What happens when we fall down games industry? We get right back up? Stuff you, you’re fired and I just murdered your puppies! The industry today is pretty unforgiving. Make one wrong move, and you’re out the door. But a couple of years ago, experimentation was welcomed. Especially with Sega, before they started to smell worse than the Virtual Boy 3D.
One such product that Sega was working on back in the day, was the Sega Pluto. According to Super Magnetic on the Assembler Games forum, via Destructoid, the Pluto was going to be a Sega Saturn with a Netlink thrown in for good measure. Reminiscing over the untimely demise of an old friend, Super Magnetic spilled the beans on this massive console:
This thing is a beast, and definitely the heaviest console I’ve ever held in my hands. The front features two controller ports, and on top you have a flip-top drive bay, a cart slot, a Power button, and the venerable Reset button.
Note that the logo still says Saturn, so I’m guessing the Pluto codename was simply that, and they were thinking of branding it with the Saturn name. The left and right sides feature beautiful-and-exotic vents, while the back is standard Saturn, save for the Netlink ports.
Sega only made two of these consoles, and half of them belong to Super Magnetic. The best part though? It still works just fine, even to this day.
I’m a huge fan of older consoles. I’ve got my trusty Sega Megadrive, and my Nintendo GameCube still. One of my dreams in life though, is to get my hands on some of this vintage equipment, with a Sega Saturn currently being my most sought after console.
But seeing something that could have been, that bears some relevance to this day? Man, what a treat. They don’t make ‘em like they used to anymore.

I might be going out on a limb here, but I believe multi-player killed and is killing quality games

Wow, that thing reminds me of something that could be the love child between one of those old mini-tape answering machines and a router…
My question… what’s up with all the scatter cushions in the shelves?

Aesthetics? Easy access for all who sit around to play on the console? That’s actually kind of clever. mMmm

Real men don’t sit on cushions, they sit on the floor, and let the cold hard surface tickle their hemorrhoids.

So you go out to buy a shelf to put cushions in that belong on couch?
And he calls ME a n00b.
Plus, decorating is for women, not men.

LOL, never said it made any logical sense, but it is aesthetically pleasing, or so they say.

Those shelves look like they will fit a case of beer each. Now THAT is aesthetically pleasing, PLUS, secondary more awesome function of containing BEER!

It does not compute. Pillows shouldn’t be in shelves. They’ll just make the shelves even more dusty. :0
