eSports showdown at Montecasino

So, I told you about how The H.I.V.E and Gaming Cartel were coming together for their first major event – a COD and FIFA competition! It happened on Saturday, and I had to pull through to check it out!

Registration started at 10, with the hopes that everyone could start playing at 11.  Yet, when I got there a little after 11, this is what I saw:

Yup, lots and lots of people.  Despite pre-registering all the teams, it still took a while for everyone to get settled and tagged with wrist bands to show whether they were getting pizza or not.

The H.I.V.E. only caters for PC users at the moment, so it was up to Gaming Cartel to bring consoles for this console-based e-sports event.  They had a larger than expected turn-out with 22 teams registering for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and 10 people signing up for Fifa.  So, just shy of 100 people competing at this event – I was pretty impressed.

The vibe was lots of fun – people were probably pretty high on caffeine thanks to the Red Bull ladies.  Here, proof that I was actually there!

But more importantly, look at how cool our local eSports athletes look!

Now, at this point, I’d love to give you more details about the actual eSports aspect of the event – teams that were registered, outcomes of the matches, etc.  Unfortunately, I was unable to stay for the whole day, and team registrations and match tables were not readily available at the event.  Despite my numerous and frequent requests for the results, I have yet to receive them.  However, here is the list of teams that took part:

  • XLNC
  • F34R
  • VIP
  • XtaZ
  • LynX
  • INSANE Gaming
  • INSANE Nation
  • Pure
  • Baylife
  • Speed Gaming
  • Abnormal Gaming
  • Liquid Gaming
  • eVolve eSports
  • S17 Ubiytsy
  • Vitamin Green
  • Vinco
  • Death Before Mercy
  • RaW Gaming
  • PIKITUP
  • SaVaGe
  • Amajimbos
  • Aztec

The prizes were

  • 1st place: R2200
  • 2nd place: R1000
  • 3rd place: 4 x CheapCodes vouchers

I hope to get the results ASAP.  I don’t know why these things take so long to distribute – I just hope that we don’t see more organizational hiccups.  I know this was their first event, and it was really pretty good.  However, we already know that eSports in South Africa are not always the best when it comes to organization and information dissemination; I hope that we see a higher calibre of administration from Gaming Cartel.  At least the guys from The H.I.V.E. seemed on the ball at their venue.  For those of us without high speed internet (thanks for nothing, Telkom!) it could be a nice solution for PC gaming woes.
