First official look at Total War: Warhammer

Total War Warhammer greenskin

The Total War series has had some cool installments and some less cool installments. However, nothing can get gamers excited more than the idea of a Total War Warhammer game, and it’s coming and looks fantastic. Prepare to lose hours of your life to Creative Assembly’s most perfect game collaboration.

Without any ado, here is the announcement cinematic trailer:

And because it’s so important, here’s a non-YouTube link for those who can’t YouTube in your current locations. The blurb on the video doesn’t give too much away:

Gigantic monsters, flying creatures, legendary heroes and storms of magical power take their place on the battlefield, alongside thousands of warriors clashing in real-time tactical battles. All at YOUR command.
In the turn-based campaign game of statecraft & empire building, you will find the Old World an unforgiving and treacherous place, filled with endless war and cunning alliances alike. Whichever race you choose to play as and however you seek conquest, you will be faced with a conflict that threatens to tear the very fabric of reality asunder.

Obviously, fans will want to know the full race list. However, just from the video we can see that there’s green skins, dwarves, vampire lords, and chaos. It even looks like a teaser at the end of Tzeentch, aka the Changer of Ways, who is the Chaos God of Change, Evolution, Intrigue and Sorcery. I get goosebumps just writing that.

No two franchises have ever been more suited to each other. Both are all about building your perfect army and smashing it into some other army. At least now, Warhammer fans won’t have to do math in order to go to war – they can let the computer do that. I just hope Creative Assembly realizes that they will need to offer a ridiculous amount of customization options to players so that they can feel like they’ve hand painted all those models themselves.

This game looks gorgeous already and I’m getting a bit too excited. Particularly exciting? The end of the trailer says it’s coming to PC, Mac and SteamOS “soon”. When is soon? Who knows, but at least it’s far enough in development to say soon and not “2017” or something.

What’s your race of choice in Warhammer? Do you have a wide collection of beautifully painted models, or are far too many still in boxes, waiting for your love and attention?

why test the waters with an unknown though?
the dawn of war series was 40k and that sold buckets.
but regular warhammer titles have never been blockbusters. even on table top, locally atleast, its not even a thing.

Locally, we account for something like 2% of the gaming population though. I don’t think we feature much in any sort of demographic discussions.

Still, your point is valid. However I do think that the Warhammer series is better suited to Total War. If only because the preceding Total War games have been similar in terms of overall feel.

Wasn’t it you that I had this discussion with on the last article? Your reasons were that 40k is far too chaotic to be a Total War game, if I remember? More mechanics than setting?

          • Matthew Holliday

            April 23, 2015 at 10:09

nah, regular warhammer has more mechanics. they got funny extra dice, for funny and abstract rules, more D&D elements.

i think that the 40k attitude would be more suited to the total war game style.

the game trailer said it all “i dont know how to stop this war from happening”
in 40k, the attitude is very much “we’ll stop it with fire and brimstone.”

Total War and Warhammer Fantasy are a perfect fit. The units in both move around in formations. 40K is too loose and different for the TW style. I believe Relic will be looking at 40K again if they stay around. They had good plans until the publisher collapse.

tyranids would be awesome in a total war game.
eldar though, not so certain, they work in the shadows, rarely engaging in full scale battles.
tau on the other hand, would be awesome. walls of blue light being shot at a horde of advancing tyranids is something Id pay money to see.

I’ve never liked the Tau. They were added quite a bit later, and I always just preferred Tyranids. Eldar are awesome though, I think that it would be a wonderful way to keep gameplay fresh by having the different races use different tactics. Keeping you on your toes.

Tau in games are actually the oldest protagonists.
Tau Firewarrior was an FPS game that came out long befor DoW.

Tau are a relatively young race in the warhammer universe, so theyr more aggresive and fighty. massive rail guns on tanks is always a winner.
ive always seen eldar as a bit of a pansy race, their guns are small, armour tight fitted and they hold their guns like girl, preffering to prevent fights than actually stopping them with force.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/row – the first Warhammer 40k pc game I played. And it was awesome, for its time. A game based almost solely on the Eldar. Released in 1999 before the Tau were added to the tabletop game in 2001.

There are other games released before Tau was a thing:

weird, i felt like i played fire warrior waaaaaaaaaay befor, might have only been available locally at a later date then, i got winter assault as soon as it was available here, but that wasnt untill atleast 2005.

meh, its going back a fair few years now, so who knows.

i knew there were other games, but they never really hit my radar.

Fire Warrior was also only released 1 year before DoW, 2003 and 2004 respectively.

I saw this announcement earlier, they’re planning a trilogy of games. Which seems a bit preemptive, because we don’t know how the first one will do. And more worryingly, a ton of DLC. Still, it’s Warhammer!

Also, if fans create a full-on 40k mod, that is 100% isolated from the base game, I’d get it. Apart from that, adding any 40k race into the base game will be dumb, imho.

TW will make a full 40k expansion campaign, probably. But before that fans will add (or change) vanilla races to include anything your heart desires. You don’t have to add those features. It’s fully optional. I plan to be dumb, though. 😀

*Edit: Or possibly just a whole new 40k game a year down the road with the same engine because ALL THE MONEY!

I believe they have confirmed the four factions being Empire, Dwarves, Orcs and Goblins, and Vampire Counts. Chaos will, it seems, be an unplayable NPC faction (at least at launch), and likely the secret hand manipulating things from behind the scenes.

Personally, I love what I see here, and I’m particularly pleased to see Vampire Counts get some screen time, especially at launch.

Edit: Oh, right. Also really happy to see Tzeentch as the big bad. It makes sense considering how Chaos is suggested to be a more subtle and manipulative enemy here. Plus, Khorne gets way too much screen time anyway ;P
