Blizzcon 2014 (1)

Last year, I got a chance to hit the BlizzCon scene and snap lots of photos. And it was awesome. It may just be my favourite gaming convention that I’ve ever attended, a two day ride with a great atmosphere, games and even better people attending. I wasn’t there this year, but fortunately frequent commenter Brian Murphy was. And he snapped plenty of pictures for you guys.

Big thanks to Brian for all the pictures and for his time at BlizzCon 2014. It is very much appreciated my man. For the rest of you, if you ever wanted to attend a great event, I recommend saving up. BlizzCon 2015 may not be official yet, but I doubt that it won’t happen. Maybe next year, I’ll be able to return to Anaheim as well.

Cool pics Brian, just one thing… do we add or subtract internet points for black nail polish?

If there’s no eyeliner then we add.

If there is eyeliner, then we multiply any internet points gained at any time by 0.

I saw a couple people with eyeliner doing vape hits during the Metallica show, they were there, but certainly not in the majority.

There were so many different types of people, black nail polish I think was actually in the minority lol.

Heh, even more amusing was the convention blew the power at one point, I guess it affected several locales around the center also. Kind of shitty actually, because you have to imagine there are live raids, arena finals, starcraft finals, pvp finals etc… going on all the time, so that team or person you studied and built a gameplan around and were maybe winning with your strat…yeah, they know about it now lol.

Oh cool, glad you guys liked them. Really had a blast, left on Thursday morning at 6am, got there around noonish, took a bit to get to the hotel, then went straight for our swag bags at the convention center. And basically spent the first day hopping from ‘party’ to ‘party’. Even though the convention center was literally across the street from Disneyland, for every kid you saw with a pair of Disney ears, you saw 30 people with Blizzcon ticket lanyards.

I should probably take some pictures of the swag that came with the tickets and post those too, but yesterday was basically cleanup day, unload all the media from my tablet/phone, do laundry etc… Still have another set of pics coming, so may be more cool stuff mixed in.

Lines were…unholy. No other words can describe. If you plan on going to blizzcon, and you actually want to buy things there, be prepared to not watch…any event. The blizzcon store sold out terrifically fast (my only issue at the entire convention), and I’m not even joking. They sold out of the ‘Blizzcon 2014’ PIN, in half a day…and they knew they’d sold 30,000 tickets. Come on. What the fuck. If you look around online, the WoW 10th Anniversary Canvas bag ($35), is now on Ebay and other places for $160+ (bastards, I hope you choke on your money).

That aside, saw the Method vs Midwinter live raid, that rocked, it was much closer than anyone expected, mainly because Method fell behind in the beginning and then catapulted ahead by ~20% by the 2nd boss. All in all, pretty cool to watch, though Midwinter almost wiped at about ~2% on the last boss…they managed to pull it out though.

The cosplay was pretty amazing, here’s the woman who won it all ($2500 bucks):

Apparently she fell back stage and her costume broke, so she couldn’t actually come out on stage (I hear the ramps for the cosplayers was the culprit…amazing costume though). They were all exceptionally patient though, they couldn’t take 5 steps without having a horde of people asking them to stop and pose for a photo. Some really exceptional effort went into the design of some of these things (There was a mage who had set armor on, and the set actually have moving pieces built into the armor, another guy wearing armor with eyes all over it, yeah, the eyes blinked occasionally).

I literally didn’t run into a rude person there, everyone was so well behaved, lines would split just to let people through (lines extended at times from one side of the convention center to the other…and back…and back again). Blizzcon may not be long for Anaheim, as they may actually be outgrowing it. But yeah, the people were fantastic, so many different types of people playing WoW and other Blizzard games, old, young, male, female, every race you can imagine. And striking up a conversation with someone would lead into some great nerd babble.

There are literally 40-50 hotels w/in walking distance of the center, so ours was about a half mile, with a plethora (a cornucopia, if you will) of any kind of food you’d want, and 2 coffee shops (what I want). So, every morning/night was capped off with something great. I highly recommend Alerto’s (Mexican), if you’re in the Anaheim Area, it was cheap, and awesome. And if you have the cash Morton’s Steakhouse was crazy good (it better be for a $59 Portherhouse…with no sides).

I was there with 8 guildmates this year, and we’re hoping to start a pool and saving for more next year. We ran into a guild that’d shown up earlier in the week to help set things up, and apparently everything had already been finished so Blizz told them to go play games for 4 hours…without any lines (the convention wasn’t even open yet). So…yeah, we’re going to have to try something like that next year.

Here’s more btw, allot of blurry (I don’t have a separate lens for my digital camera, so having to switch in between light and dark constantly was a problem). They’re not all up to my usual standard, but yesterday wasn’t really spent hashing through keepers and tossers, mainly just getting our pics in places guildmates, friends and family could see them:

Is there an article with a summary of what happened at BlizzCon? I feel like Overwatch is the only thing 🙁

They announced Overwatch, they announced the new Starcraft expansion (The protoss campaign), they had the Midwinter (Alliance) vs Method (horde) live raid in the new WoD raids, they had the Starcraft, Arena, 3v3 PvP, and a few other world finals.

For a larger breakdown of the experience (not a play by play of all the sessions, just my personal journey), see the novel below. 😀 And more pictures below that.

        I was hoping for D3 expansion 🙁 Cause I wantz it! 😀

Also REALLY want a new IP with epic story line for a SP experience. I hope Overwatch maybe has something like this. I really miss an epic single player campaign game with rich storyline and then lose myself in it! 🙁

Also WoW seriously needs a graphical overhaul IMO. I know it is elitest graphics whore stuff, but I would really like an interface, login and overall look to just look better! Here’s to hoping! 😀

From what I saw, Overwatch appears to be sorta like Borderlands in the character variety, but fully fleshed out for multiplayer. Not sure how SP will shape up, because the convention was all about MP (and there appeared to be some serious balance issues, but it’s still a ways out yet, so not hugely concerning).

By the way, for those who haven’t noticed it, the cosplayer of the Raven Lord (the bird), is actually in the costume. That guy is just there to help whoever it is, not fall down from exhaustion lol. It was pretty warm in Anaheim. Thought that should be mentioned because unless you look carefully at the bottom, you don’t see their legs (not sure if it was male or fem, which is why I’m using vague terms).
