Gears of War judgement will give you sweaty palms

Hyperhidrosis is a a terribly embarrassing affliction; a medical condition which causes a person to sweat excessively and unpredictably. Epic games and Gears of War Judgement developer People Can Fly aim to add a little predictability to sweaty palms, making it so that it’s something that happens when you play their game.

“One of our design principles was the idea of sweaty palms,” Former Epic Viking Rod Fergusson (now with irrational Games) explained to OXM, “when you play you’ve got to have sweaty palms or we’re not doing it right. So far in all of our playtests we’ve all got sweaty palms so that’s good. And it’s about making the Locusts scary again,” Fergusson added. “When you spend eight years with the Locusts it feels a bit like Germans in a WWII game, after a while they just become a known enemy.”

“We wanted to bring back the terror of year one, and that’s what we’re trying to do in Judgement – it’s only a few weeks after E Day, these things are all new to us and we’re really scared of them, what does this all mean?” Fergusson asked, probably rhetorically.

the next Gears of War’s going to be quite a bit more difficult – adding bucketloads of tension.

“So we’ve changed [the Locust’s] power and our health to make them more lethal – one Wretch can take you out so it’s a lot scarier,” Fergusson added.  “It’s that whole idea of feeling more cautious and feeling overwhelmed.”

Are you keen for a new Gears of War? I’m actually growing more and more interested in the game – especially given that it’s got a new developer, in the form of Painkiller and Bulletstorm dev People Can Fly. I think the traditional Gears formula was perhaps beginning to wear a little thin – and a new developer could re-ignite the spark that made Gears of War so compelling in the first place.

Provided they don’t completely fudge it up, that is.
