Evolve is almost dead on PC

Evovle is dying on PC.jpg

Evolve has a distinct and unique approach to online multiplayer, and it’s the reason the title stood out every time I got my hands on it. I think everyone knew that its greatest strength would also be its biggest barrier to entry, but I never expected it to be this bad. Evolve has been fighting an uphill battle on PC especially, and it’s one that’s not being turned around either.

Out of the three platforms that Evolve launched on, it was quickly apparent that PC was a problem. Just a few weeks after launch the game had stumbled down the Steam most played list, barely keeping close to the 40th spot. Just over a month after launch, and that figure has worsened considerably.

Just last night, Evolve reached an all-time low on Steam, barely breaking over 500 players online at once. What’s worse still is that it’s only around half of what the average concurrent number is, with that figure hovering around the 1000-2000 zones at the best of times. At the end of February Evolve was peaking at around 7000 players, and never falling below 3000. Just over this past week, the game has struggled to even break 4000 peak players – nearly a 50% drop in less than three weeks.

The graph of players is just steadily declining, and it doesn’t look like there’s anything in the pipeline at Turtle Rock to try and address it. To be fair, I’m not even sure what can be done to plug the hemorrhaging player base. Those who really love Evolve’s multiplayer have stuck with it, but it just isn’t enough for most without a true competitive scene.

It’s disappointing, because the idea behind Evolve is fantastic when it works like a well oiled machine. But as it stands, you’ll probably find it hard to match with players in a few months time.

There should be a new category for games awards: “Most highly awarded game to completely fail at retail.”

Depends on what ‘fail’ would mean. According to the pubs, they’re pleased with this game’s sales. Guess it didn’t fail.

It failed. Not in earnings, but in value. In consumer retention. The entire object of the game is now moot – how many people will buy the DLC they have planned? How sustainable is this? It’s not. And certainly I will recommend nobody pick the game up now, even if they were interested, purely because the player base doesn’t exist.

yet I have not heard any sales figures whatsoever. Just how many hours were played in the first week. The closest I’ve seen to a sales figure was around seven hundred thousand copies total. also your argument that the publishers are pleased with the sales is completely the. All they cared about was selling units not whether the game did well or retain customers they simply wanted to make a fast buck. That’s why they had all the time sensitive DLC and exclusives that we’re going to expire within 30 days. This game was built to feel before GTA 5 came out. same publisher all they care about was making some money before the PC version of GTA hit the shelves and killed their own game.

We can call it the “OVER-HYPED TO DEATH” category. Past-winners include Titanfall, Halo Reach and many many more.

The game never spoke to me.

I couldn’t understand why everyone lauded it to high heaven. The whole saga reminds me of what happened to Titanfall. The games media frothed at the lips – hyped it for no reason, but ultimately gamers went “meh” (and essentially shunned it at retail). I think at this stage the the big review sites have so little credibility that folks barely even consider them when they purchase games any more.

I certainly don’t. I have a few guys who’s opinions I respect (but I don’t always follow their suggestions), like Geoff, Double Darryn, Zoe and the gang.

It’s starting to become like the Oscars for games. Critics will rant and rave about the game, but the audience will shrug their shoulders and go “It was okay” just to be polite, before heading off to play Call of Duty. Because that’s where they have their fun!

I think I know why – because they played it for a short period of time with people they knew. Every review I’ve read since release says it regularly sucks playing with random people because it needs proper team work & communication, and that after a few hours it gets repetitive.

That’s exactly it, I remember when I reviewed for Lagz, I always made sure that I finished my games (especially story-based games). How can you review something if you’ve only played a few hours of it or barely tried to see the big picture. Take Mass Effect 3 as a perfect example. It all hinged on the ending.

As far as I know Evolve does not include a real story, so yeah you pretty much know what the game is about after a few hours. Also, Mass Effect 3’s story was pretty great and you can’t compare a game like that to Evolve.

        March 18, 2015 at 13:38

The sad thing is this game had serious potential. THe gameplay was awesome and had all the right things to make it epic…. But it was badly implemented and unpolished. Pitty it failed when it had so much potential.

This is only going to give investors, publishers and even devs more of the notion of “When you think out the box you get shot down so why bother” Then they go and copy paste their previous game and give it a new skin and music.

the problem isn’t the games, titanfall is actually fun, but the problem with the game is its pricing model both titanfall and evolve should have been free to play with cosmetic microtransactions.

shooter games built for short play. Nobody is going to sit in front of these games for 16 hours straight at least not after the first couple weeks these are games that play better in short bursts.

They need to convert it over to a new model and fast, maybe free to play with character DLC only or something of the like. Or just get it on a huge special. They need to inject interest and get a player base going again. I wish I could see the console stats. I love this game, so this is sad.

        – Good looking game
        – Fresh ( not necessarily new ) game mode
        – Insane amount of overhype from marketing

Im not surprised to be honest. I held off on buying Evolve and now I’m glad I did.
This game did the same thing Titanfall did. Was big and awesome for the first month, then slowly but surely died out till only a few remained.
As far as I know there is no real story element to the game, just 1-vs-Multiplayer. If they had something along the lines of Left 4 Deads story progression along with the 1-vs-MP I dont think Evolve would have tanked so hard.

Titanfall ended up becoming FANTASTIC though thanks to later updates and upgrades that were free. The interesting thing about Evolve is that the way the characters talk to each other and so on, its as if there is a heavily established story that we catch glimpses of but just havent had it told to us yet, which is strange. Characters talk about their histories, what happened to other planets, who is in charge etc, so its almost like there was supposed to be some sort of movie or campaign running alongside it, unless they just thought it would be cool to sort of fake a deeper history to the game.

I need to just say that to all the people saying they are glad they didn’t buy it, I think its actually sad because this game has been one of the best multiplayer experiences I’ve had in the past years to those people who gave it the time of day. It’s sad to me because I think more people could be having the time of their lives with it, but the way things have played out the game is just sinking. A new approach, maybe some heavy updates, new modes maybe?

It hyped over Evolve for months before release, I followed all the news, watched every video. Then I got into the Alpha and Beta, and after 8 hrs, started thinking…is this it? Its beautiful and the atmosphere is amazing, but its just far to repetitive to stay alive. However, I still thought maybe the extra game modes would salvage these feelings I once had…and then…then they announced their payment model, $15 for a character after I just spend R500 on the game. it was around this time I feel like probably lost about half of their potential buyers. People are finally starting to call bullshit when games charge full price and want to charge for DLC or Subscriptions. Elder Scrolls Online was the first AAA title to fall victim, now Evolve. A new age is coming…developers need to adapt and stop ripping off their customers.

I agree here. Besides becoming a PR nightmare, people just don’t accept that anymore. Although it was $15 for a monster wasnt it? And like $20 for 4 new Hunters or something, that’s still too rough for people on top of a full price game.

I totally agree that’s the 1 reason I stopped playing it, they didn’t include enough content and charged for all the new content, What a rip off… they wanted money for everything, they got carried away, thought they could push that DLC boat out that little to far and they drowned!!!
Us PC owners ain’t no console chumps who put up with all that crap.
Free to play is worse, millions of micro transaction you end up paying more. Just release the game with all the content to start with, stop trying to con us, we know what your up to now and its not going to wash any more. I’m glad I spent under £20 for the game when it 1st come out, I enjoyed the time I had on it, but to be honest with ya I wish I hadn’t of got it.
Maybe when the games released with all the content and a good player base then think about a couple of DLCs with value content for decent price may keep a game alive for even longer.
start thinking of the customers not your pockets and you may get somewhere and have a loyal player base. That’s what Indie games are doing, and im making them very successful , there learning from your mistakes, make be its time you did!!!

I think that’s a fair point you’ve made. I was saying though that it was because of the way the game rolled out, be it that people didn’t buy it because they were convinced there wasn’t enough value, or the people that did buy it just didn’t give it enough effort to learn how to play properly.

This makes me think of games like Street Fighter / MK etc. While some people like me bought Street Fighter IV and then proceeded to get sucked into the depth of the gameplay, the tournament scene, training videos, advanced techniques and ultimately put nearly 2000 hours into the game, most people LOVE SF and MK but they pretty much buy them, play them on a basic level for fun for a week or 3 and then stop playing, sell or maaaybe keep it around for when some friends are over. Sorta the same thing with Evolve, its got heavy depth and the gameplay and hunter classes etc add such a fantastic gameplay experience, but it does require gamers to take that next step, like in a fighting game, which many won’t do.

The whole repetitive one-mode thing I just really don’t buy, I think its a perception thing rather than an actual problem. I’ve played roughly 180 games on the final release version of the game now and not one single game has felt even remotely the same as another. The only thing I would have liked was a random map generator, that would be amazing, although its taken me this long to start feeling like im getting famiiiar with the layout of most maps.

The other thing is at least you can play SF or MK alone online. I put almost 250 hours into Destiny but I’ve stopped playing because my friends stopped playing. We never got round to doing the Crota raid because of scheduling issues or server issues. There has been said many times that the game isn’t fun with randoms so to get the full experience out of this you will need mates who are dedicated to this game.

In the past my responses were just to keep on promoting No DRM and Witcher 3, by saying it a lot. So I’m a pretty easy target. Which lead to a lot of troll shit under my comments. I don’t mind troll shit, just keep it away from my comments. So it takes a different kind of approach and wording, to get through to certain kinds of people.

Well for people like you. The Witcher 3 will have some DRM options. Remember that The Witcher 3 is for all.
Steam DRM version. Steam people loves DRM.
Xbox Live DRM version. Seems like only fat people likes this version because they don’t like to run to retail.
PSN DRM version. Seems the Japanese likes this version because going to retail in that traffic and catching SARS, is a nightmare.

3 DRM versions to choose from. How lucky are you. Oh wait there are also three NON-DRM versions to choose from at retail. How lucky am I. There is also a NON-DRM digital versions. God, how lucky are we as gamers. NON-DRM and DRM working together. We need more of that.

lol. The Witcher 3 will not have any CD keys in the box. Just install and play. You can’t activate the retail PC version on Steam nor GOG. The retail version of The Witcher 3 is a stand-alone edition, not an extension of Steam or GOG.

Evolve was designed around the DLC concept. Evolve’s reason for existence is to sell you DLC. That is why the sum of Evolve’s DLC costs more than the game.

So there are two ways to look at why not much people are not playing Evolve on the PC.
1 – there is just not enough DLC. Evolve is a game meant for selling DLC. No1 playing Evolve means it needs more DLC to sell.

2 – People are not embracing this DLC concept of Evolve. Gave it a try, it’s pretty empty, fuck DLC, not playing this shit anymore.

Number 2 is more likely. Number 2 = taking a shit.

    Don’t Support DLC.

The question is whether or not did players playing it get their value. If they did, then it’s good (doesn’t matter how many people are on it). If Turtle Rock wants to continue to support the PC market, then it’s fine, if not, just put more effort into the Console and offer a consolatory prize for those on PC (giving them free Console codes for the most active).

What about PLAYABILITY, ingenuity, story line ?
Multiplayer games are PESTED with CHILDREN unable to fight their way out of a paper bag, thus the industry bowed to them and created failures like CS, CoD, MineCraft, WoT/A, DoTA, BF(1-Infinity), WoW & derivative MMOs (STO, SWTOR, Guild Wars, Everquest, Jade Empire, etc…). No puzzles, no thinking, run & gun, solve & reward, grind & no rewards.
I would trust no reviews based on statistics from a community of idiots. You want real surveys ? Ask questions, get real in-depth answers.

Backstabbing with a grenade, 100m spawn on top of other players maps, guns that don’t harm you when shot from hips at 10m, killing with riot shields before getting shot, “upgrades” that make you a better shooter, nuke strikes earned by killing people, etc… Ridiculous childish fantasies in otherwise “realistic military” games.
The games have been dumbed down for Kids to enjoy, even if they get killed 1000 times.

I don’t care much about the DLC storm that came from everyone directed towards Evolve, sure DLC is pretty much always overpriced for every game, we had expansion packs back in the day which for couple bucks more as a DLC pack now, gave you about 100 times more, but whatever, DLC is DLC you either buy it or don’t.

What really is killing Evolve is that it is a boring running simulator, and they can’t fix that. The gameplay is super fun when it’s happening, but vast majority of your games you will be running 90% of your time and see 10% of action. It’s just super repetitive due to that – In other FPS games that are mainly multiplayer you are obliterated with action and tension every second, and you need to react fast (Quake, CS, UT, even CoD) but here as said, you are running, running, running, shooting, running, running, running. When the novelty wears of you realize that the game is just not that much fun.

Also it’s pretty hard to strike a perfect balance on such a asymmetric shooter, this is also one reason why people lose interest. Was the reason why Titanfall dropped, people just don’t want to be at a disadvantage, where one strike means the end of you, whilst you are facing a bullet sponge – everyone knows that was the forte of Evolve, but subconsciously you want to be the alpha, not a Frodo.

what can be done is what should have been done in the first place, the game should be free to play with microtransactions for cosmetic items. I feel no pity for 2k or Turtle Rock. the gaming community on PC screamed and shouted at them that this is going to be a disaster and lo and behold disaster, and not just sort of a disaster a spectacular disaster.

Let’s hope this serves as a warning to future gaming companies not to disrespect and price gouge their customers for what is essentially one third of a game being sold at full price.

all props to Techland for not only selling their game, dying light, complete at regular price, providing DLC that was not essential to the game but there in case you wanted more, and also pledging to support the game with new free content, some of which they’ve already provided, after it proved such a runaway success. Turtle Rock has yet to address any of the issues or provide any of the promised DLC as far as I know can’t even be bothered to address PC gamers concerns. They don’t really care because it apparently does OK on the consoles.

Played this for a single weekend and got terribly bored with it. I am not the least bit surprised its shedding players faster than the monster skins appearing as DLC. It’s too repetitive, there is not much to do to be honest and it gets old and boring fast. It’s entire premise is built from the ground up by a single gimmick and that gimmick ain’t lasting enough to keep people invested. Thankfully I got a copy as a gift so I was not too put out but had I dropped $60 dollars on this on the PC I would have been mighty miffed with myself.

The 1 reason I stopped playing it, they didn’t include enough content and charged for all the new content, What a rip off… they wanted money for everything and not just the odd small bit here and there but a lot more, there price of another game even, they got carried away, thought they could push that DLC boat out that little to far and they drowned!!!

Too bad they don’t own the Left 4 Dead rights, Valve owns them after (maybe even before since they provided funding and held publishing rights) buying Turtle Rock back in early 2008 being renamed Valve South. Turtle Rock split away under their original name after shipping the first L4D game, Valve however kept the L4D rights and kept a working relationship with Turtle Rock contracting them to do work on the L4D DLC and on L4D 2. After this work was done they started work on a new IP with Evolve (which 2K ended up owning the rights to after THQ went bankrupt), they very well couldn’t have sat around waiting with the hope that Valve would contract more stuff out to them. So yeah they even if they wanted to make L4D 3 they couldn’t have made unless Valve wanted them to as it’s Valve’s choice of if/when another L4D game is made and who makes it.
