Civilization: Beyond Earth coming to Mac and Linux

CIV BE

I know you guys laugh at me for loving my Mac, but I can’t help it. I’m even looking to get a new one at the end of the year – sure I could go PC, but then I’d lose my hipster credibility. But fear not my fellow Mac or Linux users, we can also take over the future world in Civilization: Beyond Earth.

I sat down with Erica Denning from 2K at rAge and I asked her my most burning questions about Civilization: Beyond Earth.

That’s right, even though on Steam the game still only has the Windows icon, the game will actually launch across the personal computer landscape at the same time – coming to Mac and Linux as well.

I was getting worried – all previous Civilization games had come to Mac, and I was getting so sad that this one didn’t appear to be inclusive. Sure, I can play on a PC, but it’s not the same as playing on my Mac. Now I don’t need to fear, and my husband can know his PC gaming time is safe, too.

How excited are you for this game? I can already feel myself getting hooked – that “one more turn” urge is coming and I’m afraid that I will be sacrificing far too many hours to this game. I don’t know how Firaxis gets me so invested in my civilizations, but they really do. I hope the unique mechanics of Civilization: Beyond Earth are even more varied and offer even more replay ability – I believe they will.

If you buy a Mac again, your hipster tag will forever be embedded into you

Does this also cost too much with too few features?

Apple have long ago lost its hipster status, every second person owns an iPhone or iPad. If you want hipster you have to go Nokia or Surface.

I own a nokia 630 and I am NOT hipster by any means. I try, but fail sadly to be cool and “in”

I think a surface is silly. Too pricey and too not usable for me.

This game looks awesome. I would love to know who the 5 people that will be playing this on Linux are?

I think more and more will be joining that camp.

I found Ubuntu 12 and 14 Unity interfaces a hell of a lot easier and intuitive to operate that Windows 8 and Nvidia support is on the same level on Ubuntu and Windows 8.

Still sticking to Windows 7 for my gaming rig.

I just think Linux and gaming couldnt be farther apart. 10 – 15 years ago every magazine article had predicted windows would die and Linux would reign supreme (even on desktop). Today there is an eerie silence from the Linux camp. A few servers run them and embedded devices, but thats it. Whether you like Windows or not u cant deny their sheer dominace over Linux. The threat to Windows in no longer Linux or even Mac, but rather Android.

More than a few servers, really.

The only area where MS didn’t loose out was desktop/laptop. If MS continues on the road of pushing touch screen mobile OS for desktops I think the market can open up for Linux.

Servers is difficult to measure (VM versus physical machine, usage, IP on multiple machines etc etc); ranges from even number between MS OS to 2 to 1 in favor of Linux. If Azure continues get traction in usage and deployment as it has over the last 2 years MS OS will increase its share.

Android runs on the Linux kernel so smartphone market goes to Linux.

Embedded system the majority runs propriety OS or systems; that haven’t change the last 50 years and will not probably not change for the next 500.

I believe true embedded is where there is no OS and you start coding for a micro cpu.

And, because of the price, there are millions of devices like this, where any OS is proprietary and is native and optimised for THAT cpu.

That puts it into perspective. And of course Linux is not an actual company so they dont even make money. The ones who are coining it are Google, Apple and Microsoft,

totally. I see a future where we have this fantastic devices, with a subset of them still using these principles that have become established by Electric and Electronic engineers over the last twenty years

    Ok. Hmm. great.

Will it be fun? Pre-order by my wife (who used her cheque card instead of mine for a change), so looking forward to it, but will run on Windows 8.

When will Mac people learn they are the lesser-unimportant-red-headed-step-childs of the computer world.

Nah, Mac is not hipster. Is a good work tool. Music industry, for example, likes Mac because of the good software written for producing studio quality music

Goodness Zoe, when you ask a question, take a breath and let the other person answer it! 😉

You probably didn’t want to spend the whole interview on this, but I would have loved the answers to such follow-up questions as “What happened that made you hide the Mac & Linux releases from Steam and 2K’s website?” and “Hey, since the PC version was the only one I could see to preorder, I’ve bought that one. Will this be a SteamWorks game like the last ones?”

Hopefully she’ll update this story, but it is wrong. There is no set release date for Mac and Linux versions and they are most certainly not coming this week. http://www.aspyr.com/news_articles/sid-meiers-civilization-beyond-earth-coming-to-mac-and-linux-this-holiday-season
