Don’t expect DLC for Dark Souls 2

Dark souls you died

I think we can all agree that it’s weird when studios announce DLCs and patches before the game is even released. What ever happened to getting a complete game? Well, Dark Souls II producer Takeshi Miyazoe agrees with gamers and plans on delivering a full experience from day one.

Speaking to Edge Online, Miyazoe explained that the focus has been on bringing the core game to console and PC – that’s right, no bad PC porting this time. Furthermore, he laughed at the idea of monetizing the game like Tekken or Soul Calibuer using free to play:

It’s one of our bigger IPs right now, but it’s a new IP, so I think it’s too young to go free-to-play. And with Dark Souls I think it would be hard to monetise in that way. Pay per death? That would be terrible. From Software especially don’t want to allow players to pay for an advantage.

Man, if that game were pay per death they would have made a fortune! Okay, so if they aren’t going free to play, will they be using DLCs to make extra money? Well, no.

For Dark Souls 2, we don’t even expect any additional downloadable content because we want to deliver a full game, the full experience, to fans who purchase the package from day one. We did do additional content for Dark Souls, but generally downloadable content for Dark Souls II is not really being considered. Buy the package and you’ll get the full experience, and you’ll have as much fun as anybody else. Spending a couple dollars on certain items does not help the experience. So no free-to-play yet!

Wait, a game will be released that’s complete on day one, with no plans for DLCs or pay to win? That’s incredible!

It really is nice to see that guys of From Software keeping high standards for their next Dark Souls game. I’m expecting something really great from them, and I’m totally prepared to die. I hope that the game is a huge success and shows other studios that releasing a great product will lead to financial success – they don’t need to nickel and dime gamers to death.
