FFD: What’s the most difficult choice you’ve had to make in a game?

No matter which biscuit you take, you'll still get fat.

Many games, especially RPG’s now offer players a choice. Often it’s some sort of binary option, giving you the illusion of choice, freedom and consequence. Sometimes it’s more than that though, sometimes your choices really do matter – especially when they result in the death of a character you’ve become emotionally attached to.

The obvious example, of course, is Mass Effect – and I remember clearly when I had to make a choice between saving Kaiden or Ashley. I paused the game, and deliberated my choice for ages. Kaiden was a good soldier, but Ashley had a nice rack. It really was a gruelling decision. In the end, I sacrificed Ashley because nice boobs as they were, she was irritating as all hell. Plus, I played as Femshep (Jennifer Hale ROCKS), and I’d already fostered a lesbian relationship with a blue alien. That’s just one such choice in the first game – and the entire series is full of such moments, like that blasted loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2.

It’s not the only game series in recent memory that’s made me seriously think about my actions and decisions. The recent X-Com reboot had me questioning every single move; losing one of your most able soldiers to a bit of idiocy is a genuinely heart-wrenching, gut-churning moment. The same goes for Fire emblem: Awakening on the 3DS; losing one of the high levelled offspring of your high levelled couples is the sort of thing that makes you want to cry.

Of course, there was Bioshock, with the decision of whether to harvest the little sisters or save them. You could die, and lose the entire world, or bone Morrigan in Dragon Age Origins. even GTA V had you make an end-game choice. Fallout 3 was littered with game-changing consequences, as was The Witcher 2. It’s especially tough when the choices aren’t clear-cut black-and-white ones, existing in that grey space between.

You tell us though; what decisions in games have caused you to deliberate most? What were the toughest choices you’ve had to make?

It goes without saying that this thread will be chock-full of spoilers.

i had no issue with the GTAV endgame choice, because they gave you a 3rd option to save everyone. I liked all the characters so it was a no-brainer for me.

I loved the mission though. It’s horrifying but after the first playthrough you just sit there for a while and reflect on what you’ve seen, done, or didn’t do. It was one of the only COD moments that still sticks with me.

Funny that your choice in this does not affect anything further on in the game but for some reason it sticks with you.
whether you went with “Why did I shoot? Why do I feel bad? It’s just a game!” or “Why didn’t I shoot? It’s just a game!” The only question that everybody has is “WTF?”

    Goes without saying…

    **spoiler alert**

Would say the one choice that really sticks out in my head was in Mass Effect 3… The mission on Tuchanka where you trying to cure the Genophage. In my 3rd playthrough, I’d decided to not be good or bad – I was going to make the decisions based on what was best for the galactic army I was forming, in order to amass the biggest army I could. On Tuchanka I’d decided to trick the Krogan into thinking the Genophage was cured, thus getting them to join the cause, but also allowing the Salarians to join the cause (because they didn’t want to if the Genophage was cured).

The scene that played out, with Mordin wanting to make the cure legit and me trying to stop him… It honestly hit me hard. When it came to it… I hesitated… I had to pause and think long and hard about it again before I decided to go through with it… And kill Mordin to cover up my trail. Felt pretty damn crap for the rest of the playthrough because of that…

Yeah, I felt bad for a while. It was the only logical choice. I loved the game for this reason. You are a military commander and your job is to win the war. This means that sometimes you have to leave your humanity behind and just hope that you’ll be able to find it again after the war. After this event I moved farther away from “renegade” choices because they tended to be a bit more reckless and I wasn’t about to throw it all away just to be a bad-ass. Good stuff.

Skill tree choices in Diablo 2 always required a lot of thought – if you mess it up at the beginning you’ve got no hope of defeating Diablo at the end. Diablo 3 made that all redundant though.

I tend to pause a bit when I come across a decision I need to make that affects an “innocent” character negatively, & I almost always won’t go that way. There was no way I’d ever be able to harvest the Little Sisters in Bioshock.

The decision that really stands out for me though was choosing to blow my own brains out in Spec Ops The Line.

When I played the X-Files game years ago (the one that came on 8 CDs and starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) I was about 10 minutes from the end of the game, but I had messed up my saves so my only save was after I had forgotten to do one critical thing that made finishing the game impossible. I had to start the entire game from the beginning in order to actually finish it – took me a while to decide to actually replay all those hours just to complete the story…

I have to say it was Mass Effect 1. The choice between Ashley and Kaiden was not an easy one (if you haven’t played it, tough). It’s also because it changes the following 2 games, Wow man, they did a brilliant job with that.

All they needed in the ending was a tiny little speech option with the God child that explains how the Reapers came to be, why they were created and what their aim is.

            The rest was gravy.

But why the fuck that question option was not on the disc is beyond me.

The other just requires verbal explanation (Like the last episode of Star Trek NG)

It should have finished after meeting the God child.

The only options were 1 kill all synthetics including the Geth, 2 sacrifice yourself to take control of the Reapers, 3 sacrifice yourself to have super mega happily ever after ending where there will be no more war or conflict.

I like war and conflict in a game. It wouldn’t be as fun if there wasn’t any fighting.

I quite enjoyed the DLC for the Mass Effect series.

            especially the ME2 dlc.
Kasumi is one of my favorite characters of all time, and lair of the shadow broker especially, is one of the most well written stories in the whole trilogy.

The character from the ME1 dlc gets a comeback in ME3, which is always a nice nod although the DLC itself was pretty mediocre.

and the Citadel DLC from ME3 was just great.
getting to hang with Aria is always a bonus
and the scenery from Leviathan is just gorgeous.
While the stories from the ME3 DLC are mediocre, theres always just something about it that always makes it worth it, its just a feeling that the Mass Effect series has.

Grind through the first mission or two, the games quite old now, so its not as instantly impressive as it used to be.

It grabs you slowly, you dont even notice it, suddenly its 4am, you have work in the morning and are seriously debating whether sleep is worth it.

Dragon Age Origins, the whole Morrigan thing was heavy, certainly. Other parts of that game as well. This is the whole point of age restrictions. I do not believe the average 13 year old understands the tough morale choices to be made.

Fallout 3 also had some interesting choices, choose the lesser of two evils, not just a “good” and a “bad” line. Wish I could remember an example!

Witcher 2, pursuing other ladies. Cheat on kidnapped GF? Yeah…..

the jack romance was pretty touching tbh, but ME3 ruined the feels of relationship.
but then again, so was the tali romance.
            and Liaras.

Even Mirandas was well done, the follow through to ME3 was pretty well done, just a pity she wasnt on the normandy…

I could deal with the ME3 ending controversy, but taking my relationships away from me is unforgivable, the last game was supposed to be the biggest, I wanted my WHOLE team with me.

Interesting enough it also has about 1225 achievements on Steam.

I just saw that, holy crap. 1225 – that’s a LOT of stuff to do…

And since it’s only R75 on steam, I was considering adding it.

            It’s bugged though.
Steam can’t handle that many achievements and the estimated fix time is 1 Valve time unit.

Did you save Tali’s race or Legion’s race? Or were you lucky enough to get that option that let you save them both (I didn’t). That was a shocker.

On the X-Com side: Enemy Within (on classic ironman) is even worse when it comes to agonising over decisions. Early on, it’s easy to grab all the meld canisters on the map. Then the mutons arrive and you end up having to sacrifice plenty of meld in the interests of preserving your team, which means that the tiny bits of meld you DO get to spend are as precious as The One Ring. Do you build an invisible sniper with x-ray vision, or a hulking mech with grenades and flame-throwers? And, should you stuff up and lose one of those amped up soldiers…there is much crying into much beer.

Hardest choice? Finishing CoD:Ghosts because of my completionist OCD or just uninstalling it halfway and end up twitching for the rest of my life.

Now you make me Sadpanda, I switched to Fei Long not Ryu… Spinning Dragon Kick was the SHIT and I always preferred Ken’s range on the Dragon Punch to Ryu’s power. Hadokens have always been for noobs :p

I’ll continue to Hadoken you, until you prove you can avoid them. It’s perfectly viable, and easily avoidable. 😉

I always thought Ryu simply presented the perfect example of a martial artist, humble, yet not someone you should mess with. He won’t start a fight, but he will absolutely finish it. Don’t get me wrong, love Ken also…but we preferred going random, since it was simply unfair to non-obsessive players to continuously pick Ryu or Ken or Blanka etc… Now it’s kinda unfair no matter who I pick lol. Sometimes I just let people pick for me, and laugh when I mop the floor with them while using Dhalsim.

            I also played with Sagat…? :p
I’ll check out KoF13, sounds pretty cool. I always preferred the SF block system to a button press, old school I guess.

KoF13 and SF are pretty much cut from the same cloth with regards to how the specials work, so that will come as no surprise to you, the only real tweak is that KoF has a huge layer of chain moves. Where you start off with a normal kick, or an elbow or something, and then if you know the additional moves afterwards you can just keep pounding on them (blockable…some of them, if you block the first).

The engine is 3d rendered, and then sprites are hand drawn over the models (it’s pretty gorgeous), but it will all have a familiar feel because, as I said, the moves are very similar to street fighter. There’s allot more QCF/HCB (quarter circle forward, half circle back), and moves like that though.

Another game I cannot recommend highly enough, and probably still my favorite fighting game of all time is Capcom vs SNK II: Mark of the Millenium. It’s oldish (2001), but it combines fighters from King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Samurai Showdown, Art of Fighting, The Last Blade, Street Fighter, Rival Schools, and Darksiders (There are allot of characters).
