Gearbox owner thinks all games suck

We will not mention Duke Nukem

Gearbox software is one of my favourite developers, they are the creative talent behind games such as Borderlands and well… okay so they have Borderlands but Borderlands 2 is coming and it’s incredible and Aliens: Colonial Marines is also looking good.

But their newfound success hasn’t got Randy Pitchford suddenly thinking they are the bee’s knees of gaming, actually it’s rather the opposite.

In a recent interview with GameIndustry he goes on to state

Games suck, frankly. Compared to where they could be, all games suck.

But no he hasn’t lost his mind, in fact he just knows that with the right budget and enough time the sky is the limit. Randy is envisaging a time when he can run a billion dollar development team, which isn’t as ludicrous as it sounds seeing that each years Call of Duty rakes in over a billion so it would still be profitable.

Unfortunately though the companies that could even imagine to spend a billion on a development team know full well that a $70 million team and a $200 million marketing budget is more likely to reap rewards than a $270 million development team.

But that doesn’t stop him thinking about the possibilities that could come from such an investment

Think about how crazy these simulations are going to get. And then someday we’ll be living in the Matrix, or the Holodeck, and I’m gonna be writing the software. We’re not even close to what’s possible. We’re in the stone ages, man.

I can’t say the idea of a true life holodeck doesn’t get me excited, imagine the possibilities of interacting with what feels like flesh and blood NPC’s and … get your mind out of the gutter. sies.
