship one. I love that console…

        • Argentil

I have a Phat PS for every generation. And they all still work. Well… my baby cousins (at the time) really effed up my poor Playstation one, so the disk needs to be held in with prestik, and the disk reader is supported by about 20 x 5c coins. But it probably still works.

  • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Hmmm Sony Sony .. not only will you give us a true next gen console but you have given me The Last of Us, probably one of the best games this generation, muv love

” For those who appreciate colours, we do offer them for other platforms” << Can I have a pink Vita? Yes? No? Moron!1!1!!!!!!!

    • Argentil

All in due time. There was a pink PSP after all. I know you’re joking, but when the Vita gets a few more girly games in its library, they’ll release a pink version.

You know what is weird yet funny yet weird. On the main Lazygamer.net page, when you see this very article’s header, it reads “EAD SEX” and a fat hairy guy O_O
