Flamebait Friday Debate: Can EA snatch the shooter crown from Activision this year?

Was playing Call of Duty last night when a massive spider crawled onto the screen. It took a full magazine to kill it.

Much like a game of Trials Evolution, if at first you don’t succeed and find yourself on the wrong end of an explosion, then try, try again. 2012 is shaping up to be another year wherein EA and Activision are tackling the wartime shooter market at roughly the same time, with opposing products.

In the blue corner, you have the EA challenger, Medal of Honour: Warfighter, which seeks to pit special forces teams from around the world against one another in contemporary warfare, while in the red corner, you have Activision with their tried and trusted Call of Duty brand, which sees the return this year of Black Ops.

And then turning that match from a singles competition into a 2-1 fight, EA has brought in some reinforcements with Crysis 3, which follows shortly afterwards in 2013. Make no mistake, Black Ops 2 will predictably sell millions of copies across the platforms, earning Activision Bill Gates levels of cash, and helping cement their role as king of the FPS world.

But can EA perhaps usurp that position with their two-pronged attack, and perform a little bit of regicide in the process?
